1 Chapter 1

"Shouldn't you be getting home, darling?", said the elderly Mrs Smith in her yet so eloquent British accent. Amber, who was arranging books into shelves in order of genre, looked at the brown wall clock. '8:54', it read.

"I suppose", she said dully.

"Anything wrong, darling?"

"Nothing for you to worry about, ma'am. I best be going home...I promise to come as early as 7 O'clock tomorrow", Amber said picking up her black backpack that was on her chair.

"No need to worry dear, you already worked so hard today. You can come in at 8, if that's fine."

"It is, thank you Mrs Smith.", Amber looked at the grey woman. Even at this age, her beauty was still ever green.

"Good bye Amber", Mrs Smith waved.

"Good bye ma'am.", Amber said and walked out the door.

New York City had never been a place for peace and quiet. Amber looked at her watch. 'Even at 9, this place is as busy as ever'. Trying to ignore the noises she walked down her street and came upon her house. The lights were on, 'Aunt Kathy and Uncle Eugene must still be up', she thought. She felt a lump in her throat as her cold hand reached for the door knob. She was scared.

"Look who finally came home", Eugene said. He was a fat, bearded, average - heighted middle aged man. His shirt was too small and it exposed a bit of his pot belly. He sat in his recliner sipping a bottle of Fanta™. The TV was on. Eugene was watching wrestling....again.

On hearing the door open. Kathy walked briskly from the top of the stairs to the bottom. She saw her slender, blue - eye, blonde niece placing her backpack on the sofa. She stared at her nice with disgust. Always.... She had always been jealous of Amber's beauty and elegance. She tried everything from skin care products to special herbal creams; but nothing could give her the natural beauty she so hungered for.

"I'm sorry, Uncle...I was at the library...I lost track of time."

"That's not by problem. I got no business with your life no more", he pointed at a big brown suitcase at the end of the living room.

"We've packed your bags. You're leaving"

Amber felt her heart pounding hard, threatening to burst out of her chest. 'Leaving, and for what?'.

"But.... I didn't.... I was just late... I didn't do...anything",she said, he eyes brimming with tears.

As those words escaped her lips, she wished they didn't because her reward was a hot slap from her aunt. She looked at her aunt who was raging.

"Never talk back at your uncle!"

She started sobbing. And that earned her another slap, but this time from her uncle. He slapped her so hard, she fell to the ground, caressing her cheek.

"Why the hell are you crying?", he said, anger written all over his face. He carried her backpack in one hand and opened the door with another. Before she could protest, her bag was on the lawn outside. He walked to the other side of the room and did to her suitcase what he did to her bag. Amber stood up and turned to her belongings. As she was staring, her aunt pushed her out of the house onto the lawn.

"Don't ever come back, you hear me, you mistake.", her aunt said bitterly.

"If you do, we'll kill you. I swear on it", Eugene said and slammed the door shut...

In a few seconds, the lights were out.

Tears pouring down her cheeks. She stood up and took her bag and suitcase. 'Why would they do that? I didn't...'. She started weeping terribly.

'Oh God help me. Only you can' 'Where should I go', she thought.

"Elder Hugh! Elder Hugh! Where are you?! ", Caleb shouted. An elderly man emerged from the living room holding an old Bible in his hand. He looked frail, but quite happy.

"I do apologize. I was observing my prayers", the English man said.

"Look, I don't care whatever 'god' you serve or what you do to it. Just don't let it interfere with me", Caleb responded. He sighed.

"Anyway, I'm going out for an evening drive", Caleb said twirling the keys around his fingers.

"And you are taking the....", Hugh said waiting for a response.

"Benz"

"Hmm.",

"Why the 'hmm'?", Caleb questioned.

"Nothing. You look different."

"Different?"

"Yes.. It's in your eyes. Is something bothering you?"

"Nothing. Just been thinking a lot lately.", Caleb said as his mind wondered to a distant land far away from reality."

"Well..", Hugh said, snapping Caleb back into the real world.

"Do enjoy your outing."

"Thanks", Caleb said. He opened the door and walked out. Driving made him relax and think better. Thinking.... That's what he needed.

'Oh, Dear Lord, please touch his heart', the butler prayed.....
