20 A Dear Death

The atmosphere in Maddison's room was heavy. Dennis was holding her hand and Daniel was standing in front of her. He was about to tell her the terrible news. At this short moment, he regretted becoming a doctor. He knew that this was the hardest part in his job. This time it was harder for him as he considered Maddison as family.

He gathered his confidence and started talking.

"Maddison, your body is rejecting your heart. If this continued it may lead to heart failure. I will try my best not to let that happen. We will start your medication and we hope it will work. " Daniel told her the first outcome. Everyone in this room knew that the first outcome wouldn't happen as there are signs of that.

" what if it doesn't work.??!!" Maddison asked Daniel.

" we will put you back on the transplant list for another heart transplant. We will try every way possible to make your current heart work till we find you a new one. " Daniel answered her question. He wasnt afraid of her acquiring a new heart as her case was worsening so she would be put on the transplant list but what what made him worry was her losing her will to live.

"I have been taking the medication for a while and it hadn't worked Daniel"

" we will give you a stronger dosage. It will be more painful but it could work and I am the best." Daniel looked at Maddison's warm face. He felt as if she expected this.

" Daniel I want to ask you a favour."

"Anything maddie"

"I want to sign a DNR" Those words made the room more heavier. Daniel and Dennis expected this but it made Daniel irritated and mostly scared.

He didn't want to lose another family member. He never thought that he would hate being a doctor but at that moment he despised it.

" how!! Why?! Maddison, I am the best. I can still give you more time. Don't you believe in me" Daniel said those words while holding the hand. He looked like a madman who was holding onto his life. Maddison saw his state and tried to calm him down.

" my dear Daniel, I have lived a fulfilling life. Why should I waste a heart who can go to a girl in her twenties or a man who has a family. "

"Do it for me maddie please." Daniel begged her.

"Dan, my daughter is dead. I want to join her. I believe this is my time to go.... Dennis please prepare the papers. I will go when this heart stops. Both of you please stay with me in my last moments." Maddison looked at Daniel and gave him a smile. It was a face thanking him for giving her more life and for giving her this heart.

"Daniel, you gave me this heart and time to see my daughter off. Now I don't need anything else from you or from this heart. I knew for a while that it was time so please let me go with a smile on your face. I do t want to have any regrets before I go so please let me go with a thoughtful smile. I always considered you as my grandson and I am proud to have known you. Please live a good and fulfilling life"

Daniel nodded with a face that barely contained his tears.

It took her two weeks to reach her end. It was the end that she wanted.

she was on the hospital bed with Dennis and Daniel on both sides holding her hands. The monitor started to beep and the two miracle doctors knew it was time. Daniel muted the monitor and put his head on maddie's heart. He was crying. He couldn't handle himself. Maddison's clothes were wet with tears. It was Daniel's. He clenched her clothes and continued crying.

It was a heartbreaking sight. If a stranger saw this scene, he would have thought she was his true grandmother. Dennis was the most one to get hurt by this sight. Even though they were friends for a long time, he never saw his friend acting that way. It was heartbreaking.

It was time to send Maddison's body to the morgue. Daniel couldn't let go of her body. It felt as if he couldn't believe that she died. Dennis resorted to force to try to make Daniel get away from Maddison's body. He hit him hard and pushed him to the wall. He kept holding him till the people took the body to the morgue. Dennis let him go and Daniel went to the doctor's lounge and locked the door. He started breaking everything around him in the room

The only thing that Dennis could do was to stand and look at the locked door. He couldn't handle the sound of things breaking so he decided to get help. He went to Sera. Dennis hoped that she would be able to help. She was his only hope of getting his friend back.
