3 First battle.

[Pancham

-Pancham, the Playful Pokémon. Though it tries to look tough, Pancham has trouble being taken seriously by opponents.]

[Known Moves]

Taunt

Arm Thrust

Tackle

Low Sweep

(AN: he won't only be able to know 4 moves, just felt it was a good starting point. And though while I won't be using levels to signify growth I will approximate any evolutions by how much I think they leveled up. Though at the end of the day the battles and the intensity of the battles will weigh more than anything else.)

"Not a bad move set Pancham, though to be honest I don't really know what moves are best for you. In the anime they only really showed you in contests, so I guess I'll just have to wing it." I say with a shrug to which Pancham just nods absently. I suppose he doesn't know what I mean by showing him in the anime.

Oh well, no time to think about that as we come across our first wild Pokémon. One that I will not be catching, rattata.

Pancham digs his feet into the ground and lets out a small growl causing the Rattata to turn toward us and let out its own hissing growl.

"Rattata is a normal type, so Pancham use arm thrust and follow it up with low sweep!"

At my command Pancham dashed forward and an energy coated his right arm. The Rattata was able to dodge the first thrust, but arm thrust is good for at least 2 before it loses power.

The second connects with the rat Pokémon just as it landed from its previous dodge, catching it directly on the head causing it roll backward from the force. The energy coating Pancham's arm died down and he immediately slid into a low sweep that sent the already rolling rat careening into a nearby tree where it sprawled out defeated.

"Good job Pancham! We won our first battle, the first of many." I say while walking up and patting Pancham on the head, his head pushed against my hand in pleasure.

"Pan pan!" He eventually responded while crossing his arms and showing off his signature smirk.

"Yes, yes you're very strong. Now come on, I would like to get in a lot more battles before we reach Viridian. Perhaps we'll even catch a Pokémon along the way if I like them."

Though I guess thinking back to the anime I don't remember any good Pokémon on route 1. Hmmm, maybe if I reach Misty before Ash I could ask her to fish up a Pokémon from the stream she was at? I guess we'll find out.

*Several hours later*

"Pancham, finish it off with an arm thrust!"

The weakened Pidgey tried to fly off only to be met with Pancham's fist, knocking it out. Several other pidgey littered the ground as I took in the scene. Pancham had some small scrapes on his body from the resulting fight.

I suppose it's to be expected after he has fought multiple Mankey, Sandshrew, Rattata and pidgeys. Though I'm surprised I haven't found any Spearow? I wonder if that's a protagonist only encounter?

"Here Pancham, why don't you take a bit of break inside your Pokéball and I'll look for some oran berries for you."

Pancham looks at me hesitantly, before shaking his head No and standing firm beside me.

"Pan pan pancham." He says whilst still shaking his head.

"You don't want to leave my side even though you're injured?" I only get a nod in response but a smile crosses my lips.

"I see.. That's fine, but you do need to rest. Hop on my shoulder and you can keep a look out for me." Pancham looks at me out of the corner of his eye, debating my offer until he finally nods and climbs up onto my shoulder. Giving his head a scratch I begin walking again, following alongside a stream we came across in hopes of finding Misty.

"Hey, Nauta? Can you display the map to me like my inventory or can you only direct me?"

'Unfortunately at the moment my functions are limited to directions. Though I can list out known locations as any person or Pokémon you come in contact with will update my database.'

That causes me to pause in my steps as realization dawns on me.

"So we have a map that's got everywhere Professor Oak and those Pokémon have been?!"

An affirmative hum comes through the connection before Nauta speaks again.

'Yes, though like I said before my functions are limited and the data is only for any Kanto locations that have been visited. It is my assumption that we can't see the other areas until we too have visited those regions.'

I nod along as I mull over this new information. Though I wanted to be annoyed at not having all the map data right away it's not like it would make much difference. It's not as if I need the Johto or Hoenn maps while I'm journeying through Kanto anyways.

"Nauta, are there any berry patches listed that I could collect for Pancham?"

'Affirmative, would Kei like me to guide him to a nearby berry patch?'

"Yes, thank you Nauta."

'My pleasure.'

'Up ahead the stream becomes shallow enough to cross, one across head straight for 50 feet and slowly veer right into the forest. I will correct your course if you stray too far.'

Nodding my head, I pick up my pace and come across the shallow stretch Nauta was talking about. The stream only came up to my shins and further down I could the roaring of what sounded like a waterfall.

"Nauta, please pin this location so that we can come back here after we get the berries. Someone I wish to meet is near here."

'Understood.' Came her robotic response and I continued on into the forest.

I was worried that her directions were a little too vague but it turns out I was worried for nothing. Just like she said we eventually made it into a small clearing in the trees where a large patch of berries could be seen of all kinds.

I spotted oran, sitrus, Cheri, etc.. I walked up to a bush holding Oran berries, and passed a few to Pancham as I took one to try for myself. Because of my previous life as truck-kun I didn't feel fatigue or hunger, but I did want to try all the things I had never had the chance to before.

"It's good!" I exclaimed as I immediately grabbed another.

