16 Petrywinkler

CASSADREI'S POV

The Petrywinkler had two interesting features. One, it was exceedingly small, I wondered if I had ever seen such a tiny Petrywinkler, even in the ancient scriptures... secondly, it was terribly fluffy. If it wasn't for it's red blazing eyes and the emanating glow, I would have mistaken it for a puppy. A very cute one.

I shook my head and scolded myself for immersing into such thoughts. I can't possibly compare a Petrywinkler to a puppy, these creatures have the power to cause catastrophe! We are currently floating in mid-air, powerless against it's imminent wrath and here I am, considering it cute! Even as I thought this, I couldn't help but wonder if such a tiny being possesses any wrath at all. Then, why is it attacking us?

It isn't a time to ponder upon such questions, it is a time to take control. I saw the horrific expression on everyone's faces, as the creature approached us menacingly. I could see it's pearly white fur glistening in the moonlight.

"Quick, give me your hand!" I told Michael, not sure if he would abide. He had better senses, I guess, because he promptly followed my command.

I held Michael's sweaty hands and exhaled slowly, trying to calm my nerves and unleash my strength.

I pushed myself to the ground, and with an effortless ease, Michael and I were slowly descended and hit the hard ground gently.

"Hey! How did you do it? We want to do this too!" Jake exclaimed desperately.

"Sshh..no time for explanations. Later." Michael snapped and gave me a triumphant smile.

The familiar feeling of warmth rushed through me, and this time I allowed it to flow and fuel my energy towards the accomplishment of my goal.

"Cassadrei, you may be extremely powerful one day but you'd do well to remember that true strength comes from happiness and warmth. When your heart is full, your powers shall flourish too." My father used to say.

I had always followed his dictum.

The Petrywinkler was amazed to see me overthrow it's powers and it let out a shrill  chirp of resentment.

"Calm down Michael, and just follow me."I instructed.

Michael turned pale, "You don't intend to pursue this odd creature, do you? Don't you think that we should flee?" He whispered urgently.

"Why is he speaking in hushed tones? Jaky, your friend has no manners! How are we supposed to know what he is saying?" Linda declared.

"I am saying that we should flee but your friend insists on forming a friendly alliance with this godforsaken animal!" Michael said irritated.

"Hey! Don't flee without us!" shouted Jake, thus ruining Michael's secret.

"No one is fleeing anywhere!" I said firmly, "let me deal with it. Just stay where you are."

"Well, hello??" Jake cried, swinging his flying feet. We ignored him.

I creeped stealthily towards the Petrywinkler, speaking in a calm voice.

"There's no need to be scared, little guy. We are not going to harm you. Trust me." I said, maintaining eye contact, and concentrating on the Petrywinkler.

It winced. Then it replied, in a surprisingly juvenile voice, "How are you speaking my language? Human don't speak Petrywinkler language, you speak Petrywinkler language, how? Me not understand how Human speak to me." The little being was thoroughly confused now. It's bluish hue disappeared, it's red eyes turned to a softer violet and it definitely looked like an extremely cute puppy now.

Also, Jake and Linda were unceremoniously dropped to the ground with a thud.

"I am your friend. Don't worry. Let me help you here. Why are you attacking us? We haven't done you any harm...and it's not your nature to pounce upon unsuspecting Mortal beings. You are not even supposed to be here." I said softly, getting closer.

"I don't know! They sent me to help, I had to help. I only know that I help them. I don't know what I am doing! I am supposed to help them, not talk to you!" The Petrywinkler shouted angrily and glowed again, it's red eyes returning! Jake and Linda were floating again.

"Guys what is happening to us?? Please tell us something, we are literally stuck here! And Michael, why is your girlfriend chirping strangely?" Jake said, exasperation ringing in his voice.

"She is not my girlfriend! I don't know why she is chirping…. she's weird!" Michael thundered.

I tried to ignore their comments and continued, " Please let me help you. Let me." I pleaded with it, maintaining eye contact all along as I tried to get inside the head of the creature. It was proving to be difficult, I had never tamed a Petrywinkler before. They are one of the most difficult ones to tame.

It was resisting. I didn't have my full fledged control over my power, and I could feel my concentration wavering, the thin hold on the Petrywinkler already slipping away. I struggled to maintain my hold.

"You are not a beast." I said gently, " You are not what they think you are. You are more than what others consider your kind. Be sure to remember the subtle differences. Do not harm unsuspecting individuals. Isn't it beneath you to hurt mere Mortals who are powerless against your wrath? Don't you think you should fight equals?"

It was working. The Petrywinkler slowly started retreating, confusing shrouding it's face once more. I could feel my grip tightening once again and I inched closer. The distance between us was reduced to a fraction now. I could see it's red eyes, the innocence beneath the storm. It was just a baby, one not trained enough to overcome manipulation…. I wondered who would have unleashed it.

The Petrywinkler's gaze softened as I lay my hands upon it tenderly. Then, all of a sudden there was a blazing explosion, only it was soundless and full of lights and colours. I realized, with a jolt, that this explosion was exactly similar to the one we had experienced at the Carnival, only this one was harmless and only full of light. It had been the Petrywinkler's work then, it was following me and it had wrecked havoc at the Carnival too.

The world disappeared in it's blurry of lights and for a moment, we were all blinded. Then, the dark returned….not the absolute darkness of before, but a more solid one... interspersed with the faint light from the streetlamps. The world was calm but not unbearably so, it was normal once again. Like the world that we are used to. The Petrywinkler had withdrawn its control.

The creature crawled towards me and started wiggling its tail, looking like an adorable little puppy as it swirled around and brushed it's voluminous furs against my ankles. I petted it in the back, rubbing the soft furs and it looked at me with moist eyes, grinding its teeth.

"Me sorry." It said, " Me had to attack you. Don't know why. Master told mamma to tell me to attack so I did, master held mamma in cell. Me need to save Mamma. I like you. Me don't want to kill you. But Me have to save Mamma. Me don't know what to do know." Saying so, it started crying vigorously. The red tears fell on the ground and seemed to corrode the surface.

I quickly said, "Who holds your Mamma? Tell me, don't be afraid. We can help you."

"You not able to help. You just a Human. Master very powerful, he will kill Mamma." The Petrywinkler cried.

"I am not a Human. Let me know, who is trying to harm you." I said with emphasis.

The Petrywinkler stared at me through tear stained eyes. Then it spoke,

"I don't know Master's name. We are not supposed to. He is a very Powerful Goblin, Mamma used to say. One of the most powerful Goblins that ever lived. He is the one who led Arphoelus to victory."
