15 Wild Wolves (2)

This is bad, Devin thought to himself. Another Wild Wolf pounced towards the NPC. This time, Devin was prepared. He held his staff with a firm grasp and used it to whack the head of the incoming wolf. His attack had managed to stun the wolf while it was in midair. The attack had caught it off-guard as it once again retreated to the bushes when it came to its senses. In this situation, it was easy to see that these wolves were only targeting the NPC. It was then when Devin had an idea.

He took the NPC alongside Sleeping Beauty and immediately rushed towards the nearest tree. The tree was about 8 meters away from them. Aside from the fact that it was night time which made them handicapped due to the fact that their surroundings were dark, they were also surrounded by bushes and thick greenery which further hindered their vision on the Wild Wolves.

Despite only relying on the bright moonlight, Devin could still somehow grasp his surroundings. It was as if he could just sense it without having any vision. Well, he was blind ever since he was born and although his father opted for an eye surgery that has a statistically high chance of being successful, his just wasn't.

There had been many kinds of research about this topic and based on their findings, it was indeed proven true that blind people have better other senses. For instance, the part of the brain called the Visual Cortex is one of the areas responsible for processing visual information, and in blind people, the visual cortex gets a bit bored. This is because without any form of visual input it starts to rewire itself by becoming more responsive to information from the other remaining senses. So blind people may have lost their vision, but this leaves a larger brain capacity for processing the information from other senses and although the brain can reorganize itself at any point in life, it is during childhood that the brain is more adaptable to change. This is because during childhood the brain is still developing and the new organization of the brain does not have to compete with an existing one. As a result, people who have been blind from a very early age show a much greater level of reorganization in the brain.

However, after doing the clinical tests for the Virtual Reality Pods, his brain that was mainly receiving inputs from his other senses had finally awakened to visual stimulation. This caused it to reorganize itself which created dissonance with his virtual self that caused a gap between him and his avatar. Thus, this has hindered him from having a complete synchronization with his virtual avatar. However, this was also noticed by the lab experts that noticed that the longer the brain was exposed to the

visual inputs, the higher its synchronization rate increased.

Similarly, after playing the game for a longer period of time, his brain had once more completed warming up and was now in complete sync. As of now, Devin was now feeling the sensation that he had once felt in the lab during the clinical trials. It was a feeling of having incomparably heightened senses.

Now, back to Devin's current predicament, while running towards the tree, he felt that he could predict where and when the next Wild Wolf would be attacking from solely based on the noises that they make.

"LEFT! 2 WOLVES!"

After shouting so, he dragged the NPC towards the right, this time Sleeping Beauty wasn't able to turn sideways in time and was caught up in the attack. Thankfully she had managed to magnificently dodge the attacks just by twisting her body in an S like shape.

Before she was able to heave a sigh of relief, she immediately heard Devin shout once more.

"1 WOLF ON THE RIGHT!"

This time she managed to quickly change her direction and had avoided the attack. After running for a while, they eventually reached the tree. As soon as Devin and the NPC arrived, he pushed the NPC up the tree. Puzzled, Sleeping could only think about Devin's idea as she also helped the NPC onto a branch.

As soon as Delo got to climb on top of the tree, six Wild Wolves suddenly showed themselves from the thickets. Growling and looking at their prey, they formed a crescent formation surrounding the tree.

Sleeping Beauty who was previously clueless as to what Devin was trying to do, finally got a gist of his plan from looking at their current situation. The monsters' eyes were solely placed on the NPC. This means that if the NPC could successfully kite the monsters out, then they can just do the DPS safely. That is only the case if they can continuously keep them from ever touching the NPC. Because their quest stated that the NPC must be escorted to the city SAFELY and both of them don't want to take any chances.

Devin who made eye contact with Sleeping Beauty nodded and gently asked for her to take care of any Wild Wolves that ever get past him. Sleeping was still unaware of the show that was about to unfold in front of her. Meanwhile, Devin who had just reached high sensitivity has received another series of notifications from the system.

Devin immediately dismissed it and focused on the task at hand. In front of him were six Wild Wolves that were nearly the size of a man. He grabbed his wooden staff with his right hand. The feeling of holding one large stick wasn't that strange to him as he was used to walking with a stick every time he goes out.

His left hand was stretched and was wielding the old freebie dagger that he received at the very start. He looked at one particular Wild Wolf. It appeared to be different from the others as it has a horn protruding from its forehead. That wolf soon howled and three Wild Wolves dashed madly towards the tree from three different angles.

Devin quickly activated his <Leap> and arrived in front of the Horned Wolf and bashed its face with his staff. It cried out as it was feeling shame from being hit by a measly human.

The dashing wolves heard it and with great ferociousness, charged at Devin. He had successfully aggroed the whole pack of Wild Wolves. This time, activating <Haste> Devin madly dashed away from Sleeping Beauty and the NPC.

He figured out that fighting the wolves wasn't going to be advantageous to them, and by properly organizing his thoughts he remembered the NPC told him that his previous escorts could only lure these wolves away.

"Sleeping, take the NPC to the city, quick! I'll follow you once, I lost the monsters."

Sleeping Beauty who heard his order quickly took the NPC directly opposite to where Devin was luring the Wild Wolves.
