“Did you love her?”

“Did I…”

“Love her?” Anika suddenly snorted and slapped a hand across her mouth.

“Something funny?”

“I was about to ask if you thought she was The One. Luckily I stopped myself.” She hiccupped. “Pardon! I’ve had far too much. Please take this away and don’t ever bring wine again.” She handed me the half-empty bottle but clung to her glass. “God, I’m still thinking it…did you? Was she The One?”
