4 Chapter 4

"October, Yes, it was in October 1985 that I joined the police force"

"For the first 9 years, I always wore the uniform...and noted down First information reports in the police station. The gun remained silent, in my hoister. In 1994, I was transferred to the DSC...I took off the uniform and my gun started speaking up."

-An Excerpt from the interview given by Kaine to the Local Newspaper

"I agree, you have a nice Collection. But your party's asking for a lot of money, this I can't agree to."

Razor was saying to Zaman while sipping his beer.

"Just give him a bit of the advance, Razor," said Zaman as he looked towards Razor.

Razor coughed a little and replied, "That I will, talk it over with him. I'll come and sign the papers tomorrow if he wishes." Razor heard some footsteps from behind and felt a cold sensation on the back of his neck.

"Nothing's happening, relax." Kaine took the gun away from his neck and placed it on the table.

"I thought you were about to bump me off," Razor gulped his saliva. "Sir, are you here to bump me off?"

"If I wanted to do that, I'd have done it by now," Kaine took the beer in front of Razor and began to drink. "You've been called over. For interrogation." He took some roasted cashews from a plate and threw them inside his mouth. He then turned towards Franzes. "Wanna eat some?"

"I'm smoking, it'll destroy the flavor." Franzes replied while puffing out the smoke.

"When did you come to the state?" Kaine asked Razor.

"Two days ago," Razor also took some cashews and ate them. "Why has the chief called me?" Razor asked and looked at Kaine for an answer.

Kaine took a deep breath "How would I know?" He smiled and continued "As if he'll tell me what business he has with you. He asked me to bring you along, so I'm doing that. I do what my seniors tell me to do."

His eyes turned to the buzzing phone - the chief was calling. He pressed the green button.

"Yes, sir...?"

"We'll be there in a couple of hours,"

"Yes, sir... I've stopped near a park for a cup of tea."

"Very well, sir." he disconnected the call and looked at Franzes and coughed a little. Franzes took out his gun and began to load bullets.

"Your wife's away at her mother's, so you can have all the fun, right?" Kaine ate some more cashews and asked Razor.

"Oh come on, sir." Razor chuckled.

"You have a girlfriend, don't you?" Kaine said again.

"No, sir," he replied with a smirk on his face.

"Really?....Who's the one in the red light district?...Tell me..." Kaine gave him a serious look.

Razor answered, hesitating a little. "Sir...i have two of them there. First class items."

Bang!

Franzes pulled the trigger. The bullet went right through Razors brain, leaving a hole.

"Write down a report that we fired in self defense," Kaine said to Franzes.

On the National Highway this afternoon...in a shootout between the DSC and the underworld...the dreaded gangster Razor Solem was killed.

The DSC department was on the lookout for Razor for a long time. Razor Solem was accused of four murders...apart from the killing of officer Jacob. It is reported that Razor Solem worked for underworld crime syndicate GUNS.

The DSC wanted to arrest Razor...but he opened fire and the DSC had to respond with retaliatory firing. In the last two months, this is the fifth time that...Officer Kaine has targeted members of the GUNS.

Kaine washed his hands and sat down on his table. He then began to look through the files kept on it.

"That's the fiftieth victim, sir," said his immediate junior, Officer Dolton..

"I don't keep count," Kaine replied without giving it much thought.

Dolton spoke again, "Why didn't you involve me in the operation, sir?"

Kaine stopped and looked at him. "Who's responsible here in my absence?"

"I ...sir"

"So..." Kaine was still looking at him with a calm gaze.

"Nothing, sir." Dolton wiped the sweat on his forehead.

"Hey Franzes...Razor's sister lives somewhere in slum. Make sure you inform her," he spoke to Dolton again "Give me a cigarette, will you?"

"Quaske, he's coming to state sir." Dolton said cautiously while giving Kaine a cigarette.

Kaine took the cigarette and lit it with a match, "When?" he asked Dolton.

"At seven, sir."

Kaine took a shot and said while puffing the smoke, "Which asshole informed you?"

Dolton said with a shaky voice "No... It's confirmed news, may I go...sir?"

Kaine took a long glance at the bloodstain on his own shirt which was there after shooting a guy of some random gang. He said calmly "Go, if you wish to waste your time."

Dolton gulped. "Why, sir?"

