11 Chapter 11

It was a shame. Although grateful for anysocial interaction, I was tired of always talking about work and longed for a confidant to share laughter and gossip. I wanted the kind of relationship Anika had with David.

There were over fifty staff members at Saint Joseph’s and not one had become a close friend. Actually, I’d yet to meet the majority of them. The staff room was usually deserted apart from hurried coffee runs or mad dashes to retrieve sandwiches from the fridge. I occasionally exchanged greetings with a familiar face but no one stopped to talk. Eventually, I gave up going; I worked at my desk while eating lunch. Like everyone else.

Anika’s get-togethers were my entire social life, my only escape from evenings alone in my flat with the noisy neighbors and never-ending rumble of traffic. I’d intended to join a gym or take walks and explore the city. But, tired after work, I lacked both energy and enthusiasm. Life wasn’t ideal—but then, I’d never expected it to be.
