A single mindless demon only offered only a measly 2 rings when killed, therefore Vlad should've had plenty of rings because of the eradication project.

He could have used the rings Vlad earned but he wanted to calculate the exact amount of rings it would have to take to prolong Vlad's life. This was so to tell how much Vlad's life cost, and to charge him for it.

Damian wasn't a charity. With Vlad's might in eradicating the mindless demons, Damian considered him a jackpot.