"I have received word that Quaske's in the south right now," replied Kaine.

"Maybe your information is wrong and mine is right, sir." Dolton said again.

Kaine shook his head helplessly. "Has that ever happened before? You needn't go anywhere. Follow up on the earlier cases, go on." He waved his hand.

Dolton stood up and walked towards Franzes and spoke in a low voice "There's just one man who works here. I come here only to say hi, there's little I can do but why do you accompany him?"

Franzes said to him directly, "Now look, I don't want to get into this mess between you and him. I just want to go home, watch TV, watch my wife..have a little fuck with her...and go to sleep. I'm not fond of seeing my photo in the news...and raising the count. You guys can do all that."

Kaine took a file and threw it towards Dolton. "This case of Deadfall, follow it up, take a few guys with you. Hey Narry... you are going with him."

He looked at Narry, who was looking a little sleepy.

"Tired?"

"No, sir," Narry replied and stood up. he turned to Dolton. "Let's go."

Kaine's phone buzzed, and he pressed the green button.

Donnie, who was on the other side, was shouting "Dickhead.... I'll make an eunuch out of you. Cut this bloody drama, stop killing my people."

Donnie was the leader of GUNS crime syndicate.

"What do you think? Will I stop it if you tell me to?" Kaine chuckled.

Donnie spoke while breathing heavily, "I know...at whose behest you're finishing off my gang. You're Falcon's pimp."

"What...? High already? What sort of an asshole are you?" Kaine said with a smile.

"Now listen, I'll pay you double the amount Falcon's paying you, but stop killing my people."

He paused for a second and then continued, "Else, I won't let you live in this state!"

Kaine's voice turned ugly. "You're sitting with your tail between your legs and you're threatening me? You're going to throw me out of this state? You have the balls to do that? Hey Donnie... you mustn't have a gang of more than few guys and I have a gang of 40,000 cops. You won't even know when you're bumped off. And what did you say? I'm Falcon's pimp? I've killed 16 of his men. That's the way it is, okay?"

There was a moment of silence. Donnie, on the other end, seemed to have realized something. "Hot headed guy, are you?" he said with a grin. "I'll plant RDX under the chair you're sitting and blow you up!"

"How many guys have you personally killed till today? Tell me Two, five, ten...? I've bumped off more than 50 already. You get that...? Catch a plane and come over. I'll bump you off at the airport! Why sit there and talk to me like a bloody eunuch?" Kaine said while switching on the television.

"Why must you dirty your hands?" Donnie spoke with some restraint this time.

"Dirty my hands? The government pays me to use the gun and when I bump off guys like you, I get a medal. No blood on my hands. And you know what...?" the sarcasm in his voice was clearly visible "You're the shit of society and I'm the janitor. The job's not very pleasant, but one has to do it."

"What you say is right, Sir Kaine." The voice from the other side spoke.

"Sir...? I was a pimp a little while ago, now I've become sir?" Kaine replied.

"There are not many people I address as 'sir'."

"Let's skip the bullshit..." Kaine ignored the fake respect Donnie was showing.

"Oh come on, Kaine. You must think of me too..."

"Think what? Stop playing a gangster and I will stop firing my gun. Why are you wasting my time? Mine isn't for illegal things like yours is, and my time is precious, okay? Now fuck off."

"Very well, Sir...the play is about to begin...are you watching it?" Donnie said with a somewhat ugly face.

Kaine again responded with an insult, "I have a live play going with your members."

"All right, sir. I'll phone you later." Donnie said, hoping to hear some positive words from Kaine.

"Phone me or not, I don't give an elephant's ass." Kaine pressed the red button.

"Bastard!" Donnie hurled the phone at the television. The newscaster droned on, unaware of the gang leader's impotent rage, and moved onto the next news report. Something about a failed coup in the Second Kingdom, and how the Third Kingdom had a hand in it. Fortunately for the former, they had arrested the rebels responsible and executed them along with their families as an ominous warning to future perpetrators. Donnie ignored the anchorman, his angry thoughts currently preoccupied elsewhere.

"What did he say?" His wife asked.

"What could he say? What could he say to me? Fucking DSC dickhead!" Frustrated, he turned to his wife and buried his face in her breasts. Sighing at the soft sensation enveloping his face, he tried to forget about Kaine and all the troubles, at least for this one night.