"Pancham!" The Panda on my shoulder agreed as it chowed through the 3 I gave him. It was amazing to see the wounds begin to heal though I could tell he was still fatigued and needed plenty of rest.

"Alright Pancham, let's gather up all the berries but let's leave at least a few of each as to not pick the place clean. I imagine wild Pokémon visit here when they are hungry or injured."

Pancham nodded and began gathering the berries and bring them to me and I sorted them into my inventory. Once we picked what we could I now had a nice collection of various berries. Not just ones that heal HP but also status berries that cure poison, paralysis etc..

Nauta guided us back to the shallow stream which we crossed and once again followed until we reached where the waterfall I heard was. Just a little ways down I could see the person I was looking for, made obvious by her bright orange hair.

It also confirmed something else that I had somewhat realized when Ash ran into me and checked my Trainer ID. We're older than the anime.

[Kei Honda

Age: 17

Hometown: Pallet

Hair: Brown

Eyes: Brown

Height: 5'10

Weight: 125 pounds

Benefactor: Professor Oak

Starter: Pancham]

I guess that makes Ash around 17 as well as he didn't seem much younger than me. Though I'm pretty sure I remember Misty being a couple years older so she must be anywhere from 18-20 already.

Anyways I maneuver down the hill beside the waterfall and approach Misty who was sitting on the ground with her rod in the stream, concentrating on her fishing.

"Hello there!" I call out but instead of the casual turn that I expected she jumped and turned around with a defensive look.

"Who are you?" She says as her right hand falls to her belt with her Pokeballs, giving me a cautious look. My head tilts to the side in confusion as this was not how I was expecting this encounter to go at all.

"Uh… my name is Kei, Kei Honda." The tension in her shoulders eases slightly but she still keeps a close eye on me. With them continuously flicking up to Pancham on my shoulder who wasn't pleased with the defensive tone Misty was having with me.

I honestly didn't know what to do with this scenario, I had just assumed I could walk up and start talking to her. Isn't that how humans talk to each other? Did I do something wrong?

"Well Kei Honda, what's the big idea sneaking up on a girl by themselves?" She said with her eyes narrowing again, and I couldn't help but frown slightly. I wasn't trying to sneak up on her after all…

"Er, uh well I wasn't trying to sneak up on you. I just saw-" I began only to get cut off by her.

"You just saw an attractive girl all alone and thought you would sneak up and assault them!" She said while pointing a finger at me accusingly. I raise my hands up waving them back forth.

"Huh? No! I'm a new trainer and saw you fishing in the stream and thought I'd ask if I could borrow it to capture a new Pokémon. All the Pokémon on route 1 are pretty weak so I figured I could catch a really strong water Pokémon for my team. Honest." I defended and she seemed to ease up some more.

"You like water pokemon?" She asks quietly.

Do I like water Pokémon? That's what she got out of that? Wait! It's Misty, maybe I can defuse this situation by praising water Pokémon.

"Ya! I mean who doesn't like water Pokémon?"

"Right?! They're just so much better than other Pokémon. Uh, no offense to that Pokémon on your shoulder." She says finally dropping her hand from her waist. I sigh internally at the situation fixing itself. I can't believe only my 3rd interaction with humans went like this. They are truly exhausting.

'Agreed.'

"It's fine, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. I'll just be on my way, I'd hate to bother you anymore." I say with a wave as I begin to head back up to the route only to be stopped by her.

"Wait! You said you wanted to borrow my fishing rod right? Well here, I feel bad for interrogating you like that so I would like to apologize with this." She said in embarrassment, not really meeting my eyes as she holds the rod out to me. I look at the rod for a few seconds before smiling and taking the rod from her hands.

"Ah, thank you. I'll try not to take up too much of your time then…"

"Misty." I look back at her confused as she just said her name out of the blue.

"Huh?" I ask with my head tilted to the right.

"That's my name. Misty." She said while looking at the ground her her cheeks seemed to gain a pink hue to them. I know from the anime I watched that usually signifies some sort of embarrassment? Surely she's not still embarrassed about before?

"Nice to meet you Misty. Like I said before my name is Kei. Thanks for allowing me to use your fishing rod." I respond with a smile as I turn back to the River and toss the line into the water.

Misty sits down next me, watching the waterline closely but when she notices my side glance she turns her head away slightly. Strange.. is she still embarrassed? I didn't get much time to think about it as the line tugged tight and I increased my grip on the handle.

"Hurry! Real it in!" Misty yells from my side as her hands clamp down on to my right shoulder.

"Pan! Pan!" Pancham echoes while mirroring her on my left shoulder.

I just keep my focus on the line and begin reeling and pulling on the line in a rhythm, finally getting it close to the shore where I stand up and with one last hard pull the water breaks revealing!

Author's note:

Bit of a cliffhanger here mainly because I wasn't completely sure which Pokémon I wanted him to get.

Poliwag get weird because then I would eventually have 2 Pokémon with the fighting type. That made me kind of think to go for a fighting team, but I didn't really want to do that.

The others were:

Seel

Dratini

Or Slowpoke

Leave any suggestions. Just because one gets more votes or whatever doesn't mean I'll pick it, but it will be taken into account.

Thanks for reading!
