8 Investigation

"I know the danger of being an exonn. Before the assessment begins, I will hunt a few times and sell it. It should be worth a few million gard. It will last for a long time if you can manage it well."

"I understand, brother. We will keep it well for Lola," said Gil with a serious look on his face.

Rhys chuckled. "Don't be too serious. It will just be a few hunts, but I could already earn an amount that we could never dream of before."

Then he looked in a particular direction in the city. "Don't wait for me. I still have to go somewhere else."

"Be careful, brother."

Wings appeared on Rhys' back, then he flew away. He landed on top of a building and stared at the apartment. It was near the edge of the city.

Below the apartment, there were huge plastic boxes being lifted and put into the container of a truck.

"Mr. Felix, your good deed is admirable. You consistently donate food and materials to the camps near the hunting zone," said an apartment resident helping to lift the boxes.

Felix, the apartment owner, laughed. "Without them, how can we business owners have peace of mind? This is a little thing compared to what they do for us. I know the exonns have a lot of money, but it's the thought that matters, right? Besides, the camp is quite far from the city of Enberg, the nearest city in the hunting zone in the west. The camp specializes in handling the materials for magic beasts. Although the meat of the edible magic beast is delicious, the variety of food there is limited."

The last box was put inside, and then he looked at a man who was in his thirties, looked muscular, and had tattoos. "Is everything ready?"

"Yes, uncle," said Henry.

Felix nodded, then pressed a switch on his key. The truck floated.

Henry drove the truck while Felix was sitting in the other seat.

Inside the truck, there was a frown on Felix's face. "What happened?"

Henry sighed. "I put the other boxes on the room of that Isor like what we plan in exchange for his free rent. The sleeping gas was released on time, but I did not expect a woman to visit him. I heard their conversation through the secret recorder that we put. She will visit more often than we expect. You know, I can't stop the sleeping gas once it is released. It will take time before the sleeping gas takes effect, and we are lucky that Isor did not let the woman enter his room because of his messy place."

"Damn it, that kid fits our target description. We even confirmed it by monitoring him. Why did he not say that he has an aunt nearby?! Dumb kid!"

"Investigation is still our weak link. We still could not make a thorough background check for targets."

"How's the woman? Can we make her disappear?"

Henry shook his head. "I heard that she lives in an apartment owned by a Tier 2 exonn dwarf. If she disappeared, her family might ask for that dwarf's help."

"Damn it! It looks like we have to move away earlier than we planned."

Henry sighed. "The plan was good. We could have kept it for a longer time. Those people we kidnap should not be personally visited by their relatives or family as long as we make them look alive through their social media or phone. It should have been better if they could invent something that could completely imitate someone's voice. We still have to use an AI to edit a voice recording."

Felix chuckled. "I think someone is already funding research like that. Even a projection that could completely imitate someone's face. Making people disappear without alarming the authority is much easier that way. Inform Jack of what happened. He knows a lot about us. We will be in deep shit if he is captured."

Henry laughed. "He is an important part of the team. Of course, we can't let him be captured. He is responsible for putting security locks on doors, so we could access the rooms of the tenants. He is also responsible for the information technology of our team. Even if we put viruses on tenants' devices, we won't be able to access them without his help. By the way, the apartment cost quite a fortune. Can you still sell it?"

Felix smiled. "If money is just numbers for exonns, then so do our masters. They can also hunt, you know. What matters to them is the result. They could easily give us a large amount of money, then someone will whitewash that amount. We will have surgery to change our face. With healing magic, it will be a lot easier and faster to do that, then we will have a new identity and money. The federation is underestimating our masters too much. They too can learn and adopt. They could use the technology of our world for their own advantage."

"Hahahaha, we should be closer to getting a demon core."

"That's right. With me leading the team, we got better results. I'm sure I will quickly climb the ranks. Damn Heaven's Gate! It failed me, then I will let it see the consequence!"

On top of the container, Rhys was lying down. His eyes looked cold as he listened to the conversation between Felix and Henry. He thought,"I can't capture them yet. They should be going where they put the other victims. I will let them lead me to that location."

He moved up to the air when the truck was near the highway in Enberg City.

"Whitewashing? Changing the identity? They can even let someone enter a security company. They are very systematic. Those are not easy to do if no one is helping them inside the government. Who is it?" asked Rhys in his mind as he stared at the city of Enberg while he was deeply thinking.
