19 Jane's Help

In the afternoon, Detective Isengard felt very satisfied with the progress of Ebner's study of the ancient Feysac language and handed him another copy of the ancient Hermes text.

"Ancient Hermes originates from nature. It's similar to the Ancient Dragon Language and Ancient Elvish Language. The effects are very direct. It's a language that truly possesses' power '! However, it lacks the necessary concealment and protection, making it easy for the user to fall into danger. You have to pay attention to this when learning it. If it's not necessary, don't read it out loud," Detective Isengard exhorted as he handed the information to Ebner.

Ebner also knew the severity of the matter. He nodded solemnly, and with the aid of the pure white eye, he devoted himself earnestly and cautiously to his studies.

Just like that, a few days passed quietly.

Over the past few days, Ebner had been living a peaceful life. Through learning languages, reading and understanding during rituals, he quickly grasped all kinds of knowledge and digested the remnant psyche in the potion. He even felt that he would completely digest the Reader in another week or so!

Time quickly passed until Wednesday morning. After eating breakfast, Ebner and Xio once again arrived at the abandoned manor in the northern suburbs.

After shooting all the practice bullets they had brought with them, they fought again. This time, Ebner held on for a full minute before he lost.

Xio was very surprised by this. It had to be known that the speed at which she digested the potion in the past few days wasn't slow either. Her combat abilities were much stronger than the last time they fought, which was enough to show how astonishing Ebner's improvement was.

"Your physique hasn't improved much, but many of your techniques seem to be on the verge of mastering them, forming your body's instincts! According to what I know, many knights have fought on the battlefield for more than ten years to reach this stage… Perhaps you really are a combat genius. Unfortunately, you didn't choose the potion of the Warrior Sequence," Xio said with some regret. Although she didn't know which pathway Ebner was a Beyonder, it wasn't a direct battle.

Ebner did not feel that it was a pity. Perhaps this combat talent was also a gift from the pure White Eye, but its support in other areas was obviously stronger. It would be a waste to choose a warrior.

"By the way, with your physique, you are more suitable for weapons like a knight's sword. I don't know much about those, and I only know a little about the basics. What I'm best at is a dagger or a triangular blade." Xio was only 1.5 meters tall. Many knight swords were taller than her, so she was naturally not used to using such weapons.

"It's fine as long as I know some basics. I don't expect myself to become a Sword Sage. Besides, as long as I advance to Sequence 7, I'll naturally become a weapons master." Ebner was in a good mood and wasn't disappointed. He then asked Xio about her plan of coming into contact with nobles.

"Has Fors's new book been published? Is she still finding all sorts of reasons to delay the publication?"

Xio rubbed her forehead and replied helplessly, "Not yet, but under my urging, she has already finished writing it. It will be published on Saturday at the earliest."

"It's been hard on you. I think her editor should treat you to a meal!" Ebner joked.

"Actually, Madam Aina has already invited him…" Xio sighed.

Just as the two of them were chatting and laughing, three carriages suddenly approached from afar. The sound of the horses' hooves shaking the ground made Xio and Ebner immediately alert. They hurriedly packed up the things they had brought over, then passed through the side door of the manor and entered a small utility room in the activity room to temporarily hide. This was an emergency plan that had been planned beforehand.

Of course, it was fortunate that the two of them were cautious and collected the shells after practicing shooting. Otherwise, they would have exposed themselves.

However, what they did not know was that after they hid in the utility room, a gust of cold wind suddenly blew across the shooting range. After the cold wind passed, all traces of activity were wiped away. The people walking down from the carriage did not notice at all.

"Perhaps someone wants to buy this manor…" Xio whispered into Ebner's ear after carefully discerning the conversation between the people.

Ebner nodded. This was not good news for him. If someone really bought this place, he would not be able to come to the shooting range for free.

"Actually, it's not a big problem. Most wealthy people buy villas in the suburbs for vacation or hunting. They don't come here more than a few times a year. As long as they can hide it from the people guarding the house, they can still get their hands on it." Xio clearly guessed Ebner's thoughts as she consoled him.

That's not as convenient as it is now. I still have to sneak around and be on tenterhooks… Fortunately, my shooting skills have improved tremendously!

While Ebner was deep in thought, the group outside, after looking at the other rooms, came together into the living room.

"Mr. Caron, what do you think of this place? Although it looks dilapidated, as long as it's renovated, it won't lose out to the Elk Manor on the west side. Also, it's closer to the North Borough, so it's more convenient for transportation. It's definitely worth 2,500 pounds to buy it!" a magnetic male voice said in an exaggerated tone, completely ruining his good voice.

Xio pursed her lips when she heard this. She whispered indignantly, "Back when Father bought it, he spent 4,200 pounds…"

Ebner sighed silently, thinking that if he had money in the future, he might be able to buy it back for Xio. But on second thought, he decided to forget about it. It was more of a sense of accomplishment and ritual for her to do such things herself. What was the point of me doing it on her behalf?

