5 Desperate State

Zordyz was able to cram three years worth of knowledge into his brain in a span of a week. His mother only helped on the difficult terminologies.

All that was left was a little revision and he will be able to put the things he just learned into practical use.

Before long, Milya got to know the reason for her son's sudden change of interest.

She was with Yuenelia's mother; Valerie this morning.

"What's little Yue taking in high school?" Milya asked as she walked to the market with Valerie.

"Yue's taking Magic Cure in Medicine. She has been studying for it for a very long time. In the beginning, she just asked me about basic treatments. But in recent years, she has been asking increasingly difficult questions." Valerie replied.

Valerie is working as a doctor in the ophthalmology department at Hertbane Medical University Hospital. The department is considered one of the most important departments in the magic society. Any abnormalities that can lead to magic-based diseases start from the eyes.

"My son only started last week, buried himself in a huge pile of medical-related books. He's already reading up this year's textbook last night." Milya laughed, showing a picture of Zordyz sleeping on the book pile that she took to Valerie.

"Oh my. Wasn't he crazy about ball sports? There has never been a day I didn't see him running out of the house without a ball in his hands every evening." Valerie laughed along.

"Just when I thought he's set for joining the national team, he showed up one day with all these books. I'm stumped!" Milya said as they walked past the flower shop.

"He can really study and be a top student if he wanted to. He's your son after all." Valerie chuckled.

"Only when he feels like it. All these years of playing around, it's a miracle he didn't fail his tests. Thanks to little Yue, dragging him along during exam season!"

"Yue's always been very bossy when it comes to Zordyz." Valerie nodded in agreement.

"Now I know why he was in such a desperate state."

"Hmm?"

"It was all because he wanted to accompany little Yue!"

"Do you think he's worried about her?"

"Of course! Look at how many admirers little Yue has! He would be worried sick if he left her alone in the class, won't he?"

"He just can't be honest with his own feelings huh? Doing things in such a roundabout way instead of studying together with her." Valerie laughed. "He's so cute!"

"Cute you say? You haven't seen his face when he stared at the books! It's like he wanted to set them on fire!" Milya moaned.

Valerie was having her day off and she usually spends her days off with Mylia. Since they were both medical professionals, they got along really well.

"I'm thinking of going back to work in the hospital." Mylia voiced her thoughts.

"Oh?"

"Do you think your hospital will accept an old lady like me who's been off-service for so long?"

"What are you talking about? What old lady? You're still in your 30s'! We're shorthanded in the O&G Department. You're welcomed to join any day!" Valerie said. "But why now?"

"Zor is already a big boy. He can take care of himself. In fact, he's much more independent than when his dad was his age." Mylia replied, chuckling.

"I can see you're still very much in love with Lloyd. You can never stop talking about him. Nothing beats a pair of childhood sweethearts!" Valerie smiled gently at her.

"Oh, Val! Stop it!" Mylia blushed uncontrollably.

They spent the rest of the day shopping and drinking tea in Valerie's garden.

Meanwhile, at home, Zordyz was still immersed in his books.

The sound of the doorbell broke his concentration.

"Dang! Who is it?" he walked to the door, annoyed.

He looked through the peephole and saw the top part of the visitor's head, but it was enough for him to know who it was.

"Yue? Why are you here?" surprised, he quickly opened the door.

They might have been neighbours for a long time but it was always him who went to her house to play since her compound was bigger.

"Your mum was at my house, she told me you're holed up at home. You haven't had your lunch right?" Yue said, peeking into his house.

"Ah, yeah."

"I brought over some sandwiches. Here!" she pushed a container into his hands. "I'll be going then."

"H-hey, why don't you c-come in?" he stuttered for no apparent reason and it felt super awkward. In his head, he felt like slapping himself repeatedly.

"Hmm?" Yuenelia turned around, not realising his stuttering.

"I said why don't you come in? It's hot outside." this time he made sure to say it properly.

"Aren't you studying? It's rare for you to be like this. I'll only bother you." she hesitated.

"You'll be a big help, come in!" he pulled her in before she can refuse.

As soon as she was in the house, she felt very cold. The temperature in the house was very low.

"Are you in a freezer?" Yuenelia shivered.

"I study better in cold weather, it's less irritating. Hold on." Zordyz said, increasing the air conditioner's temperature and opening the curtains to let in some sunlight.

"Says a person who never studies." she giggled.

"Shut it!"
