Another Day

My ears were ringing, my legs shaking and struggling to support me. The urge to cough came, what came out was blood. The artillery shell had struck far enough to not kill me, but close enough for the shockwave to screw up my insides. Just a few moments ago, three of my squadmates were with me, but now they're all gone. What's left of them were chunks of flesh and a blackened crater. My ears were slowly recovering, but not enough to hear the dozens of bullets whizzing by. I saw dust jumps up in front of me, I stood there still, watching as the grains slowly settles down only for more to jump up.

I felt a pull from behind my back, being unstable from the blast, it was able to yank me into a trench. I could see another person approaching me. The one that had pulled me down jumped out of the trench and dashed towards a wall. Someone pulls my face away, a flashlight flashes between my eyes. A sound of a rocket could be heard, "RPG get down!" someone shouted right before a storm of dust and debris pushes through like runaway water. The dust and soil covered me once again. The person that had been checking up on me lay motionless under the debris. I pull myself up only for the ground the shake as successive mortar rounds strike and explodes with deafening roars around me.

I climbed out of the trench and walks towards a yellow brick house. The door was gone, there were multiple bullet holes visible on the wall. The people inside began shouting at me. I continue walking towards them, breaking into a dash when a mortar round exploded behind me, nearly knocking me down. As I reached the house, the machine gunner began to fire again in bursts. Someone approached me and sat me down.

"Hey. Hey! Are you ok?" a female voice shouted at me, "he's not shot, probably just shell shocked."

"Hey man, I'm going to bring you to the back ok?" a different voice spoke up, male this time, "the effect will only last for a few minutes."

"Damn it! How were they able to fortify the hills so damn fast?" the female said, "where're our damn gunships?!"

"We got Bones coming!" a guy shouted, I assume he's the radio operator, "we got birds on their way for evac!"

You could hear the multiple sighs of relief, it seems that there were quite a few people in this house. The sound of a tank could be heard as it roars down the road and towards our position. It's 120 mm gun pointed at the direction on the hills and fired. Like a signal, multiple mortars can be heard launching deadly 120mm rounds towards the hills. Spectacular columns of smoke shoots into the sky. Another salvo fires, then another, and another, with each every salvo, cheers could be heard. The machine gunner began shooting in high spirits. All the troops shouted cheers of victory.

"There they are!" someone shouted, pointing towards the sky, "the Bones has arrived!"

A squadron of B-1 Lancers can be seen flying across the sky, the sun rays gleaming off their wings. Contrails stretch across the sky as they approach the hills, distant thunder can be heard as 500 lb bombs explode one by one. Boom. Boom. Boom-boom. Boom. They echoed. The cheering was relentless, arms were flailing in the air. The enemy has been annihilated.

The distant sounds of helicopter blades can be heard. We made it.
