9 He Was A Good Person

The more Vera got to know Casey, the more questions she had. He really didn't say much unless he was directly responding to something she said. 

She figured that was partly because of his issues talking and partly because something bad had happened that he didn't want to talk about. But she didn't realize how bad things were at first. 

There were hints. Like the day he was soaked in the rain and borrowed some of her dad's old clothes. The sleeves were too long for him so he had to roll them up and she saw what looked like scars peeking out from underneath as he did, though they were covered again once he figured out the right way to roll them so he could use his hands.
