1 Chapter 01 - Delivery

It was a clear day.

The sun was out and it was very hot, it was probably around noon.

It was hot enough for the radiation and reflection of heat to be visible on a dirt road that was there and extended to the top of a hill that was there.

On this hill we could see that it didn't have many trees, it was practically deserted in that sense, except for the grass.

There was a vast green field above it, so in that sense, it was very much alive, but there were no animals visible in that area close to it.

It could be due to the lack of trees, places to hide or the lack of resources for them, or all of these points together.

In any case, there was not a single living animal or servant from that region there, except for one, which was not an animal and which was not from that region either.

It was another individual, a person, he was wearing a cloak, hooded, it was dark in color, but it wasn't black.

He was walking up that hill while talking to himself, he was probably thinking out loud.

At the same time he passed that deserted dirt road.

- This order will be easy, they said! -Person with Cloak

- It's very close, they said! -Person with Cloak

- Only 4 days of walking they said! -Person with Cloak

- But they forgot to mention the fact that there were only mountains and hills all along the way! -Person with Cloak

- 4 days? Of course it is!!!! Shit attendants! -Person with Cloak

- Damn it! That's why no one had taken this order before! -Person with Cloak

- My feet and legs are killing me! What the hell! -Person with Cloak

- I'm going to make a complaint about this dubious guidance at the next headquarters or center I find! -Person with Cloak

- They will see! -Person with Cloak

- Oh.... -Person with Cloak

He takes a deep breath and continues walking.

- No, actually they won't. -Person with Cloak

- Nothing will come of it, and they will just ignore my complaint anyway. -Person with Cloak

- I'll just have extra work making this complaint and even if the other Deliverer guys see me complaining, they'll laugh in my face. -Person with Cloak

- We Deliverers are worth nothing anyway, so it's obvious. -Person with Cloak

- The only thing I can do is talk and complain to myself? -Person with Cloak

- Oh damn... If I keep thinking out loud like that all the time and it becomes a mania and I end up doing it without realizing it in public or around someone. -Person with Cloak

- They'll end up thinking I'm crazy for talking to myself. -Person with Cloak

- Ow, ow... But it's also not like I have anything better to do besides talk to myself when I'm traveling alone. -Person with Cloak

- Damn, I'm still irritated by the half-assed instructions they gave me and this stupid map of this region they sold me. -Person with Cloak

- When was the last time you updated this crap? -Person with Cloak

- 10? 50 years ago? -Person with Cloak

- Tsk, probably never since this one was made. -Person with Cloak

- Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…. And to make matters worse, it's very hot. -Person with Cloak

He stops walking and takes something off his back, he had a small bag attached to his belt, among other things, but you couldn't see it very well because the cloak was covering everything.

Then he reaches forward and opens it, and it becomes clear that he also has gloves on both hands.

And what he had taken out of his bag was a pocket watch.

- 12:40, that's why it's already so hot.. -Person with Cloak

- From now on the sun and heat will only get worse.. -Person with Cloak

He looks around looking for something.

- There aren't even any trees here, the closest ones aren't even really close, in fact, they're very far away. -Person with Cloak

He smiled.

- Well, it's not like I'm going to waste daylight so I can stop and rest for a while. -Person with Cloak

- Uhm, no really, no way. -Person with Cloak

- Between maybe having to walk at night and running the risk of encountering a monster and burning in the sun during the day. -Person with Cloak

- Burning in the sun during the day is great, it even feels like paradise. -Person with Cloak

He takes a deep breath.

- Even so…-Person with Cloak

- Is there still a long way to go? I didn't think I was still that far from this village. -Person with Cloak

- Well, at least I didn't have unexpected encounters with any monsters during this last journey. -Person with Cloak

After saying this he starts to think.

[It's been a long time since the last time I took a delivery order to some distant place where there was no caravan there, I think it was a bad idea in the end, even though the payment was great, it's been 2 months since I'm walking.] -Person with Cloak

- And even so I didn't reach my goal, next time I'll think better about the matter, even though there's another delivery very close by that pays well... -Person with Cloak

- Walking for a long distance is really tiring and exhausting, perhaps not worth the price. -Person with Cloak

He takes a rolled-up paper from under his cloak and opens it.

- According to the map, the Village of Sojúara is right after this hill. -Person with Cloak

- Well, let's go, shall we.. -Person with Cloak

After walking for a while longer, he finally reaches the top of the hill.

