8 Chapter 8

"What did you say?!" Marlene screeched. Her eyes held hatred as she stared at her spiritual companion. The tall and graceful figure of a woman was kneeling in front of a beautiful lady. Her blonde hair and green eyes made her pale skin seem as white as a sheet of unused paper. She wore a beautiful pale pink simple dress that seemed to flutter in her anger. The woman kneeling was emotionless as she relayed the message. Sometimes it looked as if she was unwilling to be ruled over by this spoiled princess that acted like a saint to outsiders.

"My lady, lady Kaylen has returned to the island. She is now in the main house with Ethos and the main family."

"After four years that bitch decides to come back. For what?!"

"The rumors are that Master Ethos plans to introduce her as his official granddaughter soon."

"How can a mere orphan fight for what is rightfully mine?! Get out!" Marlene storms out of the room and enters the study of her mother in a mad rush. The maids in the house all roll their eyes.

"Mother! Why is that bitch back. I thought that you said she was never going to come back."

A graceful and tall woman turned to look at her fuming daughter. They seemed to look like sisters instead of mother and daughter with the same complexion and features. Her mother was just a little taller and more serene while her daughter looked immature. The difference were their eyes. Marlene had green eyes while her mother had blue ones.

"Kaylen is back? I didn't think that she would be back unless grandfather requested her to come back." She made her way to her desk and sat. Her spirit companion appeared and whispered in her ear. Her face froze over with the news. "Why did Vincent go to the main house without me?"

"I don't know madam. I just received the news just now. Second master was seen going through the gates just now." Evelin's face frosted over. She knew that she was fit to enter the Draco family but at least her husband should have had the decency to give her some face. Even if he never loved her or touched her again after so many years his aloof and calm façade only every made her angrier that she could never win his heart.

It took her a few moments to settle down before she regained her calm and serene self again. She looked up at her daughter and sighed. "Don't make a fuss. Look at the image you are portraying now. Do you think that no walls have eyes or ears?"

Marlene took deeps breathes to calm herself but her childish eyes still portrayed her rage. After a couple of deep breaths, she looked at her mother and smiled demurely. "What do you think will happen now? Do you think grandfather will uphold the old engagement?"

Her mother looked at her slyly understanding her anger. She had been in love with Theodore Vance for a long time. They just never thought that Ethos would promise Kaylen to them when she was only 10. There must be a reason for adopting a parentless child without any history into their prominent family. "We can't be rash, Marlene. Your grandfather has a reason to do everything. If all he wants is a family connection to the Vance family, then all we can do is ask him. Don't cause a scene and mind your manners. At dinner tonight we can test the waters. Besides, Theodore has been talking to you more often and will be here in a week for a business gathering, take the chances you are given before it is too late."
