5 Chapter 5

Luke was not in the right frame of mind to drive so i took his keys and i drove as quickly as i could to the hospital. He was silent all through the ride and i could feel his uneasiness because he was constantly tapping his foot. He kept murmuring some words which i later understood was a prayer. I had never seen him this nervous in the short while i had known him and i really wished for his sake that his mother would be fine.

We got to the hospital a few mins to 10pm and without even waiting for me to properly park the car, he dashed out and ran into the building. After successfully finding a good spot to park i went into the building and headed straight for the receptionist's desk. I asked for the direction Luke had taken and she directed me towards a waiting room. Navigating my way based on the directions i was given, i finally got to the waiting room and scanned the place but there wasn't any sign of Luke. I figured he probably would have gone straight to the doctor's office to have the papers signed so that the surgery might be proceeded and so i decided to wait for him in the waiting room knowing fully well that if he was done with the doctor he would have to wait here. I went in and took a seat close to the window, resting my head on the window pane as i was really exhausted. I was already beginning to fall asleep when i felt a hand tap me slightly. I sat up and saw that it was Luke. He sat beside me and sighed . I could tell that he was really exhausted too.

"So?... did you do it? what did the doctor say? tell me something i'm anxious here" i nudged him.

"Yeah...be calm i signed the papers and they have proceeded the surgery in the theatre." he said raising his hands in surrender "the doctor said she had a seizure as a result of the build up of the cancer to her brain. He said she might or might not make it out of the surgery due to her age and other factors or could even end up in a coma" he said finally, his voice shaky.

I felt pity for him. i really couldn't imagine being in his shoes and still be able to comport myself...i would cry all day and refused to be consoled. I was learning a lot about Luke and so far the most admired quality i had of him was his calmness.

I held his hands firmly and assured him that everything would turn out fine and his mother would make it out without any hitches. He looked up at me and gave me one of the most sorrowful smile i had ever seen and thanked me. I let go of his hands and continued resting my head on the pane.

Neither of us spoke a word more until i remembered that Iyke would probably start to worry about me and i had to call him. I turned to him to excuse myself but discovered he had already fallen asleep. I smiled at how peaceful he looked sleeping and found my way out of the hospital.

It was quite chilly outside as i hugged my overcoat. Dialling Iyke's number i searched for a comfortable place to sit outside. He picked up just as i was about sitting down.

"Hope?...Oh thank God you are alright, i kept trying to reach you but your line was switched off, what happened babe is everything okay? why aren't you home yet?" he kept asking not minding the fact that he hadn't given me the chance to even answer one question.

"It's okay babe i'm fine you probably called when my phone was out of service. I'm at the hospital with Luke, his mother had a seizure and had to undergo surgery asap."

" Wow! that's sad. How is he? is he alright? Can i talk to him? Is his mother going to be fine?"

"Well we don't know yet...we are waiting for the surgery to be over and then we would know the outcome and yeah he's holding up pretty well than i imagined tho he's asleep now."

"Okay babe. Have you guys eaten? Can i get you anything?...Change of clothes maybe?"

"No babe i can't risk it... it's already too late for you to be driving all the way here. I don't know how long the surgery is supposed to take but i will call you if i need anything tomorrow...i know this wasn't how you planned to spend your visit. I'm really sorry things didn't go as planned. I promise i would make it up to you?

"No babe...you don't have to be sorry for anything. I'm really proud that you are doing this, it speak volumes of your personality. Just make sure you eat something and tomorrow i would bring whatever you need."

"Thank you so much. you are the best. I love you.'

"Love you more goodnight."

I walked back into the hospital to the waiting room as i hung up the call. Luke was still asleep and in order not to wake him, i silently slid to my sit next to him and with my head resting on the pane i fell asleep too.

"Mr. Adams...Mr Adams" I heard someone call as i slowly opened my eyes. Luke seemed to have heard it too as he immediately sat up.

"Mr. Adams the surgery was over 2hours ago but we needed to keep her in the intensive care unit for her to rest fully. She is okay now and ready to receive visitors and the doctor has asked me to send for you." i heard the nurse say rather hastily.

"Okay thank you very much" Luke said as he began to stand up. I rubbed my eyes and checked my phone for the time. it was already 7am which means the surgery had gone on for 7hours. Luke held out his hand helping me up as we began walking to the I.C.U when the nurse stopped us and said.

"I'm sorry but the visit is only permitted to family members ".

"Oh" i said and was about turning back when Luke held my hand and said quite plainly to the nurse "She's family" and continued walking on holding my hand.
