D.D.R - Different Dimension Reincarnation

"Did I die?"

Such was the first thought that occurred to William as he came back to his senses.

A complete blackness covered his eyes, preventing him from seeing anything, or, perhaps, that last flash of lightning had been so bright that everything else seemed to be filled with darkness in comparison?

He tried to move his body. Okay, that seemed to work. While gradually getting used to the sensation of feeling again, William noticed that he was on a bed.

Feeling around, William noticed that the size of the bed was much larger than the one he was used to, and the bedding seemed to be made with silk instead of cotton. Considering the texture of the current bed, as well as the darkness that pervaded the room, he deduced that he couldn't be in a hospital either.

Although it was no longer completely dark, the shadows were still sprawled throughout room, and only a hint of moonlight shone through an opening above in the room.

"There doesn't seem to be any source of lighting in this room. And the walls seem too archaic to be made of cement either."

"I'm didn't get kidnapped while I was unconscious did I?"

Spooked by the thought, William quickly got up to see if he was trapped in any way.

As soon as he had sat up, a small gasp escaped through his lips.

Upon adjusting to the darkness, William saw that both his arms and legs were much shorter and thinner than normal. They did not seem to be gaunt, but rather we're quite muscular for their size. He looked at them, confused, before suddenly coming to a realization.

"Could it be that I was reincarnated?" William thought of the genre of the small books that his friends seemed to be so excited about in his high-school years.

A burst of excitement shot through his body momentarily, before it was quickly extinguished the next moment.

"Damn, I really let those people brainwash me", he thought gloomily. "How can I be excited when I'm never going to see my parents, friends, or Yu-Gi-Oh cards ever again?"

"I've got no family, no allies, no one I know here. I've not got a single clue about what kind of environment I'm in, I'm stuck in a body of a freaking child, and worst of all,"

He looked around again.

"There probably isn't a single source of actual entertainment in this bloody area!"

William had noticed upon waking up that, while the room he was in seemed to be quite large, even dwarfing his old room, that there were no signs of technology anywhere to be seen. No television, phones, or even lightbulbs. This he has concluded that the place he was in probably did not have any source of higher-level technology.

As he considered his next course of action, a mechanical voice suddenly rung in his ear, followed by words appearing in front of him.

[Detected that user has awoken. Activating Master Duel System.]

[Greetings Duelist, please view the General Interface Tutorial. To view the General Interface Tutorial, think or say "Okay".]

Slightly confused, William unconsciously let out the words "Okay".

Immediately, a large panel opened up in from of him. The panel was a deep, aquamarine colour, but William could partially still see the room behind the panel. Although the panel itself was bright, the brilliance didn't seem to affect the world around it.

On the upper left corner was a small mailbox icon, and to the right of it, a small ledger-looking icon, as well as a greyed out person icon. In the center of the panel sat several larger icons.

[Welcome to the General Interface tutorial, Duelist. This tutorial will show you the functions of most of the General interface in the Master Duel System.]

Immediately after the voice ended, the first icon began shining red.

[This is the Deck Building Interface. This interface allows the User to manage all cards that they have collected through the Master Duel System.]

The deck building Interface was opened up, revealing several empty slots on the side of the interface, as well as rows of empty rectangles in the center of the panel.

"Oh my God! This is a Yu-Gi-Oh deck builder!" William suddenly came to his senses before breaking into a large grin.

It seemed that he would not be so bored where ever he was after all.

The interface suddenly exited back to the main screen, and the second main icon began glowing a violet hue.

[This is the Shop Interface. The User can use World currency to exchange for card packs and pre-built decks in the store.]

As the Shop Interface opened up, William could see several card packs that he was incredibly familiar with floating around. Upon closer look, however, he realized that he could only see card packs from the very beginning of Yu-Gi-Oh's history.

Slightly confounded, William continued watching the tutorial. The third icon on the main interface now flashed green.

Upon entering the third interface, William noticed that the screen was split in half, with the right side of the panel greyed out. Immediately afterward, the left side of the panel glowed red again.

[This is the Artifact Interface. The user can merge excess cards to create artifacts capable of leaving the User's sphere of influence. The amount of cards required to merge an Artifact is based on the rarity of the card that the user wishes to create.]

"Interesting," William thought. "This interface seems to be completely different from the actual game that I'm used to."

He had the two interfaces before, but this new interface was a great surprise to him.

[There are 6 standard rarities in the Master Duel System- Common, Rare, Super Rare, Ultra Rare, Secret Rare, and Ultimate Rare.]

[Common Artifacts can be created by merging 1000 of the same common card, Rare Artifacts can be merged for 500, Super Rares for 250, Ultra Rares for 100, Secret Rares for 30, and Ultimate Rares for 10 of the same card.]

William gave a start at those words.

