30 Chapter 30

Even the most arrogant researchers were aware of the limitations of their current understanding of the infection events. Many things still required observation, analysis, and exploration. Therefore, they weren't too surprised when incidents like this one occurred, involving unique sources of infection and the appearance of monsters.

Over the past year, the majority of them had become more receptive to supernatural phenomena. Now, even if someone told them that a group of infected individuals was playing football in the sky while riding brooms, they wouldn't find it strange.

However, this was limited to supernatural phenomena related to infections.

But what on earth was this aircraft?

The blurry footage of the black aircraft on the screen crushed the perspectives of all the relevant technical personnel and was nothing short of a mockery for experts in the field.

A few seconds later, when they saw that thing launch an ice missile and completely freeze the enormous monster into ice fragments with a loud crack, another person couldn't stay seated at the table.

"It's impossible!"

The speaker was Shi Jinqiang, the Minister of Equipment.

"No weapon can achieve such a freezing effect in such a short moment," the Minister firmly stated. "There is no technology like this in the world."

"But I saw it with my own eyes, just like the recorded footage," Luo Yajun said.

Shi Jinqiang didn't speak further; he only furrowed his brow and continued muttering in a low voice about how it was impossible and unscientific.

As the events unfolded, when they witnessed the bat-clad lunatic walking into the darkness of the storm, single-handedly bringing an end to everything, even though everyone present had already heard a brief account of what happened, many of them couldn't help but be moved when they saw it with their own eyes.

"Detective Luo, you mentioned earlier that you were affected even when you were close to the periphery of the storm?" Professor Miyazaki asked.

"Yes," Luo Yajun nodded. "It was one of the strongest sources of infection I've ever encountered. I have no idea what kind of effect it would have on me if I were to enter the center of that storm."

"Detective Luo's infection level is at 87%, which is already the highest among the regular agents at Bureau Nine. Additionally, his resistance to infection is remarkably strong. If the rampaging of that infection source even affected him, we can imagine its immense power," Professor Miyazaki said, displaying an expression of keen interest.

"And according to what you said, that bat-like creature was able to enter the center of the whirlwind alone and deal with the infection source by itself. This makes me curious about the extent of its infection as well. Perhaps it's a unique infected individual? It would make sense if they were completely immune to all forms of infection," he continued.

"I don't think so," Luo Yajun shook his head. He took out a silver-gray device and placed it on the meeting table.

"This is the specialized identification device developed by Professor Miyazaki for identifying unique individuals," Luo Yajun said.

Unlike ordinary infected individuals, the infection level of unique individuals cannot be directly measured by conventional testing devices. Only a comprehensive examination can determine the extent of their infection. Therefore, Professor Miyazaki developed this identification device specifically for detecting unique individuals.

However, the device is still in the experimental stage, with limited functionality, and has not been widely distributed as standard equipment for agents. It cannot measure the infection level of unique individuals, but it can distinguish between an ordinary person and a unique individual.

"During that time, I found an opportunity to scan the bat lunatic, and well, maybe you should see for yourself," Luo Yajun said.

Someone picked up the device from the table and handed it to Professor Miyazaki. He accepted it and activated the built-in display on the scanning device, studying it for a moment.

Then he let out a surprised voice.

"Wait. No, this can't be right," he raised his head, his expression appearing both peculiar and bewildered. "Did you scan the wrong person?"

"That was my initial reaction too. I even suspected that the thing was malfunctioning," Luo Yajun chuckled, seemingly satisfied that the professor shared a similar sense of astonishment as himself.

"But I can responsibly say that I didn't make any operational mistakes, and the device is functioning properly. The former can be verified by watching my recording, and the latter should be easy for you, Professor, to confirm by checking the device yourself."

Professor Miyazaki tinkered with the device and soon furrowed his brow tightly.

"There is indeed no mistake, but how can this be?" he muttered to himself. "This shouldn't be, and it's not possible. No one can do it, and no one should be able to."

"What's wrong, Professor Miyazaki?" someone couldn't help but ask.

Professor Miyazaki looked up, his gaze perplexing as it scanned everyone in the room.

"That bat-like creature, he appears to be an ordinary person," he said.

The conference room fell silent for a while.

"Wait, hold on," someone spoke up, "I didn't quite understand. Are you saying he's not a unique individual?"

"The readings indeed show that," Professor Miyazaki's expression also held some confusion.

The people in attendance exchanged puzzled looks, their expressions resembling those who had seen a ghost.

An ordinary person, enduring the immense mental pressure that even unique individuals might struggle to withstand, managed to eliminate the infection source?

"Perhaps he's an absolute unique individual?" someone asked tentatively.

"No. I considered that possibility when designing the identification device. Even if he were an absolute unique individual, this device would be able to identify him," Professor Miyazaki said with utmost confidence. "That person is definitely an ordinary person, without a doubt."

The person fell silent for a moment and then asked, "Is it reasonable for an ordinary person to withstand such intensity of infection pressure and eliminate the infection source?"

"Not only is it unreasonable, it's utterly impossible," Professor Miyazaki shook his head, his face displaying absurdity.

"Then what do you think is happening here?"

"You're asking me?" Professor Miyazaki rolled his eyes. "How the hell would I know?"

So, for a while, no one in the conference room spoke.

The reason why unique individuals are called unique individuals is because they possess a special constitution that resists infection. What makes an ordinary person capable of resisting the erosion of infection?

Observing the furrowed brows and contemplative expressions of everyone in the room, Luo Yajun smirked and let out a chuckle, as if finding it hard to contain his amusement.

Chairman Li Changcheng glanced at him and said, "Detective Luo, do you have any thoughts?"

"Well, I do," Luo Yajun chuckled. "But I'm afraid you'll scoff at it."

"Go ahead and speak," Li Changcheng said. "Everyone here is an authority in their respective fields, professionally trained. No matter how absurd it may sound, we won't be surprised."

"Is that so?" Luo Yajun put away his smile and spoke calmly, "Well, in my opinion, the reason he can resist infection is not due to any special abilities or constitution, but purely through sheer willpower."

"Willpower?" The experts were all stunned.

"Yes, willpower. A willpower far surpassing that of every person sitting here," Luo Yajun stated.

The expressions of everyone in the conference room became intriguing.

A mere mortal, relying on willpower to resist infection?

And against such a powerful source of infection?

Are you kidding?

All eyes turned to Professor Miyazaki, who was the most knowledgeable in this field. However, even he had an expression as if he had heard an incredible tale, finding the idea amusing.

"See, I told you, you wouldn't take it seriously," Luo Yajun shrugged. "You haven't seen him with your own eyes, so you may not understand. But let me tell you, I have a knack for reading people, and even through the costume and mask, I can see what kind of person he is."

"Oh?" Professor Miyazaki asked with great interest. "Then what do you think he is like?"

Luo Yajun took a deep breath and straightened his posture.

"A highly composed fanatic, an Avenger who is willing to sacrifice everything for unwavering beliefs, a lunatic," he said, pausing for a moment.

"And also a hero."