- Finally. -Person with Cloak

He was panting from walking without stopping, but when he looked ahead he could already see the Village.

- It looks like today I'll be able to sleep under a roof and not outdoors, that's great! It will be a good night's sleep in a long time! -Person with Cloak

As he said this he smiled a little.

Then he removes the hood of the cloak that covered his face, he was a man, he appeared to be young, between 17 and 20 years old, and had black hair.

After taking some breath, the boy starts walking again and heads towards the village.

As he approached the entrance of the village he saw that at the entrance there was a man with a robust body and orange hair wielding a spear, he was probably a watchman or a guard to warn of possible invaders and protect themselves from them.

The guard had already been keeping an eye on the boy from a distance, ever since he saw him on the road.

And when the boy got close enough, the man immediately pointed his gun at him as if he was ready to attack.

- Hold on! Who are you? And what do you want in our Village? -Man with Spear

With an expression of disappointment, the boy stares at him while placing his right hand on his waist and looking at him smiling.

- I am a Deliverer coming from the Siloponivid City Post Office, I came to make a delivery. -Boy with Cloak

The man is surprised by the boy's statement.

- You? A Deliverer? Don't come with such blatant lies brat. -Man with Spear

- You must be just some bandit trying to invade our village! -Man with Spear

The man then points his spear at the boy's face.

But before the guard was able to say anything more, the boy took off the glove from his right hand and raised it, showing the back of his hand to him, with J628 written on it.

- A Deliverer code? -Man with Spear

After seeing this, the man soon lowers his spear.

- I'm sorry for being rude, but would you allow me to check your code? -Man with Spear

- Yeah, it's okay. -Boy with Cloak

The boy approaches and lets the man examine his hand.

[It seems that at least he knows about this, after all, a Deliverer code is written by magic, it is not something that anyone can easily replicate.] -Boy with Cloak

- There really isn't any kind of flaw in it. -Man with Spear

- He's true. -Man with Spear

The man looks at the boy, with a surprised look.

- I'm sorry again for my mistake. -Man with Spear

- It's okay, it was nothing. -Boy with Cloak

- Well, so now I can pass? -Boy with Cloak

-Oh! Yes of course! I'm sorry about earlier, I was a bit rude. -Man with Spear

- I didn't imagine I would see such a young boy as a Deliverer. -Man with Spear

- At least I had never seen one in all these years. -Man with Spear

 - It's actually quite common, they probably just never came to this region... -Boy with Cloak

- I see, it makes sense.. -Man with Spear

- It's okay, don't worry, you were just doing your job. -Boy with Cloak

- I'm really sorry, my name is Dylan, it's a pleasure to meet you and what's your name? -Dylan

As Dylan spoke he showed a smile on his face, he seemed to be happy to see a traveler, but the boy didn't seem to care much about it.

- You know that names are not important for Deliverers, you can call me by my code or just Deliverer. -Boy with Cloak

- It's been a long trip, don't get me wrong, I'm very tired and therefore in a hurry. -Boy with Cloak

- I would like to finish this before dark so I can get some rest, we can talk another time. -Boy with Cloak

Dylan soon noticed the boy's lack of interest in talking and became a little discouraged.

[It's true, he's been walking for several days, I didn't even think about it.] -Dylan

- You're right, it must have been a long trip after all. -Dylan

- I came to deliver a letter and a small package to Brayden, do you know this man? -Boy with Cloak

- Brayden-sama? He is the Village Leader. -Dylan

- Huh? The Village Elder? Could you show me the way to it? -Boy with Cloak

- Oh, of course! No problem at all, I can even take you to him if you want. -Dylan

- Yes, it will be of great help, thank you. -Boy with Cloak

Upon hearing this, Dylan smiled again and quickly recovered his spirits, it was very easy to notice.

[He's a very sincere guy, it's easy to understand him.] -Boy with Cloak

After walking a little, they arrive at the Village Leader's house.

- Wait here, I'll let him know that you came here to see him. -Dylan

- Right. -Boy with Cloak

[Even after we walked around the city, I don't remember seeing anything that even looked familiar, in the morning I'll walk around the city more calmly, but it looks like it's not here either.] -Boy with Cloak

While the boy was thoughtful with his hand on his chin looking down, Dylan returned without him noticing.

