6 Getting a sword

The next morning.

I got up a bit late because of the exhaustion from yesterday's quests. It's only been a day since I came to this world and surely, it was hard to get used to this weak body. It was weak for me because I've been someone who was many times stronger than a normal person. And being normal didn't fit in with me.

"It's the second day...it's all real then." I muttered softly. Actually, I've been hoping that this was all just a dream or an illusion before I went to bed last night. Although that world where I came from isn't so good, my one and only family, my grandpa was still there. So I hoped to be there by his side after waking up but...reality is never sweet.

"I wonder how that old man is doing. Even though he looks tough and strict, he still forgets to take his medicine on time. Will he be able to remember it without me there to remind him? I should have just not listened to him and hired some servants for him if I knew that I would die so early so that they could at least take care of him." My grandpa's face flashed in my mind, making me soften my cold eyes. He was the only person that I held precious and he was the only soft spot in my life, not even my parents.

My parents had lost their life when I was very small. Since then, I only had my grandpa with me. I'm only grateful to my parents for giving birth to me. Even though the world wasn't to my liking, I could at least spend my time with my grandpa.

"Grandpa..maybe I am not as cold as the world deemed me to be." I smiled bitterly to myself.

...

..

The sun was already up high in the sky, the busiest place in the city was bustling with activities as pedestrians walked around, hawkers hawked their goods and carriages passed through the streets.

I looked at the cheerfulness of the people through the window and finally got up from the bed.

"Let's take a bath before breakfast." I said to myself and went to take a bath.

I finished bathing in a few minutes and went downstairs to the guild bar but then again, I felt some gazes at me.

"Hey, who is that kid?"

"Huh...I don't know. Who is it?"

"Is that kid also an adventurer??"

"Must be. Or else how can he stay here when only adventurers are allowed to stay."

"I don't remember ever seeing him either."

I wondered if these people had nothing to do other than just gossip around in the bar. They even whisper so loud enough for me to hear or is it just me that had a keen hearing?

"A-are you Lucifer-san?" Mina saw me coming and asked with a dumbfounded face.

'Huh? Why is she acting like this? Is it so hard to recognise me in just a day?'

"Yes." I answered to her and she widened her eyes again.

"I almost couldn't recognise you at all! You look so different after changing from your previous appearance." Mina smiled at me and said.

"Do I really?" I murmured uninterestedly then walked to an empty seat on the bar and sat down.

"Oh, Lucifer-chan! You are up quite late today. Are you used to living here?" Amy came upto me and greeted me with her bright smile that I wasn't used to.

"Yes. I was quite exhausted so I only got up now." I replied back.

"I see. That's good. Have a good day then, I'll go back to my post. Come to me if you choose to do any quest today." Amy then waved at me and went to her work desk.

I ordered my breakfast that had a bread, a plate of fried rice and curry and a glass of juice. I ate my breakfast calmly as I felt the stares at me. I at least hoped to be left out from these stares when I'm eating.

"Hey..did you hear that? That kid is actually the one from yesterday."

"Yesterday? Who are you talking about? I wasn't here yesterday. I went to do some quest and came back just this morning."

"Oh right. Let me tell you. A kid registered as an adventurer. And it was actually a little girl who hadn't yet awakened her powers. But she was so lucky as to find the beloved cat of Amy-chan and earn 108 copper coins in just a day as an adventurer! That's something hard for a newbie to do, ya know?"

" What? Really?! That's some luck..."

"Anyway, that kid was unkempt and shabby before so I couldn't tell how she really looked but now that I look at her, she is quite a good looking little girl. Though she still looks a bit like a boy."

"Oi oi oi, are you actually into little girls or something? Hahaha."

"The hell are ya saying?! I was only telling you how different she looked now! I'm not that kind of a person, ya know?!"

I tried to lessen my senses of hearing as much as possible to have a peaceful meal but still heard their conversation clearly which made me want to check how I really looked like. I also didn't know how I looked like after becoming Lucifer since I didn't have any mirror to look at myself.

What I could tell was that I had bloody red eyes that shone like a fire, a short black hair and quite fair skin for someone who stayed in the slum.

I must've looked like a small boy because of my short hair and thin body.

Anyway, who cares.

..

...

