1 Chapter 1

It's raining outside

The sound of thunder jolts me from my deep slumber. It's really hard to not want to go back to sleep. After all, according to our "Oh so mighty society, we must get at least 8 hours of sleep, so we can function properly".

" Camilla, get your lazy behind down here, breakfast won't start cooking without you" my loving elder sister Isabelle calls unto me

I fall back into my bed and try wishing myself to fall back asleep but to no avail, so I just decide to start my day

I get up, get into my loafers and start to head down to the kitchen. "Sleeping beauty finally arises, how magnificent" Isabelle said to me. I just gave her a shrug and ask. "what's for breakfast?"

"You tell me" she said looking at the timetable

I nod my head on our island as I remember today is my turn to make breakfast. "Do I have to?" I question and she looks at me with her million dollar smile as she says "Yes".

I decide to fry eggs and do some toast bread along with it, plus it was the only other available option left since we already run out of groceries... I wonder how that happened because I just bought the last one the week before, I push the thought out of my head and focus on breakfast. After about 10 minutes of frying and toasting bread, I'm finally done with the whole cooking scenario. " Isabelle, breakfast is served and it won't wait for you" I decided it was my turn to yell back at her for waking me up so rudely.

She walks into the kitchen in her all black uniform and then she did her hair into a donut. In our society today, we are defined by color and then experience and how much our willingness is to work. I get the color red because I started not to long ago, my sister is black which is the highest ranking color because she's been doing this for over 15 years. We all work for the government after our college days, no matter what you studied, there is always a place for you in the government unless you didn't complete education days, then they'd set you up with grocery stores or supermarkets and all those other jobs, their color of clothing is yellow and that's how it all works.

She works in the automation department, she's part of those that make the people of our society run smoothly without any flaws. "Hey Isabelle, I need to check my chip, it's been giving off weird sounds"

"You couldn't think to tell me this yesterday night" she said with bread in her mouth

"It comes and goes and this morning, it started again, except this time it's intensity is way worse than before" I tell her while giving her puppy dog eyes

"You know the drill, stand up and let me check" she says to me. I do exactly as I am told and she begins the check. She brings out her government authorized tablet and places my chip in it to look for what could be wrong with it. "It got exposed to water, Maria, probably while you were having your bath" she says with a stern look on her face.

"So I just need to let it get dry right" I ask her

"No need, we got upgraded at work for these kind of situations" she says as she opens a slot from the tablet and inserts my chip into it. Our chips are our way of life, it does everything for us, we are enhanced humans, we have blood and wires flowing through our bodies, we are like machines except we are humans and we don't love because love is a total waste if time.

"All done, next time be more careful if you may" she says to me as she grabs her toast like she wouldn't eat till she gets back home

"Bye Camilla" she yells as she runs out the door.

For a society that doesn't believe in love and affection, it's kind of hard to process what I feel towards my sister, it feels like we're coworkers living in the same house, but then again, there's something else that's there, something deeper than the surface. If only I could understand.

I contemplate on that matter for a couple more minutes as I wash the utensils I use in cooking.

I look at the time and see that it is still a little bit early, I don't have to go in to work today but I need something to distract me from my own thoughts, so I head up and had my bath. After drying myself, I get into my underwear, and then into my red uniform. I work in the finance sector and I've been working there for three years now hence the color red. I use my body spray, grab my keys, and head out the door.

Perks of being an upgraded human is that I can display my phone screen like a hologram in front of my eyes. I do that and set the alarm and lock the door. After spending a painstakingly annoying 45 minutes in traffic, I finally get to my place of work.

I park in the lot and headed on into my office, exchanging pleasantries with all those who greet and those who don't, what can I say, it's fun being here. I see my colleague Dora coming from the elevator, I ask where she's headed and all she says is "to run an errand". " For who?" by this time I have my back to where I'm going and she just keeps walking away.

I wonder what's wrong with her. I turn back to face the elevator and boom, he just hits me from nowhere, like one minute he wasn't present and the next her was there. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to bump into you like that God I'm such a klutz" he keeps rambling to himself and in that moment I felt something, something that I couldn't explain and the moment he stops rambling he takes a deep breath and just says, "Hi, I'm Eric"
