8 Bennet

Chapter 8

I wake up to someone banging my door.

"Go away."

Bang bang

"Go away!!" I say much louder.

"Lisa open the door."

I roll out of bed and crawl to the door, unlocking it to see Eliza standing looking like she was run over by horses.

"What do you want and what do you look like this?"

"Sorry for waking you but I wanted to know if you have any painkillers."

"Nope, sorry." As I was about to close the door, she stuck her foot.

"Wait! Can you help me get from the drug store. I saw one down the road."

"Wha–no! I don't want to go. I'm tired. Go ask Audrey."

"You know she won't go. Or she might get the wrong drugs on purpose."

"But-"

"Please. Please Lisa." She begs giving me the puppy dog eyes. I close my eyes and let out a frustrated sigh.

"Fine. Let me just brush my teeth."

"Thank you!! You're the best." She says hugging me.

"Yeah yeah."

"French booze is strong. I'm never drinking so much."

"I'm pretty sure you will." I say.

She moves in my room and make herself comfortable on my bed. "But this hangover is killing me. I can't think straight."

I laugh at her predicament. When I was done brushing my teeth, I threw on a hoodie and head out the door. Evan was passed out on the chair with his trousers on his head, yes his head and Jayden on the floor without his shirt. I quickly take out my phone and take a picture while laughing silently to myself.

I step out into the cold and tighten my hands around myself as I walk down the street. There's a big difference between the weather here and that of Miami. The cold would take some getting used to.

It is really beautiful in the morning. I saw a boy riding his bicycle and an elderly woman opening her flower shop. It truly is peacefully, definitely a welcome change to how it is back home.

Walking into the drug store, I notice I'm the only one and I don't see anyone working. I check the door again to be sure the sign says 'open' and I'm actually not breaking in.

"Hello? Anyone here? The sign said 'open'."

I got no reply and I was about to step back out when I heard rustling behind me.

"Bonjour. désolé j'étais à l'arrière." (sorry I was in the back.) A guy with a very bright smile that looks to be in his late twenties came to sight.

"Oh bonjour? Um I can't speak French and if you can understand me, I need some pain killers."

He chuckles, "yes I can understand you. I'll go get it." I nod in appreciation as I wait at the counter for him to come.

He comes back quickly still sprouting his cute smile.

"So what's your name?"

"Why do you want to know?" I stare at him weirdly wondering why he want to know my name.

"Just want to know cause a pretty face like yours have an equally pretty name." He says and I cringe.

Is that supposed to be a pickup line?

I gave a tight lip smile. "So what you're saying is, ugly people can't have pretty names?"

"No-that wasn't what I meant-"

"Then what did you mean?" I cock an eyebrow.

"You know what, it's fine. I'm sorry if that statement offended you."

"Thank you."

"So may I know your name now?" He still tries.

"I'm not in anyway obligated to tell you though."

He raises his hand in surrender, "Sorry. But at least tell me what you're doing in France because you obviously don't live here."

"What makes you say that?"

"Well for one you don't look like you're from here. Two, you have an accent and three you can't speak French." He says with a satisfied smirk.

"Touché. If you must know, I am taking an internship program here."

"I knew it. I'm Bennet."

"Nice to meet you."

"Won't you tell me your name." He tries once more. He's starting to creep me out. Yeesh.

"It's not important." I smile sweetly. I am sick of him trying to know my name. I paid for the drugs and shoved to them in said a quiet thank and head for the door.

"Will I see you again?"

"Hmm?"

"I was saying if you'd like to get lunch with me sometime?" I stood stunned. I blink once, I blink twice.

"Um no. Because I will be busy and frankly I'm interested... don't get me wrong! You're cute but I'm just not feeling it." I smile. "Thanks anyways." And I was out. Didn't even wait to guage his reaction.

Ever since I got back from the drug store, I stayed in my room while the rest nurse their hangover.

I did tell Eliza what happened at the store and she whack me in the head with a pillow, calling me an 'oblivious oaf', her words not mine. She said the guy was asking me out and I blatantly turn him down in the rudest way possible. I still don't see how what I said was rude. I only spoke my mind. But I let it go.

I haven't run into Audrey today at all which is weird. I don't think she's home and I'm happy she isn't.

Feeling bored, I decided to call my step mum. I haven't spoken to her or my dad since I got to France.

"Cami my girl!!"

"Hey Elaine."

"How are you? Heard you are in France."

"I'm okay and yeah I left for an internship program."

"And you didn't bother to call me or your father?"

"I know, I know and I'm sorry. France has just been a hassle."

"Paris right?"

"Yeah. It's been hard because of lack of being able to communicate in French which landed me in trouble at the restaurant and I ended up getting myself on probation. But It wasn't technical my fault. I have managed to gain friends and enemies in one week!"

"Oh my girl. You can be a handful sometimes, I wonder how your mum kept up with you."

"Hey!! You love me regardless!"

"Unfortunately I do." She jokes. "Don't worry your pretty head my girl, you get the hang of it."

"Can't wait."

"I have to go now. Don't be a stranger!"

"You too Elaine."

"Bye baby girl."

The call was disconnected. I dragged my laptop closer and logged in to my Netflix account. I'd watch movies until I pass out and that I did. I wake to someone talking behind my door. Realising I must have dosed off, i paused the movie and check the time.

2 am

I walk to my door and throw it open only to see Audrey pacing by my door talking on the phone. I don't know about what cause I can't understand her but I just stand there because she hasn't noticed me yet. She kept talking until she sees me and looks like a deer caught in headlights. She quickly bid her goodbyes to the person on the phone.

At this point she looks like she has been caught stealing from the cookie jar.

Weird.

"What are you doing speaking your weird language by my door?" I question.

Her face seems to relax and she smirks, "Oh it's nothing you should worry about Lisa."

"The fact that you say I should not worry makes me worry." I eye suspiciously.

She simply giggles.

"Right. Why didn't you let me in last night?"

"Four words. I don't like you."

"So you'd rather I'd die?"

She shrugs and walks away.

"Whatever." I say closing my door back. Something is fishy but I'm too tired to figure out what.
