9 8. First Assassination Mission

It was two weeks later that we received our first mission.

Melvin's mechanical messenger bird arrived by the window and dropped the scroll tightly clutched in its beak infront of us.

Seraph picked it up, unfurled it and began reading it out aloud.

"Abyss City. Minister Eldreich. Needed dead before his departure from the city two days from now.

Eldreich is a Dragonborn. Identifying features: Hazel brown eyes, a small brown beard, canary yellow scales, doesn't travel anywhere without his gold adorned carriage, doesn't need it but always walks with a metal cane in one hand which is suspected to be a magical weapon.

Reward: 200 copper coins."

A Dragonborn on the first mission? I didn't know what the difficulty level of this was but it was about time I continued my job of collecting samples for the Kaiju System.

Not soon after sending the bird off we packed our uniforms, books and my daggers, and left in a carriage for Abyss City. It was the closest city to Wingbeat and only a few hours on carriage.

'Kaiju, status.'

'Taeyang Kim

Kaijufication initiated.'

'Kaiju, no need to show the Blood Type from now on.'

'Order acknowledged.'

The few hours were spent in silence, she completely absorbed in her book and me completely lost in my thoughts.

I was looking forward to this mission, since coming here I hadn't really fought any creature of this world. The Sentry was mostly Seraph's efforts, although during the two weeks prior to the mission I did spend some time training with her and had a little idea of what it was like fighting someone from here.

Was Dr. Jisoo looking forward to our date just as much as I was? Ten years didn't sound like much at that time, but now it did. A lot can happen in 10 yrs even if I survive it all, I could completely change as a person, she could completely change as a person.

But most importantly, I was afraid of getting attached to this lawless world where I could always have the thrill of fighting something stronger. And worse, I was afraid of getting attached to a specific pale pink-eyed mermaid.

I pulled out my Cloud Daggers. They were a beautiful design. Slightly wavy at the tips, with black hilts that had blue lines engraved throughout them. There were even some small diagrams drawn upon their blades.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abyss City wasn't much different from Wingbeat, save for the fancier shops, inns and restaurants. The species that could be seen here weren't as varied as the city we came from, but they were definitely a new one that I got to see. Goblins. Lots of them.

There were red ones, green ones and even yellow ones. What I didn't expect to see was that they dressed well regardless of the profession they were in.

Not too later after arriving, we were perched on top of a large restaurant, it's slanting roofs providing the perfect place to lay down and sleep. Although currently we didn't have time for that.

Minister Eldreich's carriage had just passed by and we were watching it's destination since running across rooftops in broad daylight would be too eye catching.

"Do we know anything about a Dragonborn's weakness?" I finally turned to Seraph.

"Perhaps water magic but neither of us is capable of that. You only recently started learning magic and I've never practiced it in order to master fire magic."

She had a reason for doing so. In case Undine, the Chief of her tribe ever came after her, she'd atleast have an elemental advantage over her, provided she could use more mana from the atmosphere than Undine.

We did come up with a plan eventually. A strategy that I had studied in military school and which Seraph tweaked a little to accomodate for a fight that involved magic in place of guns.
