1 Chapter 1: The Human condition

And there she was.

She stood on top of the hill. His lover held his jacket in her hands, which flew out of his grip mere seconds ago. Meliodas ran to the girl as fast as he could and hugged the silver-haired Goddess.

But it wasn't Elizabeth.

Or, to be precise, not his Elizabeth.

As he trapped her in his arms and almost screamed in joy, he noticed her eyes. Her ocean blue eyes were different. Not in color or form, just in the way they glanced at him. They held many emotions, but not any of the emotions he had hoped to see. There were so many emotions, in fact, that he had trouble to distinguish any of them. But the primary thing he saw was... confusion. But why?

"Who are you?"

He didn't know his heart was still capable to shatter like that.

The demon stared at the human of the savage clan in shock. He didn't know what to say. She was Elizabeth. His Elizabeth. The woman he loved more than anything, the woman he betrayed his entire clan for, the reason he felt happy for the first time in his life and she asked him who he was? Perhaps this was just a nightmare. Maybe he would wake up in the arms of his beloved in a few seconds and forget about the dream. But even after many more moments, the moment of his waking never came.

"Hey, are you ok?" the voice of his companion got him out of his thoughts. She sounds exactly like her. But this wasn't a dream. This was reality. This wasn't an illusion his father send as revenge and this wasn't some bad joke. He stopped starring and noticed that the confusion in her eyes converted to concern. He found his voice again and said:

"My name is Meliodas"

-----------------------------------------------------

"Meliodas, could you help me?"

The prince crawled off of his thin mattress and trudged to Elli. The girl with curled, silver hair placed the pot over the fire and cooked the meat. And still, he didn't know how it was possible for her to stand here. To be alive and to walk and to talk, to play, to help and to be exactly like Elizabeth. How? How could it be? How could she stand there when she was killed, what?, 30 human years ago. And she didn't even remember anything...

It didn't matter.

As long as she felt good and still smiled like she was every good thing incarnated, everything was fine. As long as she was fine, he was ok.

------------------------------------------------

The day she healed a broken bone of another human girl might have been the best day he had in a long while. It really was Elizabeth. It felt good to know his theory was correct. Her right, blue eye changed to gold with the Godess symbol on it. Even if he didn't particularly like the symbol of the Godess race, (Good Gods, he liked Elizabeth, just because she was a Goddess it didn't mean he liked the whole race. He was still a demon, mind you.) he was never so happy to see it. He loved Elizabeth. Don't  get him wrong. And he was sure the woman in front of him was Elizabeth. But she wasn't... His Elizabeth. She couldn't remember anything. Yes, this Elizabeth began to love him in the past few months and yes, he loved this version of her too. He would always love her. No matter what, how or where she was. But nevertheless, she wasn't his Godess.

And he missed his Elizabeth so much.

-------------------------------------------------

It began to rain that day It seemed even the weather mourned the oncoming event and following days. Elizabeth took the demons hands and explained:

"Meliodas, I remember everything!"

"That's great Elizabeth! "

"Listen to me! Meliodas, we have been cursed!"

"Cursed? From the Gods all those years ago? What Curse?"

"I will tell you everything, but first you have to promise me to break this curse. No matter the cost!"

"Elizabeth, I don't understand..."

"Promise me!"

...

"I promise"

"Perfect, then I'll tell you. Every time I die, I will be reincarnated. And everytime I am reincarnated, I will inevitably meet you, fall in love with you and, also inevitably, die infront of your eyes. "

Back then he thought the words Who are you broke his heart.

It couldn't even be compared to the heartache he felt now.

---------------------------------------------

And it happened exactly like she said it would. The human girl named Elizabeth was killed by accident by many tumbeling spears. Meliodas saw the framework fall down and crush her and was unable to do anything. He could only witness the event. It was as if someone put him in the front row of a theather and said: Here. Look at that.

He made her a grave and set off. With the knowledge that he would meet her again. Not knowing when, not how, not where, just that he would.

But Elizabeth was selfish. Just like him. And she was stubborn. Just like him. They had to have something in common after all. So they would break this curse. Even if it took them five, ten, twenty, fifty, hundred or thousands of years, he swore the curse would be broken.

Her last words?

"Don't let them win"
