Duel!

The following Friday, Sebastian, like every other first year student, found himself in a large room with several environments. A dirt plateau, grassland with small hills, a forest, urban area, and many more.

"Welcome, everyone.", their former 'Extensive Battle Charms' professor greeted the first years. Again, he did not actually introduce himself, but just talked about his background and his reason for being here. He was going to be their Combat teacher. Different from the other classes, they would only have few theoretical parts. Most of this class was going to be combat simulations.

There would be intricate missions, just some one versus ones or even group fights, made to prepare them for combat and hone basic skills. The students already learned dodging but using it in an actual fight was going to be different.

"Today, I will explain the basics for the real life and our current simulations.", the professor started. "In the real life, you aren't always out to kill someone. Most of the time, we just aim to detain a target. Here, we will simulate, but do not be mistaken, some lethal spells will be allowed, but you will be receiving armour, fit to defend against the allowed spells and their current strength. If you were stronger, that would be difficult."

He went on to talk about how dangerous the real life was, where Sebastian fully agreed, and always repeated, that this was no game. Honestly, Sebastian did not understand how they wanted eleven-year-old children into murderers and combat units, but as of now, it worked. Even he, who grew up in the modern world and in total safety, without magic, felt inclined to continue down this path and become a strong fighter. To even become a killer and murderer, like he already was.

Sebastian was put against another boy from his year, Theo, he was very talented, and his family talent was well known by every student. He was a bit of an ass and thought himself to be better that everyone else, though once, a teacher straight up told him that his talent couldn't hold any candle against Sebastian. His family talent stemmed from the time of the Vikings, where Theo's family were leaders of a tribe, which stood strong against any attacks, or at least that was what the rumors said. He had a great control over fusions of water and wind, even possessing a few ancient family spells, that were based on a rune language as incantation instead of Latin.

The ginger looked awfully sure and full of himself, not realizing that Sebastian had a lot of skill too.

"Heh, Sebastian. Do you think they'll send you back after losing like a small girl? You were lucky to be allowed to come even though you failed.", the guy said and laughed in Sebastians face, who was once again reaffirmed that this guy was a dumb piece of shit and annoying like Draco in Harry Potter.

"Oh, shut up you twat. The only reason you are here is because we are strong enough to look at your ugly face. Not even a mother could love someone as ugly as you.", Sebastian shot back. He had learned that the best way to deal with people like Theo was to stand strong and insult them like the piece of shit they were.

"Okay, okay. That is enough. Go over there.", the professor intervened and sent them to a small arena, depicting a large barn commonly found on a farm.

"Ready yourselves. 3, 2, 1, fight!", the professor shouted, and Sebastian dashed behind a tractor, while Theo shot a silent stunner at him. He wasn't weak either.

Rotating his staff, Sebastian created an oval shield over his torso, to protect against weaker spells that might slip his defences.

Sebastian walked backwards, getting away from the tractor and walking towards the barns entrance to have a better cover behind the walls.

"#*+*++!", Sebastian heard Theo shout, and saw a one-by-one meters wall of wind and water rush towards him. Creating a solid shield of earth in front of him, he sent a timed bombarda into the wind, making the shield burst and dissipate. Sebastian then followed up by creating two flaming arrows, sending them at a stack of hay he knew Theo was hiding behind. After that, he sent a curved reductor into the sky, following it up by a shield breaker, stunner and a faster cutting curse towards Theo.

The hay exploded, but Theo had hidden behind a wall of stone.

The reductor swished down from the sky, hitting the stone shield and destroying it. Theo was surprised but saw the fast cutting curse coming towards him. They had learned that a half physical-spell shield was the best, which was why Sebastian wasn't surprised when he heard Theo shout, "Protego Duo!".

The cutting charm dissipated on the shield, but the overpowered shield-breaker followed right after, obliterating the shield. Theo was barely able to throw himself to the side to dodge the stunner but managed to throw a disarmer at Sebastin while falling.

Sebastian settled on sending the spell back and raised his staff straight, chanting "Protego reflectum!". A milky white and square shield appeared in front of Sebastian who manipulated it to reflect straight back at Theo, while he continued casting.

"Cratos! Diffindo!", Sebastian seemingly moved his staff in a random way to start the next spell, but in fact cast a silent and invisible stunner into the sky and continued afterwards, "Orbis!", followed by another shield-breaker.

Theo reacted by dodging cratos, which was a new spell, able to create a physical push which also worked on any shield, if it wasn't strong enough, and cast another protego duo along with a small dirt wall, which Sebastian had anticipated. The shield breaker destroyed the shield and orbis pulled the dirt wall to the ground, making Theo visible, who had anticipated this as well, lying on the ground.

Two spells, a silent cutter along with a highly compressed jet or swirling water, gradually fanning out, flew at Sebatian, who dodged the cutter by jumping far to the right, as the wood wouldn't protect him. The problem was the spiral of fast, rotating water jets. They wouldn't be strong enough to destroy a strong shiel, but his protego was not strong enough against physical attacks. Therefore, the opted to cast 'Incendium Barricade'. The spell hadn't worked until now, but the pressure made Sebatian stop thinking and just cast the spell, intuitively creating a intent do create a fiery yet solid barricade in front of him.

"Incendium Barricade", Sebastian cast and it worked, though by far not as strong as the one shown by his fire instructor. Sebastian reacted in a split second, opting his magic to push into the flames, making them stronger, hotter. The flames turned a shade of blue, showing their heat, and vaporized the nearing water. The included wind partially disrupted the spell and forcefully hit Sebastian, hurting a little bit, when it hit somewhere different from his torso, but the dangerous water was gone.

After a second, the opposing spell had fully dissipated, and Sebastian was able stop the barricade while huffing a bit. The barricade really drained him, especially the part where he made them hotter. He still did not understand how he did it, but it worked.

[A/N: Any guesses?]

When he looked at Theo, ready to cast a spell at any sign of danger, he saw Theo knocked out on the ground, his strategy had worked and Sebastian began smiling, because he knew that he did not even use two of his strongest single target spells and at least five other spells he could cast, that could have been useful in the situation, though he was not able to cast them chantless. But he should not get too overconfident, as he wasn't able to cast one of the stronger spells half of the time and it wasn't very strong yet. And some of the other spells weren't that strong yet either. Still, he had won, that's all that mattered.

"Clap, Clap.", the professor began clapping and the others, that weren't currently fighting began to clap as well. Sebastian, still smiling, turned to the others, still able to see a hint of a dangerous glint disappear from the professor's eyes, only to be replaced by a smile.

"Well done, Sebastian. You used clever tactics, delayed spells, curved spells, faster spells, overpowered spells, and a very difficult spell at the end. I haven't had a student in the first year, coming even close to you in term of skill and talent. I am sure, that you would have defeated almost all other students in the first exchange, but Theo is very talented in defense and his family talent is also very helpful in dodging and defending.", the professor praised Sebastian.

[Theo is the strongest student of their year in terms of defence and dodging. His family talent also lets him feel nearby spells in the air.]

"I think, it is long due to give you a gift for your fast progress, like we should, considering your talent. Please come with me to my office after class.", the professor said and went to rennervate Theo, leaving Sebastian to talk with the others.
