2 The beginning of a wish

4 years earlier,

"Happy birthday to you, Williams!", an aged man cheered as he handed a boy a huge box. He continued, "May this help you on your life journey." The boy opened the wrapper to find a stack of books. The boy looked at the man with a confused expression, "Father? What are the books for?" His father laughed, "It's the stories of various detectives like us. One day your story will be written in these books too. I've given them to inspire you."

After staring at the books with a blank face for a while, the boy smiled and said, "Thank you!"

One year later

This boy is now sitting in his office as he waits for his first ever case. He scoffed as he remembered his presents from a year ago, "Thank you my foot."

It only has been an hour since he started his career as a detective and he was already getting tired of it. He started muttering to himself, " I had a pretty decent childhood. I even got accepted to the police academy. I know I should be thankful for everything but yet, I am unsatisfied. Why? It is true when people say that human beings are nothing but selfish bastards."

His lonely conversation got interrupted by a few knocks on his door. He got up from the nicely furnished chair and sat down on the boring wooden table as he yelled, "Come in!"

A petite woman entered the room. She had flawless skin and makeup. She had long silky blonde hair and she wore very fancy and expensive clothes. The scent of her perfume already filled the room which caused Pierce to choke on air. The girl asked with deep concern, "Are you okay?"

Pierce observed her for a moment. Her attitude didn't seem like the usual confident rich people. She had her hands on her mouth as well as an over the top expression on her face. When he noticed that her eyes were observing his coat, he slightly scoffed. Fortunately for him, the expression got unnoticed between his fit of coughs. 'Her micro-expression* showed that she's annoyed. She's just trying to win me over because I am from the infamous Williams family! She is the kind to just use me and toss me over when she's done. I am sorry honey, but I ain't starring in your unnecessary drama.'

Pierce glared at her and said in a commanding tone, "State your business." "Ah yes! This file-" "Put it there." The woman placed the file and smiled at Pierce, "So what-" "Is that all?" He further crossed his arms and legs to signify that he wasn't interested. She winced but tried speaking again, "Umm.... you are new here so-" "Do you want to show me around? Well there's no need for that. My father has already shown me. Thank you for the offer. You may leave." The woman flinched by hearing his deep voice. She tsked and got out of Pierce's room. "What a shameless woman, my God!" Then he sighed, "Fake people."

He slowly walked towards the file and picked it up. He was expecting a identity form was surprised to get a case file instead. He immediately closed the file by instinct and rubbed his forehead with his fingers.

"Ah, here we go. First step to the mission."
