37 The Fox Old Man

Shadow emerged from the underground base, his blue eyes embracing the warm light of the sun, which glistened like a gem in its reflection. Shadow was dressed entirely in black assassin garb, with a mask covering his face. The only things visible were his eyes, a dark necklace, and his long black hair that fluttered in the wind.

He was extremely secretive about his identity, as all information about him was shrouded in mystery—even his name was only known as "the shadow" due to his impressive skills in assassination and information gathering.

With his strength and intellect, he ascended to the top 100 highly skilled assassins in the organization. No one has ever known his true identity until now, and even the highest officials have found it difficult to elicit information about the shadow.

This also means that his methods of protecting his information are on par with the top 20 highly skilled assassins, who are also skilled at concealing their information to avoid detection.

"Neh, neh, I'm bored," the great spirit said telepathically to Shadow, who only smiled and said to his heart that they were going home to play soon.

But before he could vanish, someone appeared out of nowhere wearing a fox mask, but this did not conceal his long white hair, and his kimono was white and black, representing yin and yang. His posture was slightly bent as he held a black staff with a white gem on top, the staff itself measuring 193 cm in length.

If the old man in the fox mask had appeared in the city, he would have ignored it, but now that it had appeared in front of him with no one around, you could feel the old man's energy was still far stronger than his.

"As expected from the named shadow, such clean assassination again, hahaha, this old man is really liking you more and more, why don't we go for a tea in the city and talk?" said the old man with the fox mask, staring at the shadow with deep energy and amazement.

"Hmmn, Senior, your skill is far superior to mine," the shadow said with a slight bow and a deep chill in his voice.

"Owuu, You won't have a wife if you keep that cold voice for too long, young man.

Hmn, maybe I can find you one, what do you think?"

The old man in the fox mask replied jokingly. He's known the fox for five years in the organization, and he's been assigned to Shadow as a messenger, mission giver, and observer.

"Senior, please don't bring up marriage.

I'm still young, as you can see from my energy and voice, and I have no intention of joining any clans, especially yours," he replied, while a short glow appeared in his blue eyes.

When he heard Shadow's words, the fox-old man shook his head. He really just wants to drag the kid back and force him to join his clan from now on. Such a genius, if properly trained, will have even more potent abilities; such a gem should not be squandered, he thought.

But he dared not use force because the organization explicitly stated that forcing a member to join one of their clans would result in harsh punishment and because eyes were everywhere in the organization, just as his eyes were on Shadow as an observer and mission giver.

Rather than his clan's rising, it may backfire on him and cause their demise, as well as force him to endure a harsh punishment he may not be capable of handling, so he kept the friendliness with the shadow in mind.

The fox old man sighed again before tossing the mission reward: a thousand gold coins and a bottle of medium potion called "cure health," which cures the drinker's illness and relieves pain, but only to a point because the cure health potion has a limit to how much it can cure. The potion can only treat minor illnesses.

Shadow's breathing became heavy and excited when he saw the rewards, especially the potion, as he caught the potion first, not caring about the gold coins because he had a lot of wealth from his previous missions and from killing the nobleman just now. What he required was a rare potion that had always been too expensive and difficult to obtain. Even merchants would struggle to sell such a potion without protection because they would be a living target if people found out.

He discovered a scroll in his reward after catching the potion. Shadow's brows furrowed as he opened the scroll and read the classified mission. His new mission stated that he must locate the new rising king, whose star flared up seven hours ago.

It was at the top of the bullet list in the organization for him to receive such a confidential mission rank, especially since it was given to him to search for the unknown rising king. Because he has no idea what the person looks like, he may have to search all three continents for him. He might have to travel to the small kingdoms to find the man.

"Senior, are you sure this is my mission? Even though I'm good at gathering information, I think it's far better to use the organization's channels because it will be much faster to find him," Shadow asked the old fox.

"Sigh, about that, it's not that we didn't want to use the channels, but those damn kings have become rowdy again, especially King Lionel, with his daring to covet our organization more and more now that the crown prince is a disciple of the great mage as a support, he thinks he's really going to conquer an entire continent, that conceited fool of a king,

That bastard king might have swallowed us alive if it hadn't been for the other two continents vying for us. Sigh

Shadow: The three continents are currently in turmoil. Keep this in mind and be prepared for any unexpected situation, or it could spell your doom.

As we speak, kingdoms and empires are on the move, infiltrating our bases and planting spies in our midst. I can't help but think that the once-magnificent organization that has always been spying and instilling spies is now the one being spied on and is now in passive mode, which is such a dramatic shift in events. Sigh

This is also why the higher-ups tasked me with selecting trustworthy assassins for the mission, and I chose you and five others for this mission, so don't you dare shame me, alright hahaha," the fox-old man laughed again.

"All right, I'll try to find the person in secret.

I'm curious what will happen to this amateur king once you have his location and information," Shadow inquired.

"Hmm, well, we'll decide whether to form a partnership with him for the organization's future development or sell his information to the other kings to divert their attention away from the organization.

This is also why our organization is being watched by those greedy kings after all; they think we know who the rising king is.

Just take your time doing your job, okay? The reward will be big if you succeed this time, bye-bye," the old man explained as he vanished into thin air.

Shadow learned a lot from the fox old man, and he now understands what's going on with the organization. He has been away from the organization for three months, and in an unexpected turn of events, the famous organization in the dark has been exposed and is now being threatened and eyed by the king.

Shadow already knew the answer: it was because the houses were hiring the organization's assassin, which also meant that the houses were testing the organization's capabilities at the same time.

But this did not deter him; he only had a passing acquaintance with the organization and did not wish to become involved with it. He is free to leave the organization because no one knows his appearance or identity; he is not afraid at all.

"Great spirit! Let's play while we search for the new rising king, okay?" Shadow said as he walked away from the enemy base.

"Yey, play, food, happy hahaha!" shouts the great spirit, filled with shadow emotions, care, and sincerity