- Hey Kid? -Dylan

- Boy? -Dylan

- Hey Kid, are you listening? -Dylan

- Hmm? -Boy with Cloak

- What is that? Was he so tired that he fell asleep standing up? -Dylan

-Haha! -Dylan

- Yeah, right there... -Boy with Cloak

- I understand, haha.. -Dylan

- Well, shall we? -Dylan

- He said you can see him now, so come with me. -Dylan

- Right, thanks. -Boy with Cloak

When he arrived in the living room of the house, there was a man with brown hair and a beard waiting for him.

[Hm… For an elder, he is not that old, he appears to be in his 50s, perhaps he must have inherited the rank from the last elder earlier than expected.] -Boy with Cloak

- Welcome Deliverer, I'm Brayden. And what's your name? -Brayden

- Thank you for having me Brayden-sama. -Boy with Cloak

- As for my name, I prefer not to say it, you can call me by my Code or just Deliverer. -Boy with Cloak

The boy raises his hand taking off his glove and shows his Code J628 to Brayden.

- I understand. It is true that Deliverers can identify themselves this way or just by their Code if they wish. -Brayden

- As you wish then, Deliverer. -Brayden

Brayden looks at Dylan.

- Thanks for bringing him here Dylan, you're dismissed. -Brayden

- It was nothing Brayden-sama. -Dylan

Dylan then leaves.

And Brayden extends his hand to the boy, directing him to the chairs so they can sit down.

After sitting down.

- So what did you come to deliver to me? -Brayden

- A letter and a small package. If you can confirm the veracity and integrity of both. -Deliverer

The boy places them both on the small table in front of them, and after Brayden takes a look at them both and sees a symbol stamped on top of each one.

- Both are still sealed and here really are the Post Office stamps. -Brayden

- So, if you could do me a favor and confirm receipt. -Deliverer

- Certainly. -Brayden

The boy takes a sheet from under his cloak and places it on the table.

Brayden takes a stamp and presses it against the sheet and signs his name on it.

- With that, the delivery was effectively completed, right my dear Deliverer? -Brayden

- Yes, exactly. -Deliverer

- So what do you plan to do now? -Brayden

- I'm going to look for somewhere I can spend the night, and tomorrow I plan to walk around the village a little before leaving. -Deliverer

- I understand. -Brayden

- So, if Brayden-sama could tell me somewhere I could stay, it would be a great help. -Deliverer

- Well, how about spending the night here? It's not like there's an inn in a village as small as this. -Brayden

- Oh, I couldn't bother you with that. -Deliverer

- Actually it wouldn't be a bother, but I would like you to do me a favor in return. -Brayden

- A favor? And what favor would that be? -Deliverer

-I would like you to talk to my son about his work and clarify his doubts. -Brayden

- Why would you want something like that? -Deliverer

- He wants to work as a Deliverer in the future so he can leave the Village, and be able to visit other Cities and other countries. -Brayden

- But, that's not what you want, right? -Deliverer

Brayden makes a sad expression.

- You, more than anyone else, know the dangers he will face, don't you? -Brayden

- Got it, do you want me to scare him or something then? -Deliverer

- Maybe some lies to make everything even scarier and sound even more dangerous? -Deliverer

- No, you don't need to lie or get to that point.. -Brayden

- I think just the truth of what your work is like should be enough. -Brayden

- Yeah, the truth... It should work... -Brayden

- But if you realize that it won't work... You can resort to that then. -Brayden

- I understand... -Deliverer

[The truth is? The truth can actually be much harsher than some sweet lies depending on the occasion.] -Deliverer

- Okay, I accept. -Deliverer

- Very well, then let's talk over dinner. -Brayden

Later that day, at Brayden's house.

Arriving at dinner time, they gather in the dining room, this time Brayden's son and his wife were present too.

She was a woman with brown hair and looked younger than Brayden by maybe 15 to 20 years, and her son, like his father, had brown hair.

The son appeared to be very young, around 12 to 13 years old.

- Thank you for inviting me to dinner. -Deliverer

- It was nothing. -Brayden

As he says this, Brayden stretches his hand out in front of his wife and son.

This is my wife Eloise and my son Bryson. -Brayden

- It's an honor to meet you Eloise-sama and Bryson-sama. -Deliverer

- Happy to meet you too Deliverer. -Eloise

- Happy to meet you too Deliverer. -Bryson

Bryson looks at the Deliverer smiling, and in a sudden excitement he starts to ask.

- So how long have you been a Deliverer? Have you visited many places? Have you been to other countries? -Bryson

The Deliverer is surprised by the boy's sudden barrage of questions.

- Bryson! What did we talk about before about your attitude? -Eloise

When his mother caught his attention, the boy immediately stopped.

