5 Chapter 4

It was not less than ten o'clock in the morning when we were about to pass Dona's protection and detection barrier. I stopped the vehicle before passing it to stretch my body to the glove compartment of the car under the attentive gaze of Koda who is a short second left his phone to be attentive. It was quite funny so without him expecting it I kissed his cheek making him blush with embarrassment.

-Mom, not here!

I laughed lightly to return to my seat once I closed the glove compartment again, turning just a little bit to give the black jacket to Isaac who, when he saw it, made a grimace of displeasure.

-Put it on, it will be easier for everyone - I told him calmly making him look me in the eyes, this time I didn't push it away so he could trust me.

-This smells like you want to kidnap me.

-You wish - I answered without thinking about it, smiling at her, I noticed how my face got hot and I quickly looked down at the bag with a frown -. Put it on, now.

-I was amused - he said to me.

When he reached out his hand to take the jacket our fingers brushed and I quickly had to pull my hand away as I felt a draft go all the way down my back scaring me a little. I looked back at him and from the look on his face, I knew he noticed it too. He pulled his jacket over the top of his head and covered everything with it. I let out a sigh to get back behind the wheel so I could get my heart and nerves under control.

When I did I started the car back up past the barrier and immediately a message came on my phone. I knew it was Dona so I didn't need to check it.

The herd lived in the middle of the Banff National Park and the Sawback Range, between the forest so they were not detected by humans and hidden by other beings; besides being a place with a lot of vegetation they had maximum protection of territory that thanks to the state were granted and it was a small population, as a small town of 70 inhabitants. Although some of us, including Koda and myself, lived in the surrounding villages. For example, the head of protection at the museum is one of the herd, including the headmistress of his school who knew about the small situation we were in at the moment. We had thought about going to the pack at Christmas but with the current events, it would be a bit complicated.

I drove until I reached a dirt road which I entered. Koda kept humming the song that the radio was playing until little by little it became distorted until he could no longer hear it. I turned it off and turned my head slightly to look at him which was attentive to the road, luckily there were not many potholes and in the rearview mirror, I could see that there would be no problems with Isaac and that was a relief.

The road was getting more complicated because of the potholes and the trees were more abundant giving it a darker aspect. In no time we arrived at the part where it said private property and luckily the gate was open.

It took not much more than two minutes to arrive and a large number of trees was cleared by a path lined with log cabins. I continued driving to the main house leaving the car at the side of the house. It didn't take long for Koda to take off his seatbelt and get out of the car with a loud slamming of the door. I sighed as I turned off the car and turned around to look at Isaac. I brought my hand to his knee and gave him a tap and he reacted by quickly taking off his jacket. He looked at the place a little puzzled until he looked at me.

-It smells a lot like mongrels...

-Respect vampire. Get out - I told him a little annoyed getting out of the vehicle.

I went to the back door to get my backpacks and coat; standing next to Isaac he and I walked until we turned to the corner of the house revealing Dona with her typical scarf protecting her neck. She had two big long braids on each side of her body, a redshirt that went down to her thighs, and beige pants with leather boots that went up to her calves. She was small and slim but strong, stronger than I would say.

She was holding Koda who was talking to her with a smile on his face. It didn't take long for Nolan to appear through the door wearing a T-shirt revealing his strong bare arms and half torn jeans, and his head was shaved on the sides. He was also greeting Koda with the enthusiasm which he was quick to pass in his uncle's arms.

Dona and I connected a glance so I smiled at her and she did the same with affection. She quickly walked down the steps until she reached me so she could hug me tightly and then she pulled away, grabbing my cheeks.

-But what a face you bring me, little girl.

-It's nothing - I said, taking her hands away from my face and then looking at Isaac. I guess I shouldn't introduce myself.

-No need - Dona said looking at Isaac -. Long time no see Evenson, you haven't changed at all.

-I would say the same, but you have aged Dona Whites - I noticed that he looked in the direction where Nolan was with Koda, this first one had a serious face so I looked again to Isaac -. Even your oldest son got old, where is the little one? - I looked at her with a certain mockery.

Dona smiled back but what I felt when she mentioned her youngest son was dizziness in my stomach making me remember that moment. I bit my lip with some force opening my lip again which caused me to call the attention of Isaac who completely changed his face of mockery.

-He died - I murmured to move away from them and up the stairs quickly passing Nolan.
