We use it for defense most likely the Jutsu of those Blood Dragons that Chino uses against Sasuke, We have a bridge that connects the island with the other side of the lake, because of our jutsu we are very isolated from other people, we have civilians who live with us of course, but many are afraid of us as they are we are seen as weird, our clan almost never leaves our island, as we have everything we need here, we only go out on missions or when a clan attacks the farms of civilians across the Lake
