Chapter 001: One Wish

Damian Cross just returned to his apartment from the graveyard.

Today was supposed to be her birthday. He cleared his scheduled and left work early to deliver flowers to her grave.

He did that every year on that particular day since she died and had never missed a day.

His clothes were soaking wet since he didn't bother using an umbrella.

Thud!

He fell on his bed, then faced up after a few minutes.

...Sigh, why has it always been like this?

Damian lived an uneventful life, and he was already used to it. He always felt like he was in an abyss. The sadness he felt on this particular day wasn't like anything he had ever felt.

Damian raised his hands and adjusted his glasses. He had black hair and fair skin, a slim handsome man in his twenties.

He was an orphan who got picked up when he was 9 years old by a family that lived in the countryside in Texas.

He could have possibly been picked up at a younger age, but people were afraid of how he looked.

He got bullied by the other orphans and in middle school because of it, to the extent he hated everything around him and his existence.

At that time, he had dark blue hair and greyish-looking skin. He was seen as a demon by everyone.

The older he grew, the darker his hair became and the lighter his skin.

Damian's foster parents loved him like he was their biological son and he never ceased to impress them.

Over the years, He became less and less attracted to the fancies of men his age. It was like the more human he looked, the less human he felt. It got to the point that he always wore an apathetic look on his face and showed no single facial expression.

At 23 years old, he graduated with a first-class degree in Neurosurgery. Such a genius could only be seen once in a decade.

He got a job the same year. Due to his outstanding performance and skill, he was promoted to Assistant Director in the first few months of his job, then promoted to Director a year after.

He was already a millionaire before he graduated, but there was nothing he wanted money for apart from the basic needs of life.

No desires, no hopes, no dreams. Damian was just an empty body with no soul nor drive.

The only thing he felt slightly elevated in doing is creating discord.

He used social media as his playground. He hacked celebrities' accounts and caused major problems that stormed the headlines for days.

He did this not because he just wanted to ruin someone's name, all he wanted was to feel an emotion, any emotion.

He had been pressured with the fact that he isn't human since a very young age, but he withstood it saying they were just spouting nonsense. But now, he 'feels' the difference between him and normal people he can't just help but think he was wrong.

Tung!

He heard a notification sound from his phone that brought him out of this reverie. He carried it to see the contents of the notification.

– @TheGingerbreadFriend: Whatsup bro?

...This dude again...

About six months back, when Damian had just successfully caused a problem between two celebrities, he received a message.

– @TheGingerbreadFriend: I know it's you that's causing all those problems.

Damian sprang up from his seat, not due to fear of being caught, but he was surprised someone found out it was him although he buried his tracks perfectly.

But of course, he couldn't just accept defeat that easily.

– @damianCross: What!? Who are you? And what are you talking about?

– @TheGingerbreadFriend: Stop playing dumb. I have evidence.

– Don't worry I won't do anything to you.

– I just want us to be friends (•‿•).

Damian was perplexed for a moment, but he agreed since the person didn't call anything else apart from friendship, so it was fine.

They chatted almost every day after Damian came from work. He noticed the unknown user was always active immediately he entered the social-media app.

Damian only chatted with the unknown user because he hoped to find out how he found out Damian was behind everything.

In the period they chatted, they shared their life experiences, but it was mainly one-sided since Damian was the one telling.

He chose his words wisely, so he wouldn't give the unknown user more information on him.

The profile of the unknown user was empty, only the cover photo of a smiley face emoticon with sharp teeth. When Damian searched on the location of the anonymous user using his hacking skills he came to a dead-end since the result showed was the location of Damian's apartment.

Damian felt it was weird by then, but he just wavered it.

On the bed, he just looked at his phone screen, staring at the message from TheGingerbreadFriend.

– @damianCross: what do you want?

– Today isn't the right day, so please don't disturb me.

After he sent the messages, he put his phone down, not expecting to get a reply.

Tung!

Damian carried his phone to lay more emphasis that he didn't want to chat.

– @TheGingerbreadFriend: Urgh, are you sad?

– Ok! Let me help you make your day brighter.

Damian thought for a second before replying.

– @damianCross: How?

There was a moment of suspense that had an eerie feeling to it.

– @TheGingerbreadFriend: I will grant you one wish (^_^).

...What the?! Damian wanted to just switch off his phone but as soon as he wanted to a thought hit him.

...What would I possibly wish for?

He pondered on that thought for minutes until he came to his conclusion.

A man that has no interest in the things of the world. What could be his only wish?

All he wanted was to be happy, together with his foster parents and her. And that all summed up to one thing – Home.

Damian knew TheGingerbreadFriend couldn't grant his wish, but he just decided to tell him since he is one of the few friends Damian had.

– @damianCross: Bring me home.

Nothing happened. Damian let out a soft laugh.

...It's not like I expected it anyway...

Damian got up from the bed then walked to his wardrobe to try to change his clothes but was stopped because of the repeated notification sound from his phone.

He went to the bed and carried his phone to see the contents of the notifications.

– @TheGingerbreadFriend: Ha!

– Ha!

– Ha!

– Ha!

– Ha!

– Ha!

– Ha!

– Ha!

– Ha!

– Ha!

– Ha!

– Ha!

...What is all this?!

Damian swiped down some more but was still met with the same message.

Tung!

– @TheGingerbreadFriend: Out of all the sets of words you could have chosen.

– Hahahahahahahahahaha.

Damian was starting to feel something wasn't right, so he sent a message back.

– @damianCross: What is all this?

Boom!

Before he could press the send button an explosion occurred about a few kilometers away from his apartment that shattered the glass windows and sent him flying.

Damian could only hear a ringing sound in his ear as the whole world was spinning in his eyes, and as he tried to stand up and regain his balance.

"What's… happening…?"

Damian staggered as he moved to the windows of where the blast came from.

He heard screams and shouts, but the ringing sound was louder than all the other sounds.

Through the window, he saw a crashed airplane just a few kilometers away from the window.

Everywhere was covered in fire and smoke, people running haphazardly.

Damian slowly regained his sight and looked closer at the cockpit of the plane. He saw something with horns coming out from it.

He tried to look closer to inspect, but he suddenly heard a woman scream.

"What are those things?!"

He couldn't see the woman, so he scanned the area, looking for what she was talking about.

Damian looked up to the sky, and low and behold, large red circular portals filled the sky with varying sizes.

Creatures with two horns protruding from their forehead and black wings flew out of the portals.

'Disaster...'

That was the only thing that crossed Damian's mind at that moment.

Tung!

Damian, who was still holding his phone slowly raised it to see the message.

– @TheGingerbreadFriend: I told you I'll brighten up your day.

– Welcome to Hell… son of the most malevolent one.
