Synopsis

In a world where reality and virtual realms collide, Shawn, an ordinary office worker, stumbles into an extraordinary adventure. Selected to beta-test "Criminal Records," a cutting-edge holographic simulation game, Shawn finds himself immersed in a world of crime, mystery, and moral ambiguity. As Shawn navigates this hyper-realistic virtual underworld, he encounters Sang Sang, a brilliant but enigmatic player whose cold logic clashes with his unwavering moral compass. Initially at odds, they form an unlikely alliance, combining Shawn's intuition with Sang Sang's analytical prowess to tackle increasingly complex scenarios. But as the line between game and reality blurs, Shawn and Sang Sang uncover a chilling truth: their virtual actions have real-world consequences. Each simulated crime seems to mirror unsolved mysteries in reality, hinting at a deeper conspiracy. Now, trapped in a dangerous game where every choice could alter the course of both virtual and real worlds, Shawn and Sang Sang must unravel the truth behind "Criminal Records." Can they maintain their humanity in a world where morality is just another algorithm? Or will they lose themselves in the very simulation they sought to master? "Holographic Simulation" is a mind-bending cyberpunk thriller that explores the boundaries of technology, morality, and human nature. In a world where every action leaves a trace, some games are far too real to be just games.

Chapter 1The Message That Changed Everything

Chapter 1 - The Message That Changed Everything

The moment his alarm blared, Shawn wanted nothing more than to bury his face in his pillow. He fumbled around, finally silencing the irritating noise. Opening his bleary eyes, he stared at the ceiling, remembering last night's promise to himself: "Tomorrow, I'll definitely wake up early to work out."

"Maybe next time," Shawn mumbled, struggling to get out of bed. His gaze swept across the room: work files cluttered his desk, and a few self-help books gathering dust in the corner. He sighed, making a mental note to tidy up over the weekend.

Standing at the sink, Shawn scrutinized his reflection: messy hair, prominent dark circles under his eyes. "I'm only 28, why do I look 38?" He chuckled wryly, splashing cold water on his face in a futile attempt to look more alive.

While waiting for last night's pizza to reheat in the microwave, Shawn scrolled through his phone. Work emails, messages from friends, news notifications – his eyes mechanically scanned them, his brain barely processing the information. Then he saw the email from his boss, Mark: "Shawn, I need that project proposal today!" He jolted awake. "Crap, I forgot to do it last night."

Taking a bite of the steaming hot pizza, Shawn hissed as it burned his tongue. He quickly washed it down with a gulp of cold coffee, grimacing at the weird flavor combination. "This isn't breakfast, it's torture," he thought. "One of these days, I've got to break these bad habits."

The subway was packed as usual. Shawn found himself pushed and jostled, nearly losing his balance. "Easy there," he muttered. The person next to him glanced over, then quickly returned their attention to their phone. Shawn suddenly envied those who drove to work, though he knew battling traffic in this city was probably even more stressful.

As he arrived at the office, Shawn could hear Mark berating some colleagues from afar. He kept his head down, speed-walking to his desk and praying he wouldn't be noticed. Settling into his chair, he took a deep breath and booted up his computer, ready to dive into work.

"Hey, Shawn! Did you catch the game last night? It was incredible!" Tom from the next cubicle leaned over.

"Uh, no, I was working late," Shawn replied awkwardly. "Can we catch up later? I've got this urgent file to handle."

"Sure thing, catch you later." Tom patted his shoulder before walking away.

Watching Tom's retreating back, Shawn felt a twinge of envy at his colleague's easy-going nature. Shaking his head, he forced himself to focus on the task at hand. Staring at the screen, Shawn began to organize his thoughts. "Okay, let's start with the outline, then..."

At lunchtime, his coworkers chattered excitedly about where to eat. Shawn considered joining them but, glancing at the mountain of work on his desk, decided to order in instead. He caught a glimpse of a few colleagues laughing with Mark and felt a pang of loneliness. "Maybe someday I'll be able to chat with the boss that easily," he thought, returning his attention to his unappetizing takeout.

After work, Shawn trudged home, his body heavy with fatigue. He remembered his mom's call a few days ago, mentioning some chest discomfort. "Should I suggest she get a check-up?" he pondered. "I really should visit this weekend."

Pushing open his apartment door, Shawn tossed his briefcase on the couch and collapsed onto the bed. Closing his eyes, he replayed the day's events: unfinished work, his boss's expectations, interactions with coworkers... and that perpetually guilt-inducing workout plan.

"Tomorrow, I'll do better," Shawn murmured, unsure if the next day would really be any different. He reached for his phone, hesitated, then opened his favorite streaming app. "Just for a bit," he told himself. "Then I'll go to sleep."

However, when he next glanced at the clock, it was already late into the night. Annoyed with himself, Shawn turned off his phone and lay in the darkness, listening to the occasional car passing outside, his mind racing.

Just as he was about to drift off, his phone lit up. It was a text from an unknown number: "Is this really the life you want?"

Shawn froze. What was this? Spam? A prank? He stared at the message for a long time, feeling an inexplicable ripple of unease in his chest.

{Check out my new novel, Misunderstood Villain: Heroines Mourn My Death} 'Born In Ruins' was a forgettable read. That was the only way Emir could describe the pages of the novel he had found himself reincarnated into. The young man barely knew anything, but the snippets he had recalled only caused him unending sorrow... As what awaited him was only tragedy and an early death. It was a depressing story, one that he had planned to flip on its head—all for his salvation. — In this post-apocalyptic world, monsters fought humans and cyborgs in a battle for survival on a scale greater than ever before. A world where innocence and death were a luxury, where the line between heroes and villains was razor-thin. Within its expanse, 'Ancient Clans,' 'Galactic Federations,' 'Factions', and 'Corporations' presided over colossal 'Ruins' that dwarfed the concept of life itself. Survivors of the 'Third World War' continuously dove into the 'Old World,' 'Hunting' for 'Relics' in any ruin that they could find on Earth, desperate to reclaim 'Lost' technology, to stand a fighting chance against the inevitable. But it appeared that 'Earthkind' had met their match. …However, Emir would never allow that fate to take its course. — Emir unraveled layers of the tale and realized the truth of the world. He acquainted himself with the rules of this game before it fully consumed him. And now... no longer content with mere survival, he sought to dominate over the very fabric of this unforgiving universe. Emir shall rise from the pawn he once was, seeking to unravel the mysteries that hounded him. The boundaries of 'Aether,' his father’s disappearance, the noose hanging above his family’s head, and of course… his starless destiny, a fate he longed to control. This pursuit would earn him the epithet: "Prince Of The Fallen." ---------------------------------------------- *Tags: Reincarnation ;), Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Magical Realism, Academy (Volume 3), Romance, Apocalypse, {Anti-Hero. Villain.} *Expect this novel to start slowly; it begins ramping up at the halfway point of volume 1. *The Magic System is introduced at the end of volume 1, read my review and Auxiliary chapter for more on that. *Warning: The main characters have emotions like proper humans. So don't expect your usual emo kid as the MC and come complaining later.