I calmly finished my meal and went out of the guild bar. Today, I had only one thing in mind and that was to get myself a sword!

I had asked Mina for the direction to a smithy that sold some good but cheap swords so it wasn't hard to find the smithy.

It was quite secluded in a quiet place that was quite a distance from the bustling market. The shop was only one storey tall and was average in size. There was a board hung outside the door that read 'My smithy'.

I somehow felt like the shop owner was a no good narcissist after reading the shop's name. Who would even name it as such?

I got that thought out of my head and went inside the smithy. The bell rang after I opened the shop door but saw no one inside other than the weapons showcased everywhere inside the shop. I walked in and closed the door lightly then looked around the shop. It was quite big inside than how it looked from the outside.

There were many weapons such as swords, bows, spears, shields and many other types kept in the shelves. I could even tell that some of them were finely made, at least a high quality weapon.

Just as I looked around the shop, a voice interrupted me.

"What are you here for?" A bold and somewhat hoarse voice asked quite rudely. I turned towards the back of the shop and saw a...small old man with long beard and quite a big nose. Is this the race called dwarf?

"I'm here to buy a sword." I answered calmly even after hearing his rude question.

"A sword? You don't look like someone who can even lift one though. Are you really here for it?" The dwarf scoffed and asked again.

I felt my veins bulge out on my forehead.

'How dare he question my sword skills?!'

I didn't like it when someone looked down upon me. Someone as prideful as me when it came to martial arts and my sword skills could take any insults upon me but not upon my ability.

"Old man, haven't you heard the saying, 'don't judge a book by its cover'? Just because I look weak doesn't mean I am weak." I said as I narrowed my eyes at him.

"I haven't and don't want to either. Someone as small and weak as you can't lift a sword even with all your strength. Hmph." The dwarf harrumphed and said.

"Who is the small one here? Tch." I clicked my tongue at him and retorted back.

"What did you say?! Say it again!" The dwarf looked me angrily and shouted.

"I said who is the small one here." I replied calmly after seeing him so angry just from this. Heh, serves him right.

"You brat! How could you speak to your elder like this?!" The dwarf nearly jumped up and down in anger as he shouted at me.

"What? Do you want me to come and serve you tea then? I'm only here to buy a sword. If you don't want me to speak like this then quickly sell me a sword. I'll go away after that." I said in an indifferent way.

"Grr. You aren't likeable at all! Such a rebellious brat. Fine! What kind of sword do you want? Just don't complain to me if you cannot lift any at all!" The dwarf said in a huff.

"Just look at yourself first before you speak." I murmured.

"What did you say?" He asked with narrowed eyes.

"I said show me some good quality sword that is cheap in price." I said without batting an eye.

"Hmph, follow me." He didn't say anything more and went towards some shelves that had swords of different designs and qualities showcased. Some were sheathed while some weren't. I was quite impressed by the intricate work on them and looked around them carefully.

"The swords kept here are all very good in quality and are very sharp. They only cost under 60 copper coins. You can choose from them. Just make sure that you won't drop them because you couldn't lift them." He still added some rude comments after showing me the swords.

I ignored his last sentence and looked at the swords then fiddled around with them. I finally managed to find a sword of my liking. It was a simple looking one-handed long sword. But it was sharp and weighed light in my hands but didn't lose any strength in the swings.

It was a good sword!

"I'll take this. How much is it?" I asked after making another swing then sheathed the sword in its scabbard.

"Ho.. You could actually lift one huh. Not bad for someone who looks so weak as you. It'll be 30 copper coins for ya, brat." The dwarf looked at me with amazement in his eyes but still had a prideful exterior in front of me.

30 copper coins wasn't so bad of a price. I would still have some money left which is enough for now.

" Okay. Here you go." I took out my pouch and gave him 30 copper coins. I wanted to bargain but this sword indeed deserved the price so I let it be.

"You better get lost now that you've got your sword, brat." The dwarf took the money and said.

"Yeah yeah. You don't have to tell me. Goodbye, old man." I took the sword and walked out of the smithy.

I looked at the sword in satisfaction and smiled.

"I finally can practice my sword skills. I only got one day to go for the knights recruitment so I got to prepare for it well." I said to myself as I hung the sword on my waist.

"Take it as I'm already done preparing." I smiled confidently.