"1000 cards for one artifact? How much does the system intend for me to pull?" He angrily thought. "Also, shouldn't it be more cards for higher rarities? Why does it take more cards for the common rarity artifacts?"

Surprisingly, the mechanical voice answered him.

[Because the Duelling Master System functions outside of the world's laws,

it requires multiple sources of energy to create an artifact that abides by

the world's principles.]

[The higher a cards rarity, the more complete it is, and thus, the closer it is to the existing principles of this world's laws. This is why higher rarity cards require less copies for the system to forge an artifact with.]

Once again, the system returned to the main interface. The other main icons on the Main interface were greyed out, but the system wasn't quite done yet.

The small envelope icon on the top began glowing yellow at this moment.

[This is the inbox, it stores all rewards and prizes related to the Dueling Master System.]

[Besides this, it is also capable of storing any artifacts or relics belonging to the user in a separate space, as well as keeping an account of all system announcements and tutorials.]

"Interesting," William thought. "I wonder what these so called 'relics' are?" He pondered.

This time, the system ignored William, and continued without explaining the alien term to him. The icon besides the mailbox also glowed yellow.

[This is the Quests tab. It issues and keeps track of the user's expeditions, trials, and tribulations. Upon completing a quest, an appropriate reward will be bestowed upon the user, and should the user fail, a penalty will also be applied.]

William nodded. So it appeared that the main way to earn World currency would probably be due to this questing system.

He waited for the last miniature icon to begin glowing, but it instead remained a dull grey colour; yet another locked feature present in the system.

[Thank you for completing the General Interface Tutorial, Duelist. Beginner rewards and a recount of the tutorial have been added to the inbox.]

With that spoken, the system fell silent.

Immediately after, a chirp echoed into William's ear, and the number 15 in bright red appeared on the bottom corner of the inbox icon.

Opening the inbox again, a wave of confusion hit William.

The three newest mail in the inbox were tutorial rewards, as the system had told him, but the first 12 notifications were entirely different. He took a look at the oldest message first.

< Detected that user has reached the first stage of the Foundation Building Stage, rewarding 100 world coins>

Continuing up, he saw several more messages of a similar kind.

< Detected that user has reached the second stage of the Foundation Building Stage, rewarding 200 world coins>

<Detected that user…

With each ascending mail, the system rewarded him an amount of world coins that were 100 more than the previous mail, until he saw the fourth mail from the top of the inbox.

< Detected that user has reached the second stage of Body Refining Stage, rewarding 1200 world coins>

He wasn't quite sure what he saw, but William did like the fact that he now had 7800 World coins for free.

After browsing through the previous emails, William took a look at the rewards for the General Interface Tutorial completion.

<Detected that User has completed the General Interface Tutorial (1/3)- Rewarding 2000 world coins>

<Detected that User has completed the General Interface Tutorial (2/3)- Rewarding Common Artifact x1 Broken Bamboo Sword>

<Detected that User has completed the General Interface Tutorial (3/3)- Rewarding Beginner's Structure Deck>

Looking at the rewards, William felt quite ecstatic. Although the world currency wasn't as much as he had hoped for, it was still a good chunk of cash. The Beginner's structure deck was jubilant-inducing as well. Finally, the artifact version of the broken bamboo sword had not escaped William's eyes either, but he didn't have too much to comment on that, other than the fact that the system seemed too stingy in that regard.

Brimming with liveliness, William opened his final reward, then came to a sudden stop.

Before him sat a glorious collection of 40 cards that William could only describe as "absolutely garbage".

"This… is this really a deck?" He cursed. "Even the beginners deck must be better than this piece of crap!"

William quickly exited the inbox, intent on buying some cards. He could not bear to look at such a monstrosity of a deck list for too long. However, as he left the inbox, he was momentarily distracted by a new '1' that had appeared by the quests icon.

Clicking on the icon, he was brought into the Quest Interface, where there sat a new quest for him to view.

<New Quest: A Duelist's Weapon- Locate and Equip a Duel disk.

Reward: 1000 World Currency, System Activates Shadow Duel Tutorial

Failure Penalty: None>

William stared at the quest for a minute.

"Where am I supposed to find a Yu-Gi-Oh duel disk?" He pondered, "Is there one lying around nearby? Is there perhaps more people who know about the game in this place?"

As he pulled his attention away from the panel, William noticed for the first time that there was significantly more light in the room than when he had first awoken. It seemed that dawn had broken while he had been immersed in the system's tutorial.

Curious, he stood up to observe the brightened surroundings better, when he was momentarily seized by an unexplained sensation of fear.

Before he could attempt to figure out what had scared him so, his right arm suddenly lunged at his throat, seizing it firmly.

"Foul Demon, who do you think you are? To dare steal the body of this young master, do you think our Zhang family has no one capable?!"