- I'm sorry Mom, I'm sorry Deliverer. -Bryson

- Don't worry, it wasn't a big deal, I was just surprised by your excitement. -Deliverer

- It's because I've never talked to a Deliverer in person, so I was very excited. -Bryson

- It's okay, I know what it's like... -Deliverer

Eloise looks at her son angrily, and he calms down.

- Well, first let's eat before the food gets cold. -Eloise

- That's right, after dinner you'll have plenty of time to talk. -Brayden

Everyone sits at the table and starts to eat.

However, young Bryson could barely contain his excitement, while he was eating he was constantly looking at the Deliverer.

[He can barely stand it as we finish dinner, to start his questions again, he actually seems very excited about this idea of being a Deliverer.] -Deliverer

The Deliverer looks at Brayden, who returns the look with a sad smile.

Then the Deliverer remembers the other conversation he had with Brayden before dinner.

- You don't want to keep him here in the Village forever against his will, and you don't mind him leaving, but in that case, you won't be able to stop him from being a Deliverer when he comes of age. -Deliverer

- You just don't want him to be a Deliverer, right? -Deliverer

- That's right. -Brayden

- I would like you to avoid talking about the positive points of being a Deliverer, while answering your questions. -Brayden

- I understand, you want me to tell the truth, but you also want to prevent him from seeing the merits of this work. -Deliverer

- It would be easier to just lie to him or distort the story a little. -Deliverer

- Maybe, but we always have a Deliverer coming to the Village like you every year. -Brayden

- At some point he would manage to ask another Deliverer directly when you weren't around looking and then that would be the end of this farce. -Deliverer

- Exactly. -Brayden

- That's why I'm asking you, can you do this? -Brayden

- I will do the best I can. -Deliverer

Brayden had a very serious expression on his face.

[He really cares about his son.] -Deliverer

- Very well, I'll do my best. -Deliverer

Back to the dinner table.

All of them had already finished eating.

And the boy could barely stand it to begin his questions. Seeing this, the Deliverer looks at his parents and smiles.

- Well, since we're done, now I can start answering your questions. -Deliverer

Bryson smiles as he places his hands on the table showing a lot of excitement.

- How many years have you worked as a Deliverer? -Bryson

- It's been a little over ten years. -Deliverer

- Huh? Has it been that long? Incredible. -Bryson

- You've certainly visited many different Villages and Cities, right? -Bryson

- Yes, I've been to many places and seen several different Cities and Villages. -Deliverer

- That's so cool! Have you ever been to any other country? -Bryson

- Yes, I've been to some. -Deliverer

The boy's eyes lit up when he heard these things, but his parents seemed to be more worried with each passing second and the Deliverer noticed this.

- Not just cities, but different countries, different cultures, all of this is so incredible, just hearing about it makes me even more excited to be able to work as a Deliverer. -Bryson

Eloise, while trying to maintain her composure, looks desperately at Brayden.

Brayden was obviously not happy with the Deliverer answers and he knew it.

- Deliverer, is it true that all Deliverers have a Code painted with Magic on the back of their right hands? -Bryson

- Yes it is true. -Deliverer

The Deliverer raises his hand, taking off his glove and shows the boy his Code.

- J628? Do they have any meaning? Is it different for each person? -Bryson

- No, no meaning really, it's just a letter and number that follows a certain sequence and alphabetical order, when I registered that was her current number. -Deliverer

- So yes, it's different for everyone. -Deliverer

- Sequel? How does it work? -Bryson

- I don't know if it varies for each country, but where I registered, it followed a standard, very strict in order of registration. -Deliverer

- It started from A001 to A999, when it reached registration number A999, it would go to the next letter of the alphabet and start counting again from number 1 again, that is, the next one would be B001. -Deliverer

- So when you registered, you were already number 628 in the alphabetical order J? -Bryson

- That's right Bryson, you understand quickly. -Deliverer

- Hehe. -Bryson

It was clear that Bryson was very happy with the conversation they were having.

- There are many more Deliverers than I imagined. -Bryson

- So it's actually a much less dangerous job than my father used to say, since there are so many people. -Bryson

Brayden begins to lose his composure and his mother lets her concern show.

- That's not how things are, my son. -Brayden

- How not? -Bryson

- Didn't you hear him say how many years he has worked as a Deliverer and how many people have already been registered? -Bryson

- Imagine how many more have been registered after him since then? -Bryson

Brayden was clearly frustrated at not being able to take the conversation in the direction he wanted and was beginning to despair.

