What is does it mean to be a hero?

A simple look in the dictionary would tell you it's a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

But what does it actually mean to be a hero?

And what if you don't exactly fit the description...does it mean you are still a hero?

What if you never had a choice and you were forced to be one?

Simply used as a pawn for mere entertainment; someone that could be thrown away at the drop of a hat...

Would you still be there for the people in need?

<<3 days before arrival>>

It was cold, extremely so, on a day when people would normally be outside enjoying the warm weather that summer brings. However, instead of enjoying the beach or playing frisbee outside, people were huddled inside of their houses as the entire world was covered in snow and ice.

The end of the world they called it...

No one saw this freak blizzard coming as it came like a predator pouncing on its unsuspecting prey...

The sudden weather change left billions unprepared for the horrors that would soon take over the world.

Anyone caught outside without the proper protection ended up dying from hypothermia. A process that normally would take twenty to thirty minutes happened in just under five minutes, sometimes even faster.

But that wasn't the worst of it.

Terrifying creatures, unseen by the eyes of man, appeared across the globe. Tall ape-like creatures covered in silvery-white fur and four arms, two on each side. Each of them had glowing blue eyes that could see through just about anything as nothing could escape their sight.

They traveled in large packs, each possessing the strength of several men, no obstacle was too tough for them to break. They could even run almost 30 miles per hour, more than enough to catch their prey if they are on foot.

Humans.

The creatures craved humans.

They devoured human flesh like a child would with sugar. Their four rows of canine teeth ripped through flesh like it was paper, leaving nothing left but a pool of blood on the fresh powdered snow.

These creatures...

No...these monsters quickly caused havoc across the globe making people wonder if this was god's way of punishing them.

But even with these monsters on the loose the real ones still happened to be...human.

"Captain! They are gaining on us!" A man shouted while driving a modified jeep built for rugged terrain. He happened to be speeding through what was once a prosperous city which was now a frozen wasteland.

"Damn it! They only found us because of this idiot!" A man sitting in the passenger seat said while shooting a glare at a teenage boy who was huddled in the corner of the back seat.

The boy frowned, "I'm sorry...I just thought we could save them I-"

"You don't get it do you punk." The man growled, reaching back with his hands, grabbing hold of the boy's shirt and pulling him close.

"Look AROUND! The world we know is dead! It merely took several days, but still, it's DEAD! We can't afford to play hero!!" He shouted, practically throwing the boy back into his seat before turning around.

The captain or Eric happened to be the boy's uncle who took the teenage boy in after his parents died several years ago, raising him like his own son.

The boy had so many good memories with his uncle and he always had a way of leading people as it is how he became the leader of a small group of survivors. The man was strong and capable which set him apart from the pack.

"Sion?.."

"Yes uncle?" the teenage boy answered.

"Do something for me alright?"

Sion turned his eyes on his uncle who seemed to be troubled by something which was obvious as their situation was quite grim because he attempted to save people.

But there was something else bothering the man as one could see as his brown eyes turned cold, colder than the below 0 temperature outside.

"Don't be stupid in the future.." Eric muttered, moving faster than the boy could blink, opening the side door and shoving him out in one fluid motion.

Sion could only look on in horror before being greeted with a chilliness that penetrated his bones as his body slammed against the soft snow.

"U-uncle?.." The boy couldn't comprehend what just happened and almost believed it to be a dream as to how could a man he considered his father to do something so terrible.

Sion looked up to his uncle and even wanted to be like him which is why he wanted to save those people asking for help while they were out on their daily runs to search for supplies.

That same man tossed him out...

He abandoned him to die...

"UNCLLEEEE!" He screamed at the top of his lungs, hoping that the jeep would turn around to pick him up and save him from his impending doom.

But deep down he knew that wasn't the case and the jeep kept on getting further away until he couldn't see it anymore.

"AHHHHH!!" He screamed once again, tears flooding down his face as he stumbled to get up from the snow. "COME BACK-"

His voice was halted just as heard footsteps behind him, a sense of dread came over his body. Sion knew exactly what was standing behind him, hearing the unique sound it made from its mouth. It was almost like a whistling noise that somewhat echoed as if they were in a cave.

It felt like an eternity before the boy decided to accept his fate head-on. The things that went through his head were a bit much for someone his age as he was only sixteen.

He had an entire life ahead of him...

Sion wasn't even able to confess to his crush that happened to be a part of the survivor group his uncle led. He felt so fortunate as he figured after this chaos ended he would ask the girl to go out with him and possibly spend the rest of her life with him.

