16 Wild Wolves (3)

While running, Devin would at times, feel chills shivering him down to his spine. Every time he did, he would suddenly shift his body which caused the Wild Wolves who were coming to attack him, miss their attacks.

Devin noticed that despite the fact that the Wild Wolves, who while having a higher AGI stat than him, had their attacks detected by the new skill that he had named <Danger Perception> while he was running.

Funny as it may seem, it appears that ever since joining the game, Devin was bound to be chased by monsters. He could only curse his bad luck as he continues to increase the distance between Sleeping Beauty and the NPC while getting the Wild Wolves in tow.

Despite feeling tired, he still kept running, he didn't forget to also look back from time to time. Slowly judging their distances while maintaining his full health bar and seeing that it was only the Wild Wolves left on his back, Devin felt that he could no longer outrun these monsters. Their speed was far surpassing his. It was only a matter of time before they completely overtake him then surround him when the gap made by his <Haste> skill was reached. So, he decided to make a last stand especially since he knew that the moment when Sleeping Beauty takes the NPC to the city he would've accomplished his quest. Even if he dies here, he will still have the last laugh.

After coming into an abrupt stop, Devin once again counted his pursuers, only to be surprised to see that they had instead increased from the previous six to the now large number of twelve. They had doubled. This immediately gave him a bad premonition, but there was nothing he could do about that now. He shrugged it off and faced the Wild Wolves who had now learned their lesson and was surrounding him in a complete circular formation.

"So, you stupid mobs want a piece of me?"

With a brave bravado, Devin taunted the Wild Wolf who appeared to be the leader of the pack.

"Foolish spawn of man, How dare you speak to me with your dirty tongue?"

"What th-"

Devin almost dropped his staff when he saw how the wolf spoke to him. For a brief moment there, he had almost forgotten the fact that he was playing a game.

"Y-you... You can talk?"

Even though Devin wasn't afraid of dying. He still decided to try his luck by making conversation with the monster, if it didn't work then he could only blame his bad luck, but if ever did work then he would've successfully stalled for time, it was just a couple of minutes left before the cooldown for his <Leap> skill to tick down and be usable again.

He intended to burst them by activating all his skills at the last moment after using his <Leap> skill as a gap closer and make his last hurrah by at least killing one monster before he dies.

The monster who previously had a red color on its name tag suddenly turned yellow. Its eyes shined as it looked at Devin's eyes.

"Spawn of man, why do you hinder me from saving my child?"

Puzzled, Devin tilted his head and answered the Wild Wolf.

"I don't know what you are talking about. That man claimed that you ambushed them after they drove off the bandits. So I was just helping him return to the city safely."

Devin summarized everything that had happened. He made it seem like he was a neutral party. This proved to be a wise choice as the Wild Wolf would've unhesitatingly killed him when he positioned himself alongside the NPC.

"That is wrong, that man... He brought with him his men as he slowly destroyed our village. They even detestably stole our cubs.

Oh.. and those bandits that he speaks off, they are the tribe who had sworn to protect this forest and its inhabitants. Not only did they trespass this forbidden land, they even dared to kill my people. If only I wasn't gravely injured then-"

The Wild Wolf was seething in anger slowly crept towards Devin's face and snorted hot air through its nose. Its eyes turned bloodshot as its body moved in a steady rhythm with heavy breaths, it growled. It couldn't even complete its sentence due to the strong emotions that it was feeling. Its wrath could even be visibly seen on its name tag as it slowly flickered from red to yellow and vice versa.

"I seek revenge. Spawn of man, I will give you a chance. I will let you go for now, but I want you to find that who desecrated these lands."

"Find him? Is that all? Don't you want to kill him to get some revenge or anything?"

"Do not test me spawn of man. I will be the one to exact revenge. I have already made a mark on you. As long as you stand in front of him within arms reach, that is all I ask of you."

Devin gulped as he was also feeling afraid and nervous and as soon as the Wild Wolf finished narrating its story, Devin once again heard a notification from the system.

<Warning! You have learned of the plight of the forest dwellers. Due to your previous quest contradicting the recent quest you may choose to decline this new quest. If accepted, then the previous quest would be discarded and replaced by the new quest.>

Being put in a tight spot, Devin didn't hesitate for a long time. He immediately accepted the quest. From the moment that he saw the NPC he already know that it was acting fishy. Of course, Devin wasn't accepting this quest because he is a warrior of justice or anything like that, he accepted it just as any sane person in his place would.

Would anyone even dare decline this quest in front of an angry monster standing in front of him? Well, he certainly wouldn't so he was half coerced into accepting this.
