"The one that was cut in half?" said Kyle. "I honestly didn't even think about taking it with us when we were allowed to leave. They had already taken everything important out of my pockets."

"What about the other clothes you were wearing, your shirt, your pants… still have those?"

"Yeah, we bagged up the bloody shirt afterwards," said Kyle.

"We'll want to see that as soon as we can," said Vargas. "But go on…"

Kyle described how Sergei reacted to hearing that the police had Jones—before he found out all they had was his dead body—how he talked about potential lawyers to defend Jones. Vargas seemed less surprised than Andrea had been about Matthew Jackson. Perhaps he had a different reputation among the police than he did among lawyers.

But Vargas was most interested when Kyle told him Yegor had mentioned Walker…
