3 Key to My Powers

Cassadrei's POV

I didn't feel like a living being anymore.

Trapped in this body of a silly human without any of my powers, how would you feel? Some might say...oh how the mighty have fallen! The throne Princess of Mefhaelore, Cassadrei now reduced to a mortal human with no more powers than a baby Goblin!

"Cassy! Here." My friend calls out.

I hate that name. I cannot understand, for the life of me, what is this human obsession with shortening their names into so called "cool" nicknames? But then there is so much about this world that bewilders me. Agh!

I have been here, in this human world for nearly eight years now. I was banished from Mafhaelore when I was Nineteen and now I must be twenty. It's funny to think of, when surrounded by these rapidly ageing mortals. Goblins have always aged slowly on principle, eight years of human life equals one year for a Goblin. Goblins also live really long, making ours the only species that can be called the near-immortals. Well, there are Vampires and Zombies...but they aren't really alive are they? "A true Goblin dies only in a battlefield." My Grandmother used to say, and true to her words, she died at the age of 860, sword in hand battling the Arphoelians in the Two hundredth "Battle between the Kingdoms".

And I, her granddaughter, would probably die a shameful death here in this mortal world, without my powers. I almost snort at the thought.

"Cassy let's try the fairywheel! Whooooo!!!" Linda tried to imitate the moving wheels of the gargantuan fairywheel that carried screaming adults, as it went round and round the vertical hemisphere. "No thanks. You can go if you want." I reply. Linda pouted her lips, the way she does when she fails to get something she desires. She's super rich and pampered...so she always gets what she desires. Sofosys says I should make new friends. But I don't want to go wheeling round the earth when I have better things to occupy my mind, like contemplating my doomed future!

I free myself from a sulking Linda, and breath a sigh of relief. Linda soon joins another group of whoooing girls, and as always, instantly mingles with them.

Far away, the sound of the local band playing is tearing my head off. How these mortals can listen to such atrocious noise and pass it off as music is beyond me!

Then, I catch sight of The Boy. He's wearing a crimson t-shirt with a badge marked "Medical Volunteer" on it. I've noticed him before on campus and everytime I did, I felt the same weird sensation coursing through my body….as if I've seen him before, as if we are somehow related. I can't comprehend the feeling.

Sofosys and I have been travelling widely, ever since we have come to Earth. Since, we don't age easily... it's not prudent for us to stay at one place for a long time. Sofosys' skill at almost everything has ensured that we were never without a living. He pretends to be my father, and here in Milton, he teaches Ancient Arts at the University of Milton. He, unlike me, is quite popular among his pupils.

I notice The Boy's eyes are on me, and to my chagrin, I realize that I have been staring at him for a long time as I was immersed in my thoughts. I quickly look away and as I turn there's a little boy.

"Please, can you help me open this?" He says pointing towards a can of berry flavoured toffees. I have no time for this and also I feel increasingly shameful as I realize The Boy is still looking at me. I cannot stay here.

To flee the scene, I approach Linda again. She has freed herself from her previous company and she's delighted to see me again. For once, I'm relieved to have found her.

"Ooooo! Let's go near that band Cassy, there's a really hot guy playing guitar...and I suppose the drummer is cute too, you can have the drummer!" Linda winked. She quickly got her lip gloss out and applied a generous amount on her already cherry red lips. Then, she caught my hand and literally dragged me all the way to the podium.

The loud music, the general aura of the place exuding too much energy and life repelled me strongly. At that moment, I wish to disappear into oblivion. Linda points out her hot crush, clearly too much excited about his ripping abs and tall stature, I give her a faint smile of acknowledgement.

It all happens too quickly for any of us to comprehend.

One moment there's fun and frolic around, and the next moment a piercing sound seems to engulf everything around turning my thoughts of disappearing into oblivion a vicious truth. There's a crash and screams resound in every direction, people running all around, confused and dazzled by what has just happened. I realize, I'm bleeding profusely from my face. As I touch it, my skin feels mutilated and my fingers are bloody…my face stings from pain. Pain isn't perceived by us the same way as humans, so the pain I feel is way less than the actual intensity of my wounds. If I am this wounded, what about others? And what the hell has just happened?

I look around frantically, searching for Linda. As I realize the intensity of the situation, some sort of blast has taken place at the site of the concert, I shudder to think what must have happened to her.

She's nowhere to be found. I feel an increasing sense of alarm, a tight feeling rising up my chest and trying to choke me. "Li-inda, are you okay? Where are you??" I can't even recognise my own voice.

"Hey you! Oh my God! You need to come with me right now. Are you okay? Oh God this is so much blood!" The Boy transpired out of nowhere and he tried to drag me out.

"No! My friend Linda, I need to find her…"  I trail off. I felt delirious and the pain kicking in seemed to muddle up my senses. As I seemed to lose consciousness, the last thing I see is The Boy arching over me, his deep blue eyes, his strong hands trying to hold me as I pass out into nothingness.

I don't know how long I was out. When I woke up, the daylight has dwindled and I found myself staring into a clear starless night sky through the window. My head hurt a little, but otherwise there's no stabbing pain that had crippled my faculties before. Involuntarily, I touch my face. My skin feels intact, there's no blood.

"You are awake. You have been unconscious for quite a long time. I was starting to get worried." The familiar voice of Sofosys greeted me.

"Linda? Where's Linda?" I ask, suddenly concerned. I also felt a twinge of shame as I realize that I had passed out from an injury. My powers really held no value on this godforsaken planet!

As if sensing my feelings, Sofosys said, "There's nothing to be afraid of Cassadrei. Pain is only natural, and it would be a fool to deny the presence of pain. As to your friend, she is doing good. She was thrown apart from you due to the impact of the blast and her limbs are fractured. However, her father will see to it, that she has the best medical care possible." Sofosys smiled calmly.

He then continued, "Coming to you, I have some concerns. A boy called me after the incident, he's the one that rescued you from the scene.  The blast seems to be due an accident, a short circuit in the band electrical network. However, I have other thoughts about it, thoughts that I'd rather keep to myself until I have further proof. Now, about you" he seemed to be choosing his words carefully- "He said you were grievously wounded. However, after you came to the hospital, the doctors couldn't find any trace of grave injury on your person. The boy was rebuked and he was thoroughly astonished. I agree with him though, you were injured pretty badly isn't it?"

"Yes, my face was mutilated. I-I felt it."  I said confounded.

"Curious, isn't it? That you should heal so miraculously fast. Now, if we were back at Mefhaelore, it would be quite natural as there you were in complete possession of your powers. However, we both know that you have shown no tangible evidence of possessing any of your Goblin powers on this planet. So, I ask, how did you heal so quickly?."

I was feeling light-headed. None of it makes sense.

"Does this mean, my powers are coming back?" I ask, couldn't help suppressing a ray of hope in my voice.

"Yes, but how? That's the burning question. You had been on this planet for a long time, and yet this never happened. And now, suddenly...how? We have to analyse the situation carefully. Who were you in contact with this time? Someone with whom you had no contact before.. That person might be the key to unlocking your dormant powers."

Sofosys said absent-mindedly, as he looked out of the window into the descending darkness outside.

I knew the answer even before he said it. The Boy. I had never been in contact with him before today. A thousand questions burned inside me. How? Why?

I tried to recall his face, his jet black hair strewn all over his face, those piercing blue eyes that reminded me so much of the Other one. The Other one, who had absolutely ruined my life.