- Son, this is… -Brayden

- This is what? -Bryson

[Isn't it the truth?...] -Deliverer

- Your father is right, boy. -Deliverer

The Deliverer gets up and everyone stops talking and looks at him.

- What? -Bryson

- That's not quite how things are. -Deliverer

- I hope you forgive me for my lack of decorum. -Deliverer

The Deliverer takes off the shirt and vest he was wearing and throws them on the floor.

Then everyone is surprised to see his body.

He was covered in scars, large, small and some appeared to have been caused by very deep wounds.

- I've actually been working as a Deliverer for ten years, but do you know how many times I've been attacked? -Deliverer

- How many times have I come across monsters? -Deliverer

- How many times have I almost died? -Deliverer

- And in all of them I almost didn't manage to escape with my life, many of these times I survived by pure luck or pure chance... -Deliverer

- I will never forget how many times I was on the brink of death. -Deliverer

- These scars are proof of that. -Deliverer

- In this job where you can be attacked at any time.. -Deliverer

- Where you can encounter monsters at any time... -Deliverer

- Where you can die at any time...… -Deliverer

The Deliverer has a serious expression on his face.

- Who would want to work with this voluntarily? -Deliverer

- It's because? -Deliverer

The frustrated boy retorts.

- But even if that's the case, you keep working on it and managed to stay alive, and so did a lot of other people, didn't you? -Bryson

- Ah, are you talking about the number of registered Deliverers? -Deliverer

- Well over half of them have already died. -Deliverer

- What? -Bryson

- They disclose the number of registered Deliverers, but they don't say how many of them have died, you know? -Deliverer

- At least not for the general public, but for us who are Deliverer, they always inform us about this. -Deliverer

- So we know very well what it's like. -Deliverer

Everyone in the room is surprised by what the Deliverer says.

- Do you remember the Registration Code in our hands? -Deliverer

- They are not just for identification. -Deliverer

- They are used to monitor whether we are still alive, that is, our vital signs. When a Deliverer dies, the Code in our hand disappears. -Deliverer

They are surprised to hear this.

- And what happens then? You know? -Deliverer

None of them can answer the question and they remain silent.

- Well, that was expected.. -Deliverer

- You know, when we register, the process is very simple, the magician who is stationed at that branch uses magic, mixing our blood with ink. -Deliverer

- And with this ink and magic, he writes our Code in a blank record book that is always open at that branch or Postal Headquarters, but each one has its own and they are not interconnected in any way, they work independently. -Deliverer

- Oh, and the place where you register has 3 of these books, so they make 3 registrations just in case something happens to the book that is exposed. Obviously the others are kept secret for safety. -Deliverer

- After your code is written on it with this specific ink, it dissolves and disappears from the logbook page after 24 hours, thus leaving the page blank again. -Deliverer

- Oh, and of course there is a normal record book, made with normal ink, in alphabetical and numerical order, with all the records made to date at all headquarters and branches. -Deliverer

- This way they share the records, so there are no Deliverers with the same code. -Deliverer

- And it is in this book that employees check whether the Deliverers are active, retired, on the run or dead, and like the previous one, there are 3 of these books too, which are kept in the same way for security. -Deliverer

- But back to the case of the first blank book. -Deliverer

- There's a good reason why this record book for new Deliverers always remains open, even though it's completely blank. -Deliverer

- And do you know which one it is? -Deliverer

- No.. -Bryson

Bryson's parents also give a nod.

- No, of course they don't know, this is also not generally known to the public, after all, they love to limit this type of information until the moment new members register.. -Deliverer

- If they didn't do it like this, the registration rate for new Deliverers would definitely decrease.. Haha.. -Deliverer

- However, leaving this to be said until the last moment, the person will already be so hopeless that they will rarely give up at this point.. Hahaha… -Deliverer

- But anyway, the reason he is always open is quite simple too. -Deliverer

- When we die, our Code appears again on the blank page of the book of new records. -Deliverer

- Of course, it only appears in a single city, and in a single book, the book in which we registered as Deliverers. -Deliverer

- And this time it doesn't appear with the color of ink, but in a blood red color. -Deliverer

- And it is also visible there for 24 hours, from the moment it appears. -Deliverer

- More than enough time to show the Postal Headquarters that this Deliverer just died and with that, the employees who check the book 4 times a day will see this and then share the information among all the Headquarters and branches, so that they can register in the normal record book where there are all the codes of all registered Deliverers. -Deliverer

