I returned home, physically and emotionally drained from my month-long stay in Miami. My parents and sister, Sara, were nowhere to be found when I arrived on this Friday night. It was a strange homecoming. I had just taken a taxi from the airport, wondering why no one had bothered to pick me hup.

They’d sent me to Miami under the pretense of a summer school program, with the goal of molding me into the perfect housewife. Yet, I had no intention of getting married anytime soon, and the absurdity of the situation lingered in my mind.

Fatigued and disheartened, I trudged upstairs, dropping my bags unceremoniously on the floor. I was too exhausted to even think about unpacking. Instead, I stripped out of my travel-worn clothes and took a long, soothing shower.

It was hard to fathom that I had been away for a whole month, and no one had made the effort to welcome me home. The resentment surged within me. I had to resort to taking a taxi, an inconvenience that only intensified my feelings of abandonment.

I could hear voices from downstairs, which piqued my curiosity. Wrapped in my red lace nightdress, I descended the staircase and nearly collided with someone, sending me teetering backward. Fortunately, the person’s swift reflexes saved me from falling, and I found myself gazing into the most enchanting pair of eyes I had ever seen. One eye was as blue as the sea, while the other was a deep, rich chocolate brown.

I stumbled to my feet, thanked the stranger, and tried my hardest not to let my gaze linger on his impeccably styled black hair. Collecting myself, I proceeded into the dining room, where a woman and a man were engaged in animated conversation. The sight left me bewildered and at a loss for words.

Laughter echoed through the room, and as I turned, someone embraced me from behind. I spun around and found Sara, my big sister, wearing an unusually warm and welcoming smile. “Omg, Julie, you look wonderful,” she exclaimed, pulling me into a warm hug before taking a seat next to the man who had saved me.

Sara and I had never been close, so her unusual enthusiasm in front of these strangers struck me as odd. It seemed like something had changed drastically during my absence, and I was about to find out how much.

My parents entered the room, showering me with hugs and kisses. They apologized for not being able to pick me up from the airport, an apology that felt hollow given the situation. They introduced me to Mr. and Mrs. Blackwood, and their son, Alexander, who insisted that I address him as Alex.

As my mother began to explain why they were all gathered, my world suddenly shattered. “Well, sweetheart, things have changed while you were in Miami. Your sisters will soon be getting married to Alex. Isn’t that great?”

I choked on my drink, earning puzzled looks from everyone. “I never thought she’d be the type to settle down,” I muttered under my breath, earning a sharp glare from Sara.

My mother inquired, “Why is that, Julie?”

I decided it was time to reveal some uncomfortable truths. “I mean, I thought she was dating Mark after sleeping with him less than a month ago.”

Sara’s eyes widened in shock. “What the hell are you talking about?”

With determination, I continued, exposing her secrets. “So, you thought I wouldn’t find out, Sara, that you slept with my boyfriend in my room? You’re a… you know what? I’ll never forgive you for that.”

“Julie, I’m really sorry. I didn’t know you guys were dating.”

“Shut up, you know what you are! It’s not the first time you’ve done that. Don’t go cheating on your fiancé now, that is, if you haven’t already.”

Sara’s patience had worn thin, and she slapped me, hard. “Don’t you ever say that to me again, you hear me?”

I tried to leave, but my dad stopped me. “We still have to discuss your sister’s wedding and your role as her maid of honor. It would be great to know what your role would be in this wedding.”

I looked from my mother to Sara, who wore a fake smile. I turned back to my mother and shook my head, my cheeks still stinging from the slap. “I’m sorry, Mom, I can’t do this. I can’t be her maid of honor, given what she’s put me through.”

My mother insisted, “Come on, Julie; she’s your big sister.”

Frustration and bitterness surged within me. “You know what, Mom? Why don’t you be her maid of honor? She’s always been your favorite, anyway. You’ve always chosen her over me, so you should just leave me alone.”

With that, I left the room, heading to the balcony for some fresh air. The tears flowed, and it felt like the whole world was against me. After sitting there for a while, my cheeks still ached, so I decided to go to the kitchen to get some ice.

As I moved through the house, I could hear the sounds of laughter and merriment from the dining room. It was clear that I was the topic of conversation, but I didn’t want to add fuel to the fire by confronting them. I retreated to my room, put on some music, and tried to forget the chaotic scene below.

I undressed, leaving only a sports bra and underwear, and lay on top of my bed, illuminated only by the soft glow of a bedside lamp. The warmth in the room made it impossible to stay under the covers, so I listened to music and played a game on my phone to distract myself.

Suddenly, my door swung open. Anger boiled within me, and I couldn’t hide my irritation. “What the heck? Can’t you knock? The door is there for a reason, you jerk.”

I scrambled to pull the covers over myself, but it was too late. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to intrude. Your mom thought it would be a good idea if I came and had a word with you.”

As my heart raced, the person took a few steps closer, and I recognized him as Alex, my sister’s fiancé. I was stunned that it was him of all people. I cleared my throat and spoke, “Well, maybe you should go tell her this was a bad idea because I don’t really feel like talking tonight.”

Alex calmly sat down on my bed. “You know, you don’t have to cover yourself; I’ve already seen you in nothing but some Calvin Klein underwear and a bra.”

Heat surged to my cheeks, and I quickly pulled the covers up to hide my face. Alex chuckled and pulled them down. “So, tell me the reason you’re trying to hide away from me.”

“I-I’m not hiding from anyone.”

“Oh, really? Then why are you covering your face?”

“Look, what I do and why I do it is none of your business. I thought you came here to talk, so say what you want and get out of my room.”

“Okay, princess, I will.”

“Don’t call me that. I’m not your fiancé.
