45 Betrayal

Although his promotion didn't provide a significant boost to his combat power, Alexander felt better about participating in Tingen's events.

Even if he hadn't made a deal with the True Creator, he would still like to affect Klein before the Evernight Goddess and Adam notice him.

As for feeling bad for helping the True Creator descend?

From his understanding, the only reason that the True Creator wanted to descend was to sabotage Adam's plans, rather than create chaos and slaughter innocent civilians.

Moreover, Alexander only agreed to assist him, the deal stated nothing about his actions after assisting the True Creator.

In fact, if he wanted, Alexander could let the True Creator descend and simply backstab him the moment he arrived.

Of course, if he did that, he didn't believe that the True Creator was noble enough to keep his promise and give him the Grade 0 Sealed Artifact.

Just as he was going over his future plans, he heard someone knocking on his door.

While wondering why he was suddenly so seeked after, he opened it, only to see Natalie at his doorstep.

Before Alexander could ask her what's up, Natalie had already spoken up.

"There has been an emergency, hold my hand.", she said and stretched her left hand.

Alexander did as he was told to, but the moment he touched her, the familiar feeling of teleportation passed through his body.

Looking around, he found that they had been teleported to the apartment that their MI9 team used.

He was surprised to see that various parts of the apartment had obviously blood stains on them, as if someone had died in here.

Understanding that something important had happened, Alexander's expression turned serious as he looked at Natalie, waiting for her explanation.

Natalie walked to a random chair and sat down, before speaking up.

"We tracked down the culprit of yesterday's assassination attempt and managed to find their hideout."

"It was an abandonded church, making us believe that he was a wild Beyonder."

"After we stormed inside, we learnt that not only were they not a wild Beyonder, but their organization had already been expecting us to come."

"Unfortunately, Kayne died in the ambush, while the Team Leader got injured.", she explained.

"That bastard, Samuel, had been a double spy all along.", as Natalie said those words, she couldn't help but smash on the table with her right fist.

Hearing her words, Alexander was surprised.

He wasn't surprised by the results of the operation, as his intuition had already warned him of the danger inside the church.

What truly surprised him was that Natalie didn't seem to care about her teammates, talking casually about their death.

From her words, Alexander could see that she didn't care about being betrayed, but by the fact that she was in danger.

'Are all Sequence 7 Beyonders so realistic nowadays?', Alexander wondered.

Seeing the doubts on his face, Natalie understood what he was thinking.

"Just like you, I haven't been part of this team for too long."

"Moreover, death is somewhat expected in our kind of work."

"My last team also died on a mission."

"You'll get used to it.", Natalie said and patted him on the shoulder.

"Anyway, the reason I brought you here is simple."

"From my experience, the headquarters are either going to assign two new members to our team, or they are going to completely disband it."

"It depends on Team Leader's condition."

Reading between the lines, Alexander understood what she was implying.

Whether the team disbanded or not, depended entirely on if Ralph could continue to work as a Beyonder.

This meant that the future of the remaining members like Alexander and Natalie was uncertain, as they couldn't guess where the headquarters were going to re-assign them.

Alexander remembered some of the events that had previously happened in the simulations he had conducted.

Was his time to work as a double agent for both the Loen Kingdom and the Intis Republic finally coming?

Countless thoughts ran through his mind, but Alexander quickly returned to reality.

"Wait a moment, how did you escape the church as an Interrogator?", Alexander asked Natalie, ready to distort her to death if her answer didn't satisfy him.

"Haha, I have an extraordinary item that allows me to teleport."

"It's also how I teleported you here.", Natalie explained and pointed at the swan brooch on her chest.

Although it seemed to make sense, Alexander felt that she chose to teleport him just to be able to use this exact excuse.

Nonetheless, he didn't bother to ask about her secret, as long as it didn't put him to danger.

It couldn't possibly be that the soul of a Great Old One was living inside her swan brooch, right?

Right?