- It is something well organized, in addition to being public information at the Postal Headquarters, so all Deliverers know this, and how it works. -Deliverer

- And this works very well, since whenever you pick up a new job, the Deliverer has to tell you your city of registration and code, so they can immediately check with the city of origin of your registration, using a Mana crystal for communication with the help of the Wizard who is stationed there. -Deliverer

- And with that they easily find out if you are using a fake code, the code of someone dead, or if you are just a fugitive, who ran away without doing the job and without returning the advance you received for the work, I've seen this happen in front of the my eyes a few times, so I know exactly what it's like... -Deliverer

- And I've also seen several Deliverer dying in front of me, without me being able to do anything. -Deliverer

- So... As your father said, that's not quite how things are. -Deliverer

- It's much worse than you can imagine. -Deliverer

- The fact is that last year a total of 1361 deaths of Deliverer were recorded, which was a very considerable increase in deaths compared to the year before last. -Deliverer

- So this job is much more dangerous than before. -Deliverer

- Last time I saw, the most recent Deliverer records had already arrived on X872. -Deliverer

- They estimated that at this rate at the end of next year they should reach Z999 registration. -Deliverer

- But if all this is true, what will happen when they reach that number? -Brayden

- And truth! Are they going to start using codes from previously killed Deliverer or something? -Bryson

-Nothing that complicated... -Deliverer

- Nothing really, they said they will just start the count again, but now from A1000 to A9999, and so on until reaching Z9999. -Deliverer

- And they've already said that from that point on the codes will be written on the arm where there is space for a larger code. -Deliverer

- Hahaha.. -Deliverer

The Deliverer takes a deep breath.

- They really think about everything, don't they? -Deliverer

Everyone was already quite scared by everything the Deliverer was saying, even the boy who was excited before had lost all that excitement and now he couldn't say a word.

The Deliverer looks at Brayden.

- Brayden-sama remember when he asked me about my name before and I preferred not to say it? -Deliverer

- Yes I recall. -Brayden

- It wasn't that I didn't want to tell you my name. -Deliverer

- I just don't know what my name is. -Deliverer

Everyone is amazed to hear this.

- What do you mean you don't know your name? -Brayden

- I don't remember anything about my past, one day I simply opened my eyes and saw myself buried in snow near a city in the north of the continent, when I finally got out of there I saw that I was in the middle of snow and my clothes were covered in blood. -Deliverer

- Apparently I was in a caravan on the way to that city and we were attacked by monsters and I ended up hitting my head somewhere and ended up lucky there somehow. -Deliverer

- But the most important thing was, I didn't know who I was, I didn't remember anything, what was my name? Where was I from? How did I get there? Did I have a house? A family? Relatives? Friends? Someone who cared about me? I didn't remember anything. -Deliverer

- Even now, after so many years, I still can't even remember my name. -Deliverer

The three were in shock, they didn't know how to react to what they just heard.

- I thought that by being in this job and going to several different Villages and Cities I would find something about my past. -Deliverer

- After all, when you see something you've seen before or something familiar you can recover some of your memories. -Deliverer

- That's what the doctor who treated me at that time told me. -Deliverer

The Deliverer gives a slight smile and then appears frustrated.

- That's why I'm in this job, that's why I became a Deliverer! -Deliverer

- Even with the high death rate and high risk! -Deliverer

- Even though the payments for the jobs are high, almost no one wants this job, you know why kid? -Deliverer

- Only desperate people who really need money, those who have nowhere else to go or those with nothing to lose take this job! -Deliverer

- But of course, there are very rare exceptions, such as those who have been soldiers, mercenaries, wizards, adventurers or things like that, who have some experience in real combat, whether with humans or monsters and have the strength to do so, who end up entering this delivery job to try to get rich. -Deliverer

- But what about you, Bryson? -Deliverer

- Why would you want to take a chance on this shitty job? -Deliverer

- Unlike me you have something to lose, and unlike them you have no experience in combat, and I imagine you don't want to get rich, right? -Deliverer

- After all, you can die at any moment… -Deliverer

- You have friends and people who care about you.. -Deliverer

- You have your parents… You have your family! -Deliverer

- You're not like me... -Deliverer

- I needed to go to different places in other regions, see other places, other cities, glimpse different things, to try to find something familiar and be able to remember something. -Deliverer

