Chapter 083

"Good morning Baron Bramis" greeted Alvin with the standard noble etiquette.

"And good morning to you too, young Baron Hans" Bramis returned the greeting.

"I am not actually a Baron. I never managed to inherit my title before I was forced to flee" said Alvin.

"I actually noticed you sneakily looking at us, right after Peter suddenly started displaying signs of shock and disbelief. After that, Peter asked for my leave in a hurry, and was in a rush to get back to Backlund. Then, I find you hiding under my carriage. It's easy to put two and two together. There is some story to the decline of the Hans family, and Peter works for someone involved with that incident. You have some method to detect his hostility, but could only narrow it down to a general direction. Hence, you ambushed under the carriage. Is that right?" asked Bramis leisurely.

Alvin remained silent.

"Patient, cunning, good physical strength, and ambushing a location ahead of time after guessing my next move. You must be a Sequence 9 Hunter" he continued

Alvin was impressed, but he knew he needed to answer him. They were obviously going to agree to some terms, and he had to prevent himself from losing the initiative.

"Calm, collected, outstanding powers of observation, and the ability calm an aggressor down and carry a conversation with him. You must be a Sequence 8 Telepathist" said Alvin.

"I must admit, I am impressed. Not many wild Beyonders can name the Telepathist potion, let alone know its characteristics" said Bramis.

"And what makes you think I am a wild Beyonder?" asked Alvin.

"Well, the clear lack of backup, no organisation attempting to question the decline of the Hans family, either one of those is ample indication" said Bramis.

"Do you belong to the Psychology Alchemists?" asked Alvin abruptly.

"Well, it's not a simple question to answer. But if you report me to the official Beyonders, they will eventually arrive at the answer no" said Bramis.

"Well, this has been fun, but I am not as keen as you on mind games. How about we get straight to the point?" asked Bramis.

"Sure" said Alvin looking at the butler at the side.

"Don't worry. He is a trusted subordinate of mine" said Bramis.

"Can you tell me about Peter and whoever is backing him? I will deliver sufficient remuneration for information" said Alvin.

"Well, Peter joined my service a year ago. I came into possession of some important objects from a highly confidential source. I believe Peter came to on the behest of someone to enquire of the matter. I did not probe into him to his backer, as they are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. I don't know anything else" said Bramis.

"Thank you. Is there something I can do for you?" asked Alvin.

"Not really. I was thinking of some plans to get rid of him without exposing my strength to his backer, but it's even better if a third party like you gets rid of him. Please do tell me who sent him afterwards. You can easily reach me at the Bramis Manor at the edge of the Empress Borough" said Bramis.

Alvin thanked him, and got off the carriage. He then ran in the directions of the train tracks. But as soon as he was a large distance away, he stealthily crept back, and used the Ear of the Crazed to truly and listen to what was being talked about.

The two stayed silent for a few minutes. Just as Alvin was thinking about putting the Ear of the Crazed away, he heard an interesting exchange.

"He should be gone by now" sounded the voice of Bramis.

"Sir? I thought the reason you kept that Peter by your side is because you had something planned for him?" sounded the voice of the butler.

"Indeed. I wanted to give that Viscount Redfellow a devastating blow after I exposed that his illegitimate son was working in some shady business, and get him angry at Baron Rudolf for his use of his son. But plans can't keep up with the changes. The Hans family's descendant is like an animal seeking blood. It won't stop for the sake of others' convenience. He will definitely target Peter and ferret out Rudolf. Rudolf will probably give up my side and make Peter hide out in the seas, just like those few who used to do dirty work for him before. A lot of preparation was necessary to make the trap effective. But now, with the chance of things falling apart at any given moment, it is better to not even bother with it, so as to not expose any flaws" said Baron Bramis.

"Will the operation next week continue? If yes, should I get someone else to take charge of it? Or will Peter still be okay?" asked the Butler.

"For now, don't change anything. Let us hope that Hans kid does not attack Peter before next week, or that Peter would be smart enough to find the clues we have planted. If both fail, we will have to use the backup method to transmit the information. But it's riskier, and may alert the churches" said Baron Bramis.

Alvin was interested in listening further, but the safe time of the Ear of Crazed was up, so he reluctantly put it away.

He then ran some distance away, and pulled out a small doorknob from his pocket.

This was one of the few items he inherited from Frederick Brown's connection. It was called the Door to a Familiar Place.

This mystical item could transport him to any place that was familiar to him. The familiarity was important, as you could be randomly thrown somewhere if you tried to teleport to an unfamiliar place. The larger the distance, the more spirituality would be consumed.

Alvin had thoroughly familiarised himself with all his safehouses, as he had planted nasty traps in many of them. Thus, he could teleport to his safehouses freely if he so required.

Alvin used this to teleport to a safe house on the edge of Backlund. There, he quickly changed into his leather hunting clothes, armed himself with a few prepared weapons, wore the tight-fitting skin mask and donned the face of Alvin Jonas, and went to the train station.