"Mr. Cecil, as you said, this place is just too dilapidated. Not only do I have to renovate it, but I also have to purchase new furniture and decorations! In addition, I heard that this place is always haunted? So, how about a transaction of 1,000 pounds?" Mr. Caron bargained after pointing out a series of problems.

"1,000 pounds is too little! It's at least 2,200 pounds! Mr. Cuarón, what haunted house is just a rumor. Don't you think I'm fine?"

"But why did I hear that you really feel seriously ill previously?"

Just like that, they continued to argue and finally lowered the price to 1,800 pounds. Mr. Cecil was no longer willing to give in, so Mr. Cuarón reluctantly agreed to the deal.

While the lawyer was making the contract, a man named Carlon walked to the door of the utility room.

Ebner and Xio immediately tensed up. The former thought for a moment and took out an iron mask from his pocket to wear. This was originally used for participating in Beyonder gatherings at night.

Xio was even more straightforward. She grabbed a handful of soil and wiped her face clean.

The two of them had the same thoughts. Once they were discovered, they would immediately cover their faces and rush out. As long as they were not caught on the spot, everything would be fine.

However, what was strange was that Mr. Cuarón walked back and forth outside the utility room several times. In the end, he did not push open the door and enter. Instead, he muttered to himself in puzzlement, "Why do I feel that something is missing here?"

Through the door, Ebner and Xio, who had clearly heard this, looked at each other in surprise. They both saw two words in each other's eyes. "Something's wrong!"

This was much scarier than Mr. Caron opening the door directly! This meant that there was supernatural power in this house that they did not know about! And the unknown was the scariest…

After the guards left, Ebner and Xio didn't dare delay any longer. They wanted to leave the abandoned manor as quickly as possible.

Just as Ebner was about to step out of the door, his spirituality suddenly stirred as he subconsciously turned his head. Then, he saw a line of text written by Hermes condensed on the window glass. "Don't be afraid. Kaspars mentioned you to me."

The words rippled like water and disappeared in the blink of an eye. If Ebner's memory and observation skills weren't so extraordinary, he would have thought he was seeing things.

Kaspars? Since when did he know such a high-end person? That's not right. He did know such a person from the Rose School of Thought's temperance faction, Miss Sharron… They got to know each other so early?

That was what he thought, but Ebner didn't stop walking. He couldn't just believe whatever that person said. It was best if he went to find Kaspars to confirm if it was true.

"It just so happens that there's a Beyonder gathering hosted by my teacher behind the Bravehearts Bar today. I'll just ask him on the way."

While Ebner was thinking this, he and Xio had already run to the boundary a mile away from the manor.

Xio slowed down and asked with lingering fear, "What's that? I didn't even sense anything!" She didn't see the words on the glass, but her intuition told her that there was something terrifying in the activity room.

"It might be a Wraith…" Ebner wasn't sure either. All he could say was that it was very likely.

"Wraith? Is that the name of a particular Sequence?" Xio now had some blind trust in Ebner, believing that he knew everything.

"It's Sequence 5 of the Mutant pathway."

"Sequence 5…" Xio swallowed her saliva with great difficulty when she heard that. She was so afraid that she didn't dare say another word. A powerhouse like that could crush two Sequence 9s as easily as killing two ants.

After the two of them returned to the city in silence, Xio continued to be an Arbiter in East Borough, bringing justice to the lower-class citizens. As for Ebner, he returned to Detective Isengard's house, planning to study hard for the entire afternoon to ease the depression he felt because of his weakness.

The experience from before had once again given him a deep feeling of not being able to control his own life and death. Even if that vengeful spirit did not have any ill intentions, he still did not like that feeling. It was a weak feeling that he could not even resist.

But as soon as he pushed open the door to his teacher's house, Ebner saw Jane sitting uneasily in the living room.

Detective Isengard saw him enter and said with a smile, "You're back. This Miss Grant has been waiting for you for an hour."

Ebner greeted the teacher first, then turned to Jane. "Why are you here, Jane?" he asked suspiciously.

Jane got up and walked quickly to Ebner. She said shyly, "I… I need your help!"

This girl had always been insensitive. In his memory, he had never seen her acting so bashful… To be honest, even Ebner felt a little scared.

He saw Jane peek at Detective Isengard before quickly turning her head. He immediately understood her concerns, so after apologizing to his teacher, he brought her to his room.

As expected, as soon as they entered the house, Jane grabbed Ebner impatiently and said anxiously, "Ebner, I want to ask you to help me investigate my father!"

"Investigate Mr. Grant? What happened to him?" Ebner frowned at that.

"He's been sneaking out at night these past few days. I suspect that he has a lover… I don't dare to tell Mom about this, so I can only ask you to help me investigate."