- But going in search of my past wouldn't be easy. -Deliverer

- How could I go to so many places? -Deliverer

- Traveling like that from one place to another... -Deliverer

- This would cost a lot of money and I didn't have any money, I didn't even have clothes, how would I buy supplies for these trips? -Deliverer

- At first I thought about getting a normal job in the city, but the pay wasn't good enough for me to be able to make these trips. -Deliverer

- It was then that I came across the Post Office of that city and saw that that place was the solution to all the problems I had at that time. -Deliverer

- I didn't need a background or knowledge in any specific area to work as a Deliverer, I didn't even need my name... -Deliverer

- The only thing they needed was to register my Code. -Deliverer

- The pay was good, and I would still be able to travel to other regions in the process. -Deliverer

- And well, the only real price to pay is the enormous risk to my life that I take every day during my travels, whether because of thieves or murderers, or monsters... -Deliverer

-But I have no other choice... -Deliverer

- But what about you Bryson? -Deliverer

- To make your dream come true you must have other alternatives, unlike me.. -Deliverer

Bryson swallows hard and questions the obvious to him.

- So that's why you work as a Deliverer? -Bryson

The boy already had a sad look on his face when he asked him this, as did his parents.

- Yes, because... No matter how small, I would like to remember something... -Deliverer

- I can't just ignore the fact that they may have given their lives for me that day I had that accident and not remember anything about them or me. -Deliverer

- I feel like I'm denying their sacrifice, or diminishing their importance.. -Deliverer

- But that's just a hypothesis, maybe all my relatives were already dead before that, maybe I only had friends or companions there, or maybe I was already alone since then... -Deliverer

- Whatever... Whatever the truth is, I don't care... -Deliverer

- I can't just stop looking for my past... -Deliverer

- I can't just move on living my life without knowing anything about my past, and worse, without even knowing my name. -Deliverer

- As I am now, I am a nobody. -Deliverer

- Any person. -Deliverer

- Someone of no importance whatsoever. -Deliverer

- I don't want to be like this until the last days of my life. -Deliverer

- At least when my time comes and I'm going to die, I want to be someone. -Deliverer

- I want to be myself…. I want to be who I really am. -Deliverer

- And for that I need to remember who I am. -Deliverer

Hearing all this, everyone becomes silent.

Nobody knew what to say in that situation.

The Deliverer smiles a little.

-This is the only thing that has kept me going all these years... -Deliverer

He takes a deep breath and looks down.

- And that is… My desire to discover something about my past. -Deliverer

- Is there anyone who knows me alive out there? -Deliverer

- Waiting for me or looking for me? -Deliverer

- Or did everyone who knew me die that day or before that? -Deliverer

- Is there really no one waiting for my return somewhere? -Deliverer

- Are they all really dead? -Deliverer

- Or are they all alive? -Deliverer

- Maybe there's someone there? -Deliverer

- And yes, do he or they care about me? Or maybe not? Do they hate me? -Deliverer

- I've thought about this a lot before and I've decided that no matter what the answer is, I want to know, I want to remember. -Deliverer

- And only after that, I will decide what I will do with the rest of my life. -Deliverer

The Deliverer looks up and looks at them all again with a sad look.

- So I continued, I thought if I went somewhere different and saw something familiar during those trips I might actually remember something. -Deliverer

- I thought you remembered something, anything. -Deliverer

- I could finally move on, and live for those who sacrificed themselves for me. -Deliverer

- I saw horrible things during my travels. -Deliverer

The Deliverer smiles again with a less sad look.

- But….. I also saw many beautiful and incredible things.. -Deliverer

- And I also met people equally beautiful and ugly, both externally and internally and vice versa.. -Deliverer

- Just as I met very good and very bad people too. -Deliverer

- And I even felt happy sometimes, seeing new things and different places during my travels. -Deliverer

- But none of that managed to fill the emptiness I feel. -Deliverer

- Anyway, nowadays I think everything is fine, after all there's not much I can do about it, besides what I've been doing to date.. -Deliverer

- And after so many years, I understand this very well.. -Deliverer

- I've kind of accepted this situation... -Deliverer

- If that's true, why do you look so sad? -Bryson

- Why are you crying? -Bryson

Tears were streaming down the Deliverer's face without him even noticing.

As he looked at her hand, tears fell on her.

And with that he could no longer maintain his smile.

He then puts his hand on his face and finally realizes that he has been crying for some time.

