Chapter 5 Part 5

Baldur POV

I had finally finished my sparring match with Nixie when Athena alerted me to guests at my mother's estate. It now belonged to me, but I could see it as nothing more than her home. With my recent thoughts of indulging myself, I had also decided soon I would venture out to find her and bring her back home.

'I said I would try, but I gave up before even starting. That was unacceptable of me.' I rolled over out of bed and turned my palm over. I cast a quick scrying spell and I was able to see two figures standing at the front door.

They wore long coats that covered their frame, and both wore hats that made them look similar to gangsters. I noticed both also wore a peculiar silver ring bearing an 'M' and some sort of marking covered the band.

My curiosity was piqued, and with a wave of my hand, I was dressed in my Battle Robes. I stepped forward and reached towards the door through my portal. Once the door was open I was able to get a good look at the two in front of me.

Both men looked almost identical at a glance, with one key difference being the dissimilar noses and hair color. The gentleman on my left I knew was older, much older. I could tell this from the way he carried himself as he stood despite his young face.

I turned to him, as he seemed to be the leader of the duo. "Do you need something?"

He gave me a disapproving look and shoved past me into my house. I was instantly on guard, but I decided after the events that took place with Xavier I should probably try to solve things more amicably to save myself some time.

Shortly after moving in, the other followed, giving me a look of disdain that seemed to try and penetrate my very soul. I looked back at him with an unchanging expression and once again turned to the older man.

"I don't have all day, tell me the rea—"

I was cut off by the older gentleman. He threw a dagger and it landed in front of me, embedding itself in the wooden floor. "Silence. You made me and your cousin wait. You could have the decency to shut up and let me speak."

'Cousin? Does this make him my uncle? No. My mother didn't have any siblings. I don't really want to kill my family, but if they continue to act this way...'

"Are you listening, boy?" The older man snapped at me.

My cousin chimed in, "You better listen to your Great Uncle when he talks to you. Just because you live away from the family you think you're something huh? You couldn't even hunt your own Vampire."

"Enough, Donar." My Great Uncle commanded and like a sheep, my cousin complied. He then looked towards me, "Your arrogance and disrespect aside, we are here to officially challenge you. That dumb whore Hilda claimed you to be a better hunter than Donar, and we wanted to see for ourselves."

Although I had not spent much time with Hilda and connected like a true son, I was insulted. He dared to call MY mother a whore. I had a brief flashback to my step-mother having to sell her body which instantly riled me up.

'Calm yourself Baldur, you are the better man. Better in every way.' I calmed myself to think rationally, "I accept this challenge, for Mother's honor. In return, if I win whatever it is you have planned, I get both of those rings." I pointed to what I believed to be their, our family's, signet rings.

My Great Uncle merely nodded as if it was either no big deal, or it was impossible for me to win and started to walk towards me. "I hope you don't disappoint. Wouldn't be fun otherwise."

He waved for my cousin, and they both left. Before they were out of site my Great Uncle said, "Once you get the invitation, make sure you aren't late."

I shook my head, once again my anger flaring and I decided to spy on the duo to get to know exactly who I was up against. I could have simply read their minds but as I learned with the Grand Library, just knowing took the fun out of learning certain things.

I conjured an arcane eye that hovered above the pair and by closing my own eyes I was able to see a bird's eye view of them. The two men continued to walk down the street for a while before they began to talk.

My cousin smacked his lips, "That Balder looked like a pushover. We disrespected his mom and he did nothing. I don't think he really has the balls to go through it, Grandpa."

The older man looked over to Donar and shook his head. "You are still not a great judge of character. He held back his anger to observe us just as I tried to rile him to observe him."

Great Uncle continued after a movement, "And you called him Balder. That is where you are wrong again. He recently changed his name, It is now Baldur Mikaelson."

Donar's eyes grew wide, "You mean like our ancestors? He took their name?"

Nodding to confirm, my great uncle began to fish around his coat and retrieved a pipe. He lit it and smoked for a moment before beginning again. "I believe it to be a sign. He is telling everyone that he is above us, above our need to hide our origins."

I was surprised at the sheer distance this man jumped to reach this conclusion, 'This old man is senile, isn't he.'

I thought my father was ballsy when he named me, but to think my cousin would go a step farther.

"And that is why you must calm yourself and study your opponent, not just hunt. You are a fantastic fighter, but that is not the only part of hunting. Some vampires are clever, some use old and powerful magic, and others are so strong that brawn alone will not fell them."

Surprised at the wise, but otherwise shallow wisdom from my grand uncle I decided that I had heard enough and I would have Athena compile some reports for me to read about the family.

Although I was able to gather a few small details, I was still interested. 'My mother told them what exactly about me? And to think there is such bad blood between them. If I'm going to take this whole new me thing seriously, I'll have to find out sooner or later. I'm tempted to scry my mother, but I respect her privacy. Athena can track her down for me instead.'

Convinced my distractions were gone, I transported myself back to my lab to begin researching this world's dragons, and eventually come up with a method of merging the one from my world and the one from this world.

A/N

Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know that my posting rate is most likely going to slow down. As it is now I spend my one off day writing and the two free hours after work to write. It's honestly draining me. I'm not dropping this, but releases will be slow. I'd be glad if you guys continued to read despite my slow uploads but I understand if you all decide against it.