The poor boy had so many things planned for the future...

But now...

He was staring directly into the eyes of death that were blue in color. Pupil-less eyes that glowed even though it was still technically daytime.

At that moment, Sion felt extremely calm for some reason as memories of his short youth flashed in his mind.

He remembered the first day of school and how tripped down the stairs which resulted in laughter from all the kids around him. However, one person took offense to it and started screaming at them to stop as she helped him off his feet.

He remembered her smile and how she wrapped her arm around his neck while pulling him away to his class which luckily turned out to be hers as well.

He even remembered how he made his first friend during P.E as the guy was cracking corny jokes to which no one laughed at except himself. Sion had always been easily amused and even the corniest of jokes caused him to roar with laughter.

"Erica...Zeke.."

Those were the last words he spoke before he screamed in pain as razor-sharp teeth ripped through his flesh like it was paper, shredding him to pieces.

It would be fortunate for the boy to pass away quickly.

But luck was just not on his side that day...

<2 days before arrival>

It was said that when people die they could end up in several different places depending on their beliefs. Some even said that once you die you just become nothing as if you never existed at all.

Sion was quite conflicted by his beliefs he never quite believed that the gods people were describing were real. He didn't think he would just disappear either as all through his life he had a feeling that there was something more.

"I'm disappointed..."

Sion who thought he was dead heard a voice inside of his head. It was soft and pleasant to listen to and yet it somehow possessed power almost as if it belonged to a divine.

He opened his eyes to complete darkness a void where no light should exist. But just ahead of him he spotted a golden throne and it was glowing.

The golden throne sat upon the darkness as if it was solid matter and just looking at it seemed to hurt his eyes. It was massive and covered with the finest of jewels with no impurities in sight. Sion thought it belonged to a titan of a person, but there floating above the throne was something that looked more like a wisp.

A floating ball of gas the size of a soccer ball that constantly moved from left to right almost in a rhythmic way over the throne.

"Disappointed..in who?" Sion answered, half expecting to be ignored, but he was proved wrong.

"I'm disappointed in the humans I created on this earth...I had thought that I'd create a place without crazy things such as magic or superpowers hoping that the world would be a better place. However, I was wrong..."

Sion had always been fairly smart, he quickly connected the dots and surmised that this was god...or something similar.

"Wait...you-"

"SILENCE!"

"AAAAAGGH!!" immediately after the wisp shouted Sion gripped his head in great pain, feeling it split apart like a migraine but cranked up another level.

However, that pain lasted for but a second as the wisp started to talk again.

"I believed this earth to be my greatest work and yet no one remembers me or calls out my name...I'm the one that created this universe."

*Rumble* The area around him started to tremble almost as if an earthquake found its way here, startling the boy quite a bit.

"...I'M THE ONE THAT BREATHED LIFE INTO THEM! THOSE UNGRATEFUL PEOPLE TORE MY PRECIOUS PLANET APART WITH THEIR GREED AND VIOLENCE. SO MANY INNOCENT LIVES LOST BECAUSE OF THE STUPIDITY OF THE HUMAN RACE!!"

"SO IF THAT IS HOW THEY WILL BE THEN SO BE IT! I'LL BE GREEDY AND I'LL BE VIOLENT!!

I'LL END ALL THEIR MISERABLE LIVES!!" The trembling became even more severe, forcing Sion to his knees as watched the wisp suddenly grow in size.

Growing almost the same size as the throne before it magically morphed into that of a woman. A beautiful woman with long silky green hair that reached past her shoulders and piercing blue eyes that reminded Sion of those monsters causing chaos on his planet.

She was wearing a simple white dress that looked like came from Greek with a golden belt wrapped around her waist. Her skin was a creamy brown without a flaw as if she was made to be perfect from her face all the way down to her exposed dainty feet.

Four massive wings that looked like they belonged to pure white doves graced her back with two on both sides. She even had a crown weaved with vines and an array of different colored roses on top of her head which seemed to enhance her beauty.

Sion didn't know what to think as the god-like being appeared in front of his eyes. He felt as if she was the most beautiful and scariest thing his eyes has ever looked upon in his life.

"But.." The woman sighed, leaning back on her throne as she covered her face with her hand.

"Why do I still love them so... Why does it hurt me so deeply to see them perish by my own hand?..."

Soon after speaking the trembling stopped and Sion could get up from the ground.

If he could call it that...

After hearing those words he immediately thought back to how his uncle looked just before he made the decision to use him as a diversion. However, as he was making the connection he immediately denied it as her situation wasn't the same as his uncles's.