[Ah.... Tears....] -Deliverer

[It's been a while since I cried...] -Deliverer

[It's been so long since I felt like this...] -Deliverer

[What the hell...] -Deliverer

- Yeah, it seems like I still haven't accepted it so well after all... -Deliverer

- Even after surviving this job for so long. -Deliverer

- I haven't found a single clue until today... -Deliverer

- No matter where I go, I don't find anything, was everything I did all these years in vain? -Deliverer

- It's been ten years since I woke up in the middle of that snow. -Deliverer

- And nothing has changed since then. -Deliverer

- This emptiness I feel because I don't know anything… -Deliverer

- It's still the same... -Deliverer

- Why does it hurt so much? -Deliverer

- Why does this pain never go away... -Deliverer

- Why don't I remember anything? -Deliverer

- I want to remember. -Deliverer

- I so want to remember something. -Deliverer

-But no matter what I do, it's no use... -Deliverer

- Why can't I do it?..... -Deliverer

[I really want to remember no matter what...] -Deliverer

[Anything…] -Deliverer

[No matter how small it was.....] -Deliverer

[That would be great…] -Deliverer

[No matter what price I had to pay for it…] -Deliverer

[I just wanted…..] -Deliverer

[Ah….…] -Deliverer

The Deliverer appears to be frustrated, and Brayden decides to talk to him.

- I didn't know, I'm sorry for asking you to talk to my son about this. -Brayden

Brayden looked at the Deliverer with a sad look, he looked like he was about to cry too.

- It doesn't matter, it's not like you knew that... -Deliverer

- It was also good to remember why I'm doing all this to this day, even if it's useless. -Deliverer

- And even if it's useless, I won't stop. -Deliverer

- It's not useless! I know one day you will be able to remember! -Bryson

- I'm sure about that! -Bryson

Bryson stated this as tears ran down his face.

[Hearing this didn't make me less sad, or more motivated...] -Deliverer

[Maybe because I met them today? Maybe because I don't care about them at all? Or maybe both?] -Deliverer

[Am I a horrible person for thinking like this?] -Deliverer

[Anyway, I think I understand what he meant.] -Deliverer

[But... At this point, I just don't care...] -Deliverer

- Bryson is right. Someday you'll be able to remember something! -Eloise

- And truth! As long as you don't give up you still have a chance to remember something! -Brayden

The Deliverer finds himself looking at his hands as tears fall over them.

Then he starts to smile a little.

[As long as I don't give up?] -Deliverer

[I've wanted to give up several times, but...] -Deliverer

[But… I've come too far to give up now…] -Deliverer

[I can't give up anymore….] -Deliverer

[For me, giving up isn't even an option at this point...] -Deliverer

[I will never give up…] -Deliverer

[I've already sacrificed too much to get here….] -Deliverer

[I won't stop….] -Deliverer

[I will never... I will stop...….] -Deliverer

While he was lost in his thoughts, the Deliverer now had a serious look and a static expression, at the same time the others tried to change the subject.

- Well, it was a long night! I think we all better go to sleep. -Eloise

- I've already set up the guest room for you, so you can use it as you wish, okay Deliverer? -Eloise

- Oh? Okay, thank you very much. -Deliverer

- Your welcome. -Eloise

- Come on Bryson, you also need to go to sleep. -Eloise

- Right. -Bryson

The boy and his parents were still a little upset with the development of that situation, and preferred to leave in silence without discussing the subject further.

- Deliverer, you also need to rest, you just went through a long trip and now this... -Brayden

- These must have been very exhausting days for you. -Brayden

- Take as much time as you need to rest, don't worry about what time to get up tomorrow, no one will wake you up or bother you during your rest. -Brayden

So you can sleep all day if you want, this will help your tired body rest and regain your strength. -Brayden

- Yeah…. -Deliverer

- You are right…. -Deliverer

- I will, thank you…. -Deliverer

As he headed to the room, the Deliverer was still lost in his thoughts.

And like that he arrives at the room prepared for him, and after entering and closing the door he just lies down on the bed looking at the ceiling.

He kept thinking about what happened earlier.

[It really was a very long day and night…..] -Deliverer

[It's been a long time since I felt like this…..] -Deliverer

[I don't even remember the last time I felt this way….] -Deliverer

[When was the last time I felt this bad?…] -Deliverer

- Ah.. Maybe a few years…. -Deliverer

[Damn…..] -Deliverer

[I would prefer not to have to go through this again..] -Deliverer

[I feel this way....] -Deliverer

[It really sucks…..] -Deliverer

As the Deliverer thought this, tears streamed down his face once again.
