1 Identity Thief

Prologue

"How can I help?"

"Hi, is Kasper Lee here?"

"Let me check. Give me a moment."…"Sorry, there is no Mr. Lee here."

"Oh… he must have already gone home..."

I am cut off. "No, there is no Mr. Lee working here"

"You must be mistaken…"

She cuts me off again. "I'm sorry but a Mr. Lee definitely does not work here."

My face drops. "Oh, okay. Sorry"

I turn around and walk back to the entrance. Taking my phone from my bag, I dial his number while looking up at the building.

"Hi, babe. What's up?"

"Hi, are we still okay for dinner tonight?" In the background, I hear a female voice.

"Sorry babe, my secretary just told me we have an emergency meeting. I'll see you at home okay?" The call ends before I have the chance to reply.

In a daze, I get into my car and drive home. If he is not working in the office… A million questions fly through my head.

When I arrive home, I go straight to his office. Never having a reason to be in there, I had never thought to explore. I wander over to his desk. Opening the top draw, I pull out the stack of papers. Strange.

If he doesn't work there, why are all these documents signed in his name?

I empty all the other draws.

When I get to the bottom draw, I notice it is heavier and when I open it, I see a small black box. I am shocked when I find a gun, a key and two passports. I ignore the gun. Kasper told me he used to be in the army. But when I open the passports, both hold pictures of Kasper… But one is named James Doncaster.

Huh?

I pull apart the rest of the office and find nothing. Feeling defeated I walk towards the door. Out of the corner of my eye, I catch a glimpse of something silver on top of the bookshelf. A small case. Using a chair, I climb up and pull it down. Locked. Suddenly, I remember the key from earlier.

Please fit. Please fit.

When the case pops open, my heart stops with it.
