29 Chapter 29 - A Trial? (2)

Theodore looked around as he patrolled a street along with his team.

He had walked along this street before; although it was pretty far from his house, he was still familiar with this area as he grew up in this city. However, the deference gaze and the attention he received from the passerby gave him a very different feeling.

Theodore could not help but straighten himself up, feeling proud.

The other fresh recruits of the team also had a similar expression to Theodore. Only Lucas's face remained unperturbed, but his eyes showed a hint of weariness.

'I hope nothing goes wrong with this patrol.' Lucas thought as he looked around before glancing at the recruits in his team, trying to be optimistic.

...

Theodore and the recruits followed Lucas during the patrol in an orderly manner, courteously.

The patrol had almost ended, and everything went well.

Theodore truly liked his job, and he felt he could have expectations for the future. He now had an excellent job with a good salary; as long as he persisted, he could save enough money to hire a better physician to cure his teacher.

While feeling happy that his life would improve, Theodore's cheerful aura exuded as he walked.

Lucas did not care about the thought of the group of new joiners in his teams; he believed that reality would soon teach them a lesson, just like what he had experienced long ago.

He then heard some noise, signaling some people quarreling. He signed, thinking that it was another awful day.

No matter how much Lucas complained in his heart, he still gestured for the team to quicken forward to see the situation.

...

Theodore speeded up his pace to keep up with the team. He soon got a glimpse at what had happened.

He saw a somewhat good-looking young man with a treacherous smile in clean and luxurious cloth commanding the surrounding robust men to encircle two people in the middle.

The two people blocked by these vicious-looking people were a middle-aged man and a cute-looking young girl. From their cloth, Theodore guessed that they were commoner living in the city like him, but he did not know them.

"Jasmine, why don't you follow me; I promise to treat you well." The young man who seemed to be in charge said with an evil grin.

The young girl, Jasmine, was trembling and sobbing as she tried to hide her figure behind the middle-aged man.

"That was young master Chasin. He was a well-known rogue in the city; his father was lucky enough to be a close follower of the city lord. No women who had followed him ended up well." A nearby recruit whispered to notify the others.

Lucas glared at the person talking dissatisfactory, causing him to close his mouth hastily. That person might think he was speaking quietly, but did he think others would be unable to hear it?

"Ahh!!!" Theodore shifted his gaze to look at the two people when he heard a scream; their situation worsened. The surrounding hooligans started to hurt the middle-aged man as the commanding young man grabbed Jasmine's ankle and pulled her to him.

"Stop!!! Tell them to stop, don't hurt my father." Jasmine kneeled and wretchedly cried as she miserably begged the young man, telling him to stop.

Theodore could not bear this despairing screen, so he glanced at Lucas. He requested his team leader with his eyes that they should hurry up to help the people.

Lucas caught Theodore's questioning gaze and responded by glancing back before lightly shaking his head.

Theodore widened his eyes in shock; he knew that some nobles had some privilege, but he did not think that it was to the extent that they could be so unscrupulous right in the face of many city guards.

Chasin, the young master, and his underling also seemed to notice the arrival of the city guard, but they did not care and casually laughed it off. He then threw a pouch to one of his subordinates and ordered him to deliver it to the guards.

That person hurriedly obeyed; he promptly came over and gave the pouch to Lucas.

"Help! Please help save my father." Jasmine also noticed their action, along with the existence of the city guard, so she yelled for help.

Jasmine's father, suffering from injuries on the ground, also gazed over with begging in his eyes; it was as if he saw hope in the city guard.

Nonetheless, the reality disappointed them; Jasmine and her father blankly stared as Lucas silently accepted the pouch. The faith in their eyes soon turned into hatred.

"You are a city guard; how can you abandon us?!" The girl, Jasmine, cried out to question the city guard's conscious.

Lucas glanced at them as he lightly frowned before quietly leading his team away.

Theodore shifted his head to look back and forth between Lucas and Jasmine, along with her father, hesitating to say something to Lucas.

The recruits had different expressions; some were similar to Theodore's, some were suppressing their anguish, and some were indifferent.

Lucas ignored the expression his team had; he just faintly asked, "Can you guys bear the consequence of offending the noble? If you could, I will not stop you."

Theodore opened his mouth, trying to answer; however, the reply struck his throat.

Even if he did not voice his response, Theodore knew the answer he had in his heart; he could not.

He still had his teacher. If a noble targeted him, not only would his life be miserable, but it would also greatly affect his teacher's recovery.

Theodore could not resolve himself to risk his and his teacher's lives for someone he did not even know.

He perceived that the recruit in the team had made a decision similar to his from the silence he saw from the other recruit.

Theodore could only wordlessly follow Lucas's lead with his team to move away with a heavy heart.

He could still hear the cursing and crying voice echoing from behind as he walked away. He clenched his fist tightly as he closed his eyes, trying to ignore the screen behind him.

Theodore did not know why a particular alarm rang inside his heart, conveying that he had made a grave mistake; however, he really did not know what else he could do.
