1 The Awakening

Harry Potter: Salazar's Heir

Chapter One: The Awakening

"For I'm a thinking cap!"

The entire hallroom exploded in applause, awes and cheers, the excitement echoing throughout the room as the hat finished its song was booming.

"I am going to kill Fred." Ron muttered, both ashamed and angry. "He said we had to wrestle a troll."

Harry smiled weakly as he heard that. He knew he wasn't strong enough to stand before a troll, much less fight it. So, putting on the hat seemed like the far better option to him.

"I guess." Harry said in a low voice, not too confident about the hat either.

'I just wish it was not in the public.' He did not feel confident enough to walk in front of such a big crowd and neither did he feel like answering the dozen of questions that the hat asked.

Sadly, there was no other choice.

As the moment the hat finished its song, one of the female professors walked forward.

She had graying hair with a witch hat covering most of it. Fixing her glasses and clearing her throat –she announced.

"When I call your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted," she said. "Abbott, Hannah!"

Harry took a breath of relief at not being the first one to be called.

"I read that they call you alphabetically," Hermione whispered, "So if your surname starts with a Z, you will be one of the last to be called."

'Middle.' Harry believed that was the sweet spot.

Not the first, not the last but in the middle.

Standing up and awkwardly walking towards the hat was a pink faced girl with blonde pigtails. She kept her eyes fixated on the floor, possibly feeling embarrassed by all the stares burning holes at her back.

And Harry could relate to her. The moment he entered this magical world, people have been staring at him and all that did for him was to make him uncomfortable.

Harry, Ron and Hermoine, the trio that became quite close in the short train ride, looked at the sorting process intently.

They saw the hat being placed over the girl's head and it falling over her eyes –quite big for her small frame.

"They didn't consider the student sizes–"

As he said that, he got an elbow to his stomach from the curly haired girl.

"Shut up and look." Hermione said, not appreciating the distractions.

They saw the hat whispering something to the girl and the girl answering in an inaudible voice.

"Can it not talk inside your mind?" Harry asked.

"I read that it can," Hermoine answered just as quickly. "But I think the girl does not know about it so the hat is not bothered either."

Harry went quiet, nodding at the possibility.

"HUFFLEPUFF!" After about a minute, the hat shouted, enticing loud whistles, cheers and applause from the table at the right.

"Bones, Susan!" The professor called out, followed by the same process of a girl walking towards the podium and putting on the hat.

And once again the hat was too big for the little girl's head.

"They really need to fix this." Ron said, resulting in a death stare from Hermoine. "What? I am just pointing out the obvious."

"HUFFLEPUFF!" shouted the hat again, and Susan scuttled off to sit next to Hannah, causing another eruption of cheers.

"Two in a row, wow." Ron was amazed.

"They are sorted according to their personality, and the kind hearted, friendly and honest ones goes to Hufflepuff." Hermione explained the requirements of being sorted into Hufflepuff. "Of course, I don't know the exact requirements but these were the ones stated in the book."

And yes, they were indeed explained in the introductory book which neither Harry nor Ron bothered to go through.

Which obviously had to do with the lack of pictures and the sheer size of the book.

"Boot, Terry!"

"RAVENCLAW!"

One by one the students walked towards the hat and were sorted according to their personality traits.

"The smart, quiet, curious and studious ones go to Ravenclaw," Hermione explained, making Ron grin.

"Then you are definitely going there." Ron said, resulting in another elbow to the stomach.

Seeing this, Harry understood that it was not a good idea to get into Hermoine's bad side.

The one following Terry Boot went to Ravenclaw as well and it was not until Lavender Brown that the Gryffindor house got a new student.

"The brave, loyal and the chivalrous go to Gryffindor," Hermoine looked at Ron, "Which means you are definitely not going there." She said, biting back at the ginger.

However, Ron did not get angry, instead he was scared.

"D-Don't say that!" He said, "I am not studious enough to be in Ravenclaw and I am not that outgoing for Hufflepuff."

