Dream? Or not?

James and Mira sat across from each other. Unlike other times when they were probably playing games or arguing, they were quiet. Just staring ahead blankly.

They both had no idea where Mia had gone to. Sometimes, when she was very stressed, sad, or weak, she disappeared and didn't return until the next day. All efforts to find out where she was hiding always proved futile. They knew when it happened like this, she usually turned off her phone, but they still tried calling again. Over and over again.

"You should stop calling." With a sad sigh, James told Mira. "If she wanted our company, she wouldn't leave here every time she feels down."

"I feel so bad for her. Mia is so nice. How... how can they continue to hurt her without remorse? She doesn't deserve it."

"I also cannot stop feeling bad for the baby. She looked too innocent. Why did God have to bless people like that with children? They cannot even take care of the kids in the first place!" James said angrily.

"Why did that stupid girl even have the kid in the first place?!" Mira yelled, slapping her hand on the glass table. "Mary is capable of doing anything. Maybe she isn't even the mother of the child. She could have simply picked up the baby just to ruin Mia's life, for all we know."

"But... is it okay to leave the baby with Linda?" James asked with concern.

"Stop it!" Mira snapped at him. "I'm sure your job as an obstetrician made you attached to babies, but this isn't a baby you should be attached to. I saw the way you were looking at her like you wanted to take her."

James sighed again.

"I am even more bothered thinking the baby could possibly be my half-sister or something."

"You suspect your father is responsible?"  He asked her.

"I keep thinking about it. I badly want to find out, but I also don't want to. But then, I should, right? If he is responsible, we can take the baby to him, right? He has all the money in the world to care for the baby. He should at least be a responsible father, right—"

James placed his hand on top of Mira's and squeezed it gently.

"You are panicking. You don't have to find out if you don't want to." He could understand how she felt. Her best friend's sister's baby was probably her father's daughter. That was some shitty stuff.

She shook her head. "I have to do this for Mia."

"So what are you going to do? Carry out a DNA test?" James asked. "It can be done in the King's hospital, but you know the thing about DNA tests. It can be pretty complicated, especially if you are not directly involved. Plus it's expensive and a whole lot of paperwork."

"That could be plan B."

"Then what is plan A?" James asked curiously.

Mira took out her phone and began to dial a number. As soon as the call connected after a few rings, she placed it on speaker so James could listen in.

"Baby? I am so happy you're calling me." Mr. Bill's excited voice said.

He seemed to be in a noisy environment but was trying to find a more quiet spot.

"I was having dinner with some investors but had to leave immediately I saw your call come in. How are you?"

Mira's face twisted in disgust. Investors indeed.

She had a problem with her parents for neglecting her because of work. As if that was not enough, they divorced and were now dating younger people secretly. Even her mother was dating a younger boy, and they thought they were hiding it from her. What a joke!

"Mary brought your child here." Mira said, causing James to raise an eyebrow at her.

"Wh...at are you talking about? Who is Mary and what child?" Her father asked in utter confusion.

Just great! He doesn't even know who Mary is.

She was still speaking with him when the doorbell rang, so James went to get the door, hoping it was Mia but Mia didn't need to ring the doorbell. He hoped it wasn't another baby this time.

*********

This was Mia's shelter.

She lay in a fetal position on the couch as she looked at the TV. The video of herself and Leo was playing. She watched it with a sad smile.

She was at Leo's apartment. She came here whenever she felt sad, lonely, or lost. She would spend her time cleaning the entire apartment before staying up all night watching the video. She was glad she still had a couple of days free before returning to work.

Today has been difficult. She felt a little guilty for leaving the baby with Linda. Linda didn't look like she could take care of herself, talk much about a baby.

She focused her attention on the video and smiled sadly when she saw how she and Leo were both playing by the beach.

"Good old days." She whispered and didn't know when she drifted off to sleep.

In her dream, she was back on that day. The two of them were dancing in the cottage by the beach, laughing and making out. He was touching her face and trying to kiss her. But something suddenly felt weird. She was startled awake and was surprised to realize someone was really touching her face in reality.

Or was she still dreaming?

"Le..o?" She called uncertainly as he smiled warmly at her.

The sleepiness left her and she quickly slapped his hand away and immediately sat up.

"What the hell are you doing here, Louis?" She yelled at him angrily, looking at the wall clock that said the time was 11 p.m. already.

He didn't move away, he didn't budge. His eyes remained on her and the corners of his lips slowly raised in a smile.

"Should I be mad that you keep mistaking me for my ugly brother?" He asked quietly.

Mia blinked once.

Twice.

And a third time before her eyes bulged wide.

"L...e...o?" She asked, in disbelief. And desperately prayed this was not a dream.

'Please, let this not be a dream.'

"It's... you?"

"That's right, baby girl." He grinned.