Sion even started to hate the man for what he did and wished he would die in the most horrible of ways.

But then it hit him...

'What about Erica and Zeke? Will they both have to die as well?' He thought while gritting his teeth. Although the boy was dead and shouldn't care about the people he left behind, he still thought of them.

Sion didn't want them to experience the same pain he went through...or worse.

The boy always had a good head on his shoulders and was a bit more mature than his peers due to his past experiences.

And with that in mind, he straightened out his back and walked toward the woman to ask her to stop her goal of ending all life.

"I will not stop it! Especially when it is far too late for me to make changes." The goddess answered as if knowing what he was going to say.

"Then don't! Let me change it! I'll do anything to save them even my bastard of an uncle! Just please let me DO SOMETHING!" Sion screamed, quickly wiping away the tears that threatened to roll down his face. He didn't know where he got the courage to scream at a being who is literally a god, but when he pushed away the hate for his uncle he was left with love.

Love for his crush...

Love for his best friend...

Even love for people who graced his life for only a moment to enrich his life and love for people he may or may not meet in the future.

He wanted to save all of them if he could...

"Hahaha...Hahahahaha!!" The woman began to laugh loudly as if she heard the funniest thing she has ever heard in her entire life. The place even started to tremble again from how loud she was laughing.

"..." Sion stood firm, his face never changing for even a second. He was serious about what he said.

Seeing this, the goddess immediately stopped laughing and stared at the boy that stood before her.

"Is that right?... That's how you really feel?" She asked as an almost creepy smile formed on her face. Suddenly, she snatched Sion up faster than he could blink, bringing him close to her face.

"Is that really how you feel?.." She asked again

"Yes.."

Sion answered, unaware of what he just agreed to.

<1 day before arrival>

If Sion had to use one word to describe the events that took place after he met the goddess then it would be...painful.

She threw him into a variety of trials, trials that nearly pushed him to the brink of insanity. He had to learn how to defend himself and fight with martial arts which forced his body to go through a metamorphosis.

His previously scrawny body was replaced with one that had lean compact muscles, void of nearly all fat.

The boy...no the young man was someone that could pass as a model, especially with his above-average face. He had short curly blonde hair that stopped just behind his ears and emerald green eyes that sat beside his sharp nose.

However, Sion paid no attention to his changes as he was truly focused on these trials. One moment he was running through a maze trying to escape the jaws of a massive lion and the next he was fighting groups of a different martial artists that were conjured up out of nowhere.

He'd fight with the best of his abilities taking down a few of them but each time he fought he would eventually lose. His body was powerful, but his mind couldn't keep up with his body which caused him to make mistakes.

Mistakes that resulted in bruises, broken bones, and countless bleeding wounds all over his body

Normally a person with this kind of damage would die, but it turned out in this goddess's domain...

Death wasn't possible.

And so the young man continued to fight, forgoing his injuries as he fought whoever appeared whether they were small or gigantic. He'd leaped into action without a second thought, filled with hopes of using the skills he learned to save the people he loved.

Currently, he was fighting a giant of a man who used nothing but his body to combat him. At first, Sion was winning throwing punches toward the man's weak points with a ferocity and accuracy that was built up over his time in this domain, but soon things took a turn for the worse.

A normal human would have either died or become seriously injured after the first punch the giant man, however, continued to charge at Sion as if nothing happened.

And then misfortune struck, Sion made a mistake lowering his guard, resulting in the man wrapping him in a devastating bear hug, squeezing him with all his might.

Sion tried his best to break free from his grasp, but then...

*Crack*

"Ahhh!...Grrr.." Sion experienced a variety of different pains, and one would think that after so much time a person should be somewhat immune to pain.

Unfortunately, in this domain, it wasn't possible to get used to any kind of pain. It was as if he was experiencing it for the first time every time he was injured.

Sion thought it was normal as pain is an extremely uncomfortable feeling. However, the goddess knew exactly what was going on with his body as she tampered with it.

A boy suddenly becoming ripped like a professional swimmer?

Impossible!

A boy becoming ripped like a professional swimmer in just a day?

Even more impossible!

This domain...no this entire universe was under her thumb!

She has in absolute control!

Why couldn't she make it impossible for Sion to get used to pain? It was as simple as snapping her fingers.

A cruel ploy, but the goddess was willing to exterminate all life on the planet until he came around.

*Crack Crack*

A few more of his bones snapped, causing him to cry out in pain through his gritted teeth. He struggled with all his might to escape, but the man continued to squeeze him until no breath was left in his lungs.