He had a terrified look, "So, if I don't get into Gryffindor, it will be Slytherin and that is a big no!"

Harry was curious hearing this, "Why not Slytherin?"

Ron looked at him as if he was dumb, "Because every evil wizard goes there." He said, "Almost all the dark wizards have been from Slytherin."

"Oh…"

This made Harry a little worried about possibly being sorted into Slytherin. Not because he was evil, but he just didn't want to be classified as a bad person.

And as they talked about Slytherin, the first Slytherin student was sorted.

"Bulstrode, Millicent."

"Slytherin!" The hat shouted.

And after a few more names, finally it was time for one of them to get sorted.

"Granger, Hermione!"

Hermione almost ran to the chair and jammed the hat eagerly on her head.

"GRYFFINDOR!" shouted the hat, making Ron groan.

"She should have been in Ravenclaw…"

He wasn't very happy at her being in Gryffindor, but then again, there was not much that he could do about it.

But finally, it was Harry's turn.

"Potter, Harry!"

As Harry stepped forward, whispers suddenly broke out like little hissing fires all over the hall.

"Potter, did she say?"

"The Harry Potter?"

Harry did not enjoy this attention even one bit, but there was barely anything he could do about it.

'Let's just get this over with…' He told himself. 'They will forget about me soon.'

Harry sat on the chair with his hands gripping one another. He had one single thought in his head.

'Anything but Slytherin, please!'

He did not want to be classified as a bad guy and for that, he was even willing to be active and go with Hufflepuff.

But just as the professor was about to put the hat over his head –he felt a sharp sting around his forehead, instantly making him tear open his eyes.

He huffed heavily, as he felt a strong wave hit him. He jerked back, and saw the professors having the same look alongside a few senior students.

The new ones didn't feel anything and appeared confused at the sudden pause.

Harry looked at the professors and saw them staring at the headmaster with wide eyes. And the headmaster looked just as surprised as them.

"Students!" Taking a second, the headmaster yelled, "We will be taking a break here and will continue after a moment! Till then you may enjoy the food and the music!"

Quite a lot of the students were happy hearing this, but most were surprised as there were barely a few students left to be sorted and so it did not make much sense to stop now.

And Harry was no less, he could not understand why they stopped right during his turn. If anything, this got him worried about his sorting even more.

However, as the female professor walked towards the headmaster with the hat in her hand –he heard her mutter.

"How… How can this magic exist in this era?"

And that was all Harry heard before he was asked to walk back to his table.

Leaving him curious.

[Somewhere in Malham Cove]

"H-How!"

"What did you do, Joshua!" A blonde boy yelled at his friend, feeling a thick aura of magic surrounding them. It made the boys feel extremely uncomfortable.

"I didn't do anything!" The brown haired boy replied, equally shouting. "I just casted the Lumos charm!"

The moment the Lumos charm, a charm that forms a light source was casted –the cave that they were in was surrounded by a dark magical energy –magic that nearly suffocated them.

"By Merlin, Joshua!" The blonde shouted, "I told you it was a bad idea to walk into this dark cave!"

But to the horror of the boys, their situation only worsened when they heard a certain voice echo.

"Too… loud…"

It was a boy's voice, not much older, maybe even younger then them.

"W-Who is it!" Joshua shouted, making the voice even more annoyed.

"So… unpleasant…"

"Who–"

And the boys should have listened, as the moment they shouted again, they were hit by a spell.

"Silencio."

Which immediately took away their ability to talk. They boys could only shudder in fear as a pair of green eyes glowed in the dark.

"I told you… to shut up."

And that's all they heard before their mouths foamed and they fainted from fear –soiling their pants in the process.

"How…" The voice sounded disgusted. "unsightly."

It echoed, sounding both disgusted and confused.

"Is this how… this generation acts?"

Unknown to the boys, they had awakened a certain boy.

A boy that should not exist in this era.

"But it…" He smiled a little, "Feels good to be able to move again."

A boy that could either be the greatest boon or the worst curse for this world.

And it was all for him to decide.

Which side he was going to take.
