Chapter 2: It really be the apocalypse

Noon , Apartment building

Atkinson woke up with no nightmares but he was slightly tired because he slept on an empty stomach.

He cleaned himself up and finished a simple breakfast with high sugar volume from the snack bar.

Looking outside, there was actually a protest going on, hundreds of slow walking zombies huddled together moving towards no particular destination.

Atkinson was intrigued, it seems that the zombies might be infected with some kind of virus and liked to protest in large groups. Almost like a moving nest.

He decided to record these observations for future reference.

Afterwards, he washed his sweater and metal bat and left it out on the balcony to dry off.

Let's see if there is still wifi. Maybe I can download a few movies or books for when I'm bored.

Luckily, the internet still existed at the moment. He quickly downloads several survival shows and books.

Although the internet does seem to be slower than before, which he expected.

From his books, finding a reliable and strong survival group is necessary in a zombie apocalypse. Mainly so the person won't be riddled with mental problems from being too lonely for too long.

He was a psychopath not anti-social after all.

He tried turning the television on to see if it still worked. It actually turned on, except the only show was a black screen with coordinates, directions and a map to a safe haven in the town next to the city

Actually, he wasn't a native to this city, he was fired from his last position as a mental health therapist. So he took a picture of the map with his phone.

After stuffing his backpack full of snacks from the snack bar, he wrapped his arms with thick towels from the bathroom.

This way he can safely use his arms to hold off a bite in dire situations. As for other body parts, there weren't enough towels and it would hinder movement too much.

As soon as he went outside, there was someone greeting him. It was a dead zombie on the door stop. A nice doormat suited for the apocalypse.

Actually it was a perfect opportunity to test his new idea. Maybe the zombies huddle together because they share the same pheromones like cells signaling in a positive feedback loop.

He was very smart and perceptive. Simple analogies to micro-biology was nothing to him.

He took a towel from his left arm because he's a righty. Dipped it carefully in the open carcass and slathered it all over his clean sweater. Thinking about it now, it was completely useless to have washed the sweater.

No matter, sometimes being clean creates a clean state of mind. Especially in a zombie apocalypse.

Looking at the map, there were a few supermarkets, a mall, some office buildings, a bank, more office buildings and a housing district. Currently he is in the housing district.

It wasn't the entire map of the city, but it was enough to get to the military camp.

The city wasn't in ruins as one would expect in any apocalypse, although it will definitely be if the government is still around to decimate this place.

Luckily for Atkinson, the government was flustered at the moment, struggling to maintain its influence and structure.

He walked for about a mile before seeing the supermarket. He was kind of excited to start looting and murdering… murdering zombies of course.

He didn't want to loot random apartments and houses since they might be filled with more strangers and zombies than he wanted to be with.

Supermarkets are the ideal place anyone wants to be in at the beginning of a zombie apocalypse. Stock Full of food and essential supplies like clothes, tools, and gas if it is a gas station.

The doors were broken and almost detached from the door frame. Seems like there were a group of people who have looted this place already.

Although there weren't any zombies, he still forced himself to be vigilant as much as he could.

Sure enough, as he walked in, there were only a few shelves full. No one took any cleaning supplies or construction tools.

The supermarket was called "Joel's Supermarket" but was actually just a small local shop with essential home supplies.

The real supermarket like EverMart chain markets were the real deal. However, a small shop will suffice.

He didn't search for long before he found some hiking gear and backpacks, so he replaced his work bag and stuffed the new bag with Jerkys and bottled waters while leaving some candy inside.

He didn't search for long until he found not exactly what he needed but was better than his metal bat, a pneumatic nail gun and some CO2 gas canisters.

He spent a few minutes putting together those two items and amazingly he made a nail gun capable of penetrating the skull at extremely close range.

It wasn't heavy so he found a belt and clipped it to his hip like a handgun. Feeling more secure, he felt excited for this achievement.

From the apartment to the supermarket, it took him roughly an hour taking detours from large groups of zombies and hiding in alleyways.

There was also a bicycle for sale, the owner must be a saint for it to be 100% off at a time like this. He took the bicycle with the lock and left in a good mood.

With a bicycle getting anywhere is fast and easy since no one would dare be driving a car as it attracts too much attention.

Biking quietly in the middle of the road, it felt extremely surreal now after all the action died down.

This only lasted for a few minutes before he saw a group of people on a truck trying to shoot down a crowd of zombies.

Although he wanted to help them, it seems that they are attracting some very strong zombies that had weird green and purple fungus growing on them.

It protruded their eye sockets and split their head open. Must be an evolved form of the standard zombie he fought yesterday.

He could hear the loud shouts and bullets from a distance. It was quite satisfying seeing the zombies fall in succession. Abiet the strong looking ones.

"Carl! Use your power now! We're going to run out of bullets!" shouted a tall man welding a heavy duty chainsaw.

"ON IT!" replied back another man. This man grabbed a large car battery in one hand and stretched his other hand towards the increasing amounts of zombies joining the crowd.

A loud electrical moan, then a loud zap, finally a low hissing sound was produced.

"WOAH! Carl, everytime you use this power it still shocks me hahaha," the tall man was filled with glee as he laughed excitedly.

The electric man simply hummed and jumped down to inspect the zombies. He also held a small handgun.

He rummaged through zombies trying to find something but seemed to be disappointed.

With a pained face, "Sorry guys, doesn't seem to be any of those orbs in these bodies"

The other 5 people looked downcast and started to pack up their things. Just when the electric man was about to hop onto the truck, he turned around and looked straight at Atkinson's direction.
