The Wizard Magic System

'I am not part of the golden trio or quartet. At most I would be an honorary member that would make it the golden trio and a half. Yes, that's it.' Concluded Matthew as he watched Harry, Hermione and Ron leave with Hagrid for his hut for a nice cup of tea after that exciting and dangerous Quidditch match, since they didn't ask him to join them.

They would most likely talk about Snape as their main suspect and what was protected by the three-headed dog that he wanted to steal. Hagrid would most likely explain about Fluffy and 'accidentally' let the name Nicolas Flamel slip. Matthew wasn't sure if it was accidentally, it was most likely planned by Dumbledore the old schemer, whether Hagrid knows it or not. In the end, it would lead the trio to research more and find out about the stone at some point. So the timeline was preserved. The only question is whether they will come to him for help, should he explain about Nicolas Flamel? It wouldn't really matter whether they knew what was protected earlier since the main event only happens once Quirrell moves on to stealing the stone. That was only once he found a way to bypass Fluffy, the Guardian to hell or rather the trapdoor.

It was Saturday and Matthew had still a few hours of the day remaining, he decided to visit the Room of Requirements to get some more training. Or rather it was time for him to take the next step!

~ Scene Break ~

After leaving his friends he arrived in the room and asked for a spell practice room. Once inside he began to analyze what he knew about magic.

There were multiple different Systems of magic that different species used. Like Wizards had their own magic System, so had house-elves or other creatures. Each System was a method that allowed the magic-user to harness and use the power called magic. The Systems should be just a way to allow people to use magic, the final form of Magic, True Magic it could be called, should be free manipulation of reality by using the magical energy of the world. This was something Matthew wanted to accomplish, he never heard of anyone like that in the Wizarding World, but it should be possible based on his analysis of the different Systems.

The Wizarding System of Magic can be split into two kinds of Magic practices, there is passive magic and active magic. Although some of the schools or practices of magic are connected and mixed between the two, passive magic contains Potions, Rituals, Enchantments, Alchemy, and basically everything a wizard uses reagents or needs to prepare for. The Active kind of magic could be called Charms or Spells. It contains a wide range of different magic 'Schools' like transfiguration, charms, defense, Dark arts, and everything a wizard cast with or without his wand.

It didn't matter which 'School' of magic, all of them followed the same principles. A Student learned a spell based on a spell model, incantation, and wand movement previously created based on arithmancy, runes, magical energy, and the laws of the World. This Spell could based on the 'School' it belonged to manipulate reality in a pre-defined way. Yes, the spell application could be based on mastery vary, but in the end, the spell was always the same. A Lumos would always create light, it could be bright or dark, white or any other color, in the end, it was always light. The Mastery of the Spell itself could be split into different levels. The First Level was casting by using a wand movement and an incantation, the next level was reached by removing the Wand movement. This was something all Hogwarts Students learned before their OWLs with a wide collection of different Spells.

After their OWLs, they began to practice the third level of Spell or Magic Mastery, the silent casting. An Acceptable level was reached once the Student could cast a spell by just imagining the incantation and effect. But that level was only mastered once the Wizard could cast the Spell alone with his intent. Mastery of this level was something most wizards would never reach, at most with their favorite spells.

This was the level Matthew currently tried to attain with the spells he knew. He already mastered the second level with most of the Hogwarts Curriculum only a few sixth and seventh years he wasn't able to practice yet. Spells like the protean charm, which was nice to know but didn't add much in a battle situation. But they shouldn't be any trouble with the level of experience he had. Once you mastered a level with a certain amount of spells, it wasn't hard to reach that level with others, it was only a matter of time. His focus in magic trained now was rather on reaching mastery over the third level with his magic. Many of his favorite spells already reached mastery where he could cast the only through his intent. It was even easier with spells you created yourself. For example, his dark piercing charm or his personal stupefy were more complex than a normal stupefy or disarming charm, but he mastered the third level with them first.

But now he came to the core of his analysis, for certain aspects of magic there should be a fourth level. Based on his canon knowledge this was mainly shown during the Duel of Dumbledore and Voldemort in the Ministry. He only found some hints and theoretical knowledge but no actual spells about it in his Database that contained the whole Hogwarts Library. There were according to his current knowledge two particular branches of magic that could reach the fourth level. The fourth level was casting magic without a specific spell but only to will an effect. Once a wizard mastered the third level of a 'school' or branch of magic he could reach a level of understanding where he grasped, that was Matthew's theory, something akin to a law of magic. Where he could manipulate that particular branch only limited by his understanding of that 'law', or whatever you want to call it, and his magical energy reserve.

The first branch where this level definitely could be reached was transfiguration, and both Dumbledore and Voldemort reached that level, which both showed during their duel in the Original work, especially Dumbledore.

Another branch of magic that showed the fourth level was elemental magic. Mastery of the elements was a very powerful branch of magic. It was the prime example of magic in every fictional work, be it books, comics, or video games. Both Dumbledore and Voldemort also used that branch of magic during their duel. Voldemort created and fired a snake made of fire on dumbledore and manipulated it to attack him. While Dumbledore trapped Voldemort in a ball of Water during the Duel.

Elemental Magic was the branch of magic Matthew decided to learn this year. His goal was to reach the fourth level in that branch of magic by the end of the year. He needed to push himself more to his limits. Although he was far more powerful than his year mates and should be even able to beat freshly trained Aurors. He was still decades away from reaching the level of Dumbledore and Voldemort. Even most of the Death Eaters were still a serious threat at the moment. And Voldemort's resurrection was only a bit more than three years away. Although all branches of magic were interesting, his survival was the most important thing for him. And only by becoming stronger, he would be able to survive. He didn't need to kill Voldemort, that was Harry's job according to the prophecy, but he needed the ability to survive. And he could definitely flee with his portals even through portkey and apparition wards, but he needed the ability to fight long enough to create and escape through a portal.
