The originals prepared for the evening. Kol admired himself in the mirror.

Kol, with a playful smirk, teased, "Rebekah, tell me how handsome I am."

Rebekah, with a smirk, reminded, "Ah, Kol, you know I can't be compelled."

Finn observed with a smile as Klaus, clearly irritated, entered.

Klaus, furious, confronted, "You went after Elena? What is wrong with you?"

Rebekah, with a knowing expression, remarked, "Here we go."

Klaus, with a threatening tone, warned, "Do you want another dagger in your heart?"

Kol, with a smirk, taunted, "Again with the dagger threats? Don't you have any other tricks?"

Klaus glared at Kol.

Klaus dismissed him, "Oh, go back to staring at yourself."

Kol, with a hint of rebellion, retorted, "And who are you, my father?"

Klaus asserted, "No, Kol, but you're in my house."

Kol, challenging, suggested, "Then perhaps we should go outside."

Klaus agreed, "Maybe you should."

Kol, defiant, pointed out, "Oh, finally your patience is finished, huh? I'll give you a piece of advice, Nik. Do not threaten me or Bekah with a dagger."

Esther makes her entrance.

Esther commands, "Enough! Niklaus, come."

Klaus joins Esther, and they disappear into another room.

Klaus, frustrated, declared, "Rebekah wasn't even out of her box a day before she tried to ruin my life. What happened to peace, acceptance, family?"

Esther pointed out, "You put daggers in their hearts. You want them to go down on their knees and kiss your feet for reuniting them?"

Klaus, defending himself, argued, "So it's a crime to want our family to be as we were?"

Esther affirmed "You need to give it time, Niklaus. I've had a thousand years on the other side to be angry and to heal. I'm here to make sure this family does the same"

She continued "It's been my dream for a thousand years that this family could be as one. Forgiveness is not a chore. It's a gift. Now, who are you bringing to the ball this evening?"

Klaus, smirking "Don't be ridiculous. You're lucky I'm even going. Perhaps a charming companion will lighten the evening."

Esther said "Well, I wish you would reconsider. It's going to be a magical evening, and company could make it even more enchanting."

[Gilbert's House]

Elena: If Esther wants to talk to me, maybe I should find out why.

Damon: Well, that's a dumb idea. She already tried to kill you once.

Stefan: No, Elena's right. Bonnie was led to open that coffin for a reason. I think there's more to this than just some family reunion.

Damon: Can we go back in time to the old Stefan who cared if Elena lived or died?

Stefan: What for? That's your job now.

Elena: Stefan has a point, Damon. I should find out what she wants.

Damon: You can't protect yourself.

Stefan: Ok, fine. Then I'll go.

Damon: You pissed off enough originals to last a lifetime. I'll go.

(He takes the invite from Elena's hands)

Elena: Hey!

Damon: End of story.

(He leaves. Stefan and Elena exchange a worried glance.)
