1 The Study Of Self

Planet Earth is a large place, yet at the same time, it is so small. People traveling back and forth to the same place, doing the same thing, every day. Yet, they never question the meaning of life. The world is such a huge place, yet most people stick to a 20-mile radius their whole life.

You might ask, what makes you different from the rest of these people? Now, if you do ask, you obviously missed the title of this novel and the synopsis. I am one of these people. I am that person that travels back and forth every day doing the same thing over and over again and never question the meaning of life. However, I was fine with that. I was fine living leisurely watching the days past by while accomplishing nothing meaningful in my life.

When I was 16, I realized I wasn't meant for greatness. I always feel like heroes are those that stand out, shine, and lead the community. Obviously, I wasn't suited for that job. They say everyone is unique but is that really the truth?

I wanted to find out, thus I did a quick study on myself to compare how different I am from the rest of the world. Let's start talking about my distinct features. I am an Asian, that makes me 1 out of the 4.54 billion Asians in this world. Just like how 60% of the world population are Asians. Let's narrow it down, not only am I an Asian, but I am also Chinese! This narrows me down by a few billion, to 1 in 1.338 billion Chinese. Now only 18% of the world population are similar to me. That means in 100 people, 18 of them could be me.

Now I wish to tell you that me wearing glasses help narrow it down, but apparently more than 60 % of people wear glasses and contacts. The good news for you is that the average height of men is 5 feet 9 or 176 centimeters. I am taller than the average man standing tall at the height of 5 feet 10 or 178 centimeters. I bet you couldn't even tell the difference between 176 centimeters and 178 centimeters.

However, as I was writing about myself, I did start pondering. Is it possible for me to change? Can I become someone unique? Is it possible for redemption? Can I become something I'm not? After 10 seconds of deep self-evaluation, I received my enlightenment. The answer is NO. why? The reason is that this is just an ordinary novel, about an ordinary person, living his ordinary life, writing an ordinary story, for the ordinary you.

So the next time someone tells you, you are special. Most likely you are not. That person is most likely a liar. Like all of us. Thus, stop trying to stand out. Conform to society, fit in, be one of us. Be us.

sincerely,

the ordinary man