"Remember what you're fighting for..." The goddess said directly into his mind. "You're going to give all of that up now?"

"N-no...Gah!!!" Another bone snapped like a twig which now resulted in him coughing up blood. Every breath he took was painful, it was as if he was inhaling glass shards.

"I won't..." Suddenly his green eyes flashed with a strange light as a rush of adrenaline filled his body. He could feel a strange power flow through him enabling him with enough strength to force the man's arms apart.

"I WON'T GIVE UP!!" Sion roared, gripping the man's arms using them as leverage while bringing his head back and slamming down against the man's face, immediately breaking the man's nose.

Each person conjured by the goddess was based on real people and so the man couldn't help but cover his now bloodied nose, groaning in pain while staggering back.

Sion then made his move, grabbing hold of the man's massive right arm with both of his hands, holding on as tightly as he could. He then rapidly turned his body using his initial momentum along with his strength to lift and throw a man that was easily four times his size.

His eyes then flashed again as a ferocious roar almost like an animal escaped his lips while he prepared to use a move he made up himself to finish the fight

"Die-"

"That's enough." The goddess interrupted his concentration with her voice and the giant of a man faded away as if he never existed in the first place.

"You've passed your initial trials...I'll grant you something that should allow you to save your planet." The goddess said.

"Hah.." Sion was extremely tired and worn to a point that it was a miracle that he could still stand, but hearing those words gave him strength.

Suddenly a small golden orb of light appeared in front of Sion before it wrapped around his waist like a belt. 'What is this?...' He thought as his body felt warm. It was like he was relaxing in a sauna, melting away all his injuries and exhaustion from his body.

The feeling was quite pleasant causing him to let out a sigh of relief as something else begins to happen. His training clothes that were granted by the goddess started to change as he now wore a stylish hooded black jumpsuit with two white stripes down the front and matching shoes.

However, Sion wasn't focused on the clothes that appeared, but on the strange intricate belt that squeezed his waist. It was black and white just like the jumpsuit he had on with a strange emblem that looked like an 'X' located on the belt buckle. He even noticed that there were several slots and buttons that looked like they were used for something on the belt.

" What is this?" Sion asked, grabbing hold of the belt, surprised by how heavy it seemed.

"The chance to save your loved ones...and also your slave driver..." The goddess smirked.

"Huh?..." Sion looked confused.

"Remember this Sion I'll give you the chance to save your loved ones, but first you'll have to do something for me." She said, standing up from her throne as she walked toward the young man. Her massive body then miraculously began to shrink until she was only several inches taller than the now current 6ft Sion.

Sion frowned, "Do some things? Wait what's going on-"

The goddess pressed her forefinger against Sion's forehead and immediately he passed out while his body started to fade away just like anything she conjured up for his trials.

"Do me this favor and I'll give you the chance to save them...This is your next trial...I wish you luck."

<Day of Arrival>

One moment he was looking at the goddess and the next he was standing on top of a massive building that looked over a busy city.

However, it wasn't busy with people going about their normal lives as there was nothing normal about aliens causing destruction and chaos with their advanced machinery.

"What...is this?.." Sion looked around, trying his best to learn where he was currently. He figured this was another trial, but then...why did the goddess lie to him?

"Hey, lost boy I'm gonna need you to get out of here as you can see we are dealing with a bit of a crisis here. Why are you up here anyway? Do you need help down? I helped quite a few cats after they got caught up in trees-"

Sion pulled out of his thoughts and looked up to see some kind of a metallic man with a mix of gold and red flying in the air. The sleek design of the man caught his eye as it reminded him of a toy robot he used to play with as a kid. He was then drawn to the shining light in the middle of the metallics man's chest as he could sense a great power coming from it.

A sense he developed in his time training in the goddess's domain as he now possessed a sense that was potent enough to sense ghosts, something he wouldn't know till later.

"Hello? Earth to boy band. Don't make me-Hold on with that thought." He said, turning his body around and quickly aimed his hands at incoming aliens on flying vehicles.

Sion didn't know what the man was doing until he heard a high-pitched sound followed by a small explosion as a beam of light came from his palms, instantly destroying the flying vehicles along with the aliens.

"Where am I?..." Sion asked.

"New York City. The greatest...er scratch that." The metallic man stopped himself as the city wasn't in the best shape as of right now.

"New York City?" Sion never heard of such a place in his entire life, but the buildings did look similar to the ones where he used to live.

As he was thinking, suddenly, an almost transparent screen appeared in front of his eyes...and he didn't like it one bit.
