Chapter 11

Night, the time of day when human souls indulge in their vices. It's a time when the streets are filled with rabble that wouldn't mind killing, robbing, or raping someone. But it's also the time when people like me, who prefer to hide their identity, go hunting.

No, I'm not an altruistic hero who wants to do good in the world. I'm more of an anti-hero. After all, I don't go out hunting just to catch scum. No, they serve as training targets for me to hone my skills. But the most important reason was that there was a high probability of running into Gwen.

After once again waiting for Aunt May to fall asleep, I climbed out my window and then flew to the most crime-ridden areas of the city.

Fifteen minutes into the journey and I stumble upon the first group of vandals. Five guys dressed in a "don't mess with me" kind of way, stupid hairstyles, tattoos, alcohol, and of course the usual attribute, pieces of steel rebar. The whole thing screamed that they were not here to party. Which I confirmed pretty quickly when they started knocking over rubbish bins and doing all sorts of other horrible shit.

These socially useless individuals were well suited for my purposes, so I jumped down from the roof I was watching them from and landed beside them, blocking their path.

- Hey girls, what are we doing out in the back alleys instead of sleeping? Aren't you afraid that some evil man will hurt you? - I said sarcastically.

- Who the hell are you? - said one of them, throwing a rebar on his shoulder, while the others started to take me in a ring.

- Me? - I pointed my finger at myself, - I am the "evil uncle"!

Saying these words, I jumped towards the first one with a sharp jump, and charged at his jaw with my fist. As soon as my fist collided with it, there was a nasty crunch of bones that characterised a serious fracture.

The guy, who hadn't expected the attack, flew six metres away, and then rolled around on the dirty asphalt for a couple more, not showing any signs of life.

- FUCK! HE KNOCKED JOHN OUT! KICK HIM! - There was a shriek from behind me, and then with my incredibly heightened senses, I realised that a blow was coming towards my head.

Abruptly sitting up, I dodged it, and the guy who swung too hard was unable to stabilise because of the miss. So his carcass started flying towards me.

A blow to the stomach, and the next moment he was on his knees, where he received a kick to the head.

Two of the five "gangsters" were quickly defeated, and the remaining three, who had apparently never faced an opponent stronger than they were, froze in fear.

- Attack girls, don't make me disappointed in you even more. - I said mockingly.

- AAAAAH, I'LL KILL YOU! - one of them couldn't stand it, and ran towards me swinging a steel rebar.

I jumped at him and grabbed his hand by the wrist and squeezed it hard.

Another nasty crunch and another fracture, but accompanied by a scream of agony.

It stopped abruptly, however, as a blow to the head does a pretty good job of anaesthetising people.

The remaining two were already running headlong away. Taking a piece of metal from the ground, I threw it at the legs of one of them, breaking them. I caught the other one with a web behind his back and yanked him towards me.

The unsuspecting guy with a shriek flew straight at me, where in the air he received a blow to the stomach, and then rolled his eyes and lost consciousness.

I didn't kill the last one, because someone should find them and call an ambulance. And painful screams will help to do it faster.

Finished with this group, I flew up on the web again and started looking for Gwen and the next offenders of order. But unfortunately, two hours of my search was in vain, so seeing that it was getting late I decided to go back home...

Morning, Midtown School of Science and Technology.

As soon as I passed through the school gate, I noticed a changed atmosphere in the air.

Many students were greeting me in a friendly manner, which was not typical of them at all. Deciding to ignore the action, I walked to my locker to grab my school supplies. As soon as I opened it, a few dozen envelopes with hearts sprinkled out.

- "Are you serious? Confession letters?". - I looked sceptically at the pile, which reeked of feminine perfume. Not knowing what to do with it all, I just stacked them aside, and then taking what I needed, headed to class.

The classroom wasn't quiet either. As soon as I got to my seat, everyone started greeting me with even more enthusiasm than before, and it made me tired, but I couldn't respond to their friendliness with rudeness, so I just had to smile back.

 - Hello Peter! - came the ringing voice of my classmate as I unpacked my things.

- Yeah, hi to you too, Liz. - The reply came off my lips as I recognised her voice, and only then did I raise my head and look at her.

- Hmm, what are you so glum about? - she grinned, sitting down on the edge of my desk.

- Hmm, how could I be otherwise? I don't know what's gotten into everyone today, but by the time I got here, my jaw was tired from greeting everyone I meet. I'm not used to that, and it's mentally exhausted me. - I shook my head bitterly.

- Well, you'll have to get used to it now. You're the school celebrity. - Liz grinned.

- Famous? Why would I be? I don't think being captain of the football team is that honourable. And besides, it's not supposed to be announced until the end of the day. - I gave her a sceptical look.

- You don't know how honourable it is. But that's not the point, not yet. - The girl smiled mysteriously.

- Yeah? What is it? Don't drag it out, I'm exhausted as it is, and I don't have the energy for speculation.

- Well, I'll say this. Yesterday, during your fight with Flash, someone videotaped the whole thing and put it on the net. It went viral, so now you're the school's number one star. Because you beat up the most troubled guy in the school. And when everyone finds out what kind of job you got, your quiet money's on the line.

- God, what I signed up for. I don't know why that jerk was bothering me. - I grinned wryly, which got a chuckle from Liz.

- All right star, get used to your new life changes, and I'll start getting ready for class. Everything I wanted to say, I've said. - Liz got up from my desk and started to walk away, leaving a sweet perfume trail behind her.....
