13 Overwhelmed

She came and sat on her heels in between my legs, her knees touching the floor as she held my hands. I opened my eyes and saw how beautiful she was. I remembered five months a when I took her in my arms, on my bed and made love to her. It was the first and only time, the sound of her cry and struggles made me love her even more. When I discovered she was a virgin. I knew I could not deny her anything, even a part of my soul.

Now the sight of seeing her kneeling and her hair loosened made me want to take her up in my arms and bury myself deep. She was spectacular but difficult to appreciate under the circumstance; I was mad at her.

"Baby," her voice implored, "I am so sorry for making you feel the way you are feeling. I was heavily worried. You came to Abuja and left coldly."

I did not respond but only gazed into space.

"I guess I was being selfish and I am sorry." Her voice trailed off. I reflected on what she said, I was the one being selfish here. I went to Abuja with a diamond ring Worth N180, 000, because I thought no gift was too expensive for the woman I love. But I changed my mind when I got a whiff of her wealth.

"Who did you call at the head office," I asked accusingly.

"I called the MD. I am sorry darling, I am."

"Who is he to you?" This came to her with the force of a harpoon, but she held her temper.

"Let me explain it this way". She sighed, "I manage my father's businesses: an oil servicing company, a hundred and five unit housing estate and a five-star hotel in Abuja. I also have hotels in Lagos." Then in humility, she liked her answer to the question.

"I have over N750 Million in your bank which I have not accessed in over six months. The bank does what I say and I don't say much."

I was transfixed, I couldn't open my mouth. Why didn't she tell me this all these while? I would have left her a long time ago.

"Are you planning to leave me?" She asked perceptively reading my thought.

"I don't know, I want to sleep," I got up, but she held me down.

"You promised you will always be there for me." She reminded me "I need you now as ever. You know you are the only one I have in this world, the only one who wants just...me." Her voice trailed into a sob. I saw tears roll down her cheeks; she was still kneeling and looking up at me.

"Please." She added finally. I made to go but she pulled my hands gently again, "Please hun."
