Fertilizing Devil's Snare was the most challenging lesson in first-year Herbology.
It was easy for Kyle, but only because he had experience in this area. Don't forget he had taken care of Bitey Cabbage for a few months.
Bitey Cabbage, with its teeth, was much more dangerous than Devil's Snare, which only knew how to tie people up. If he made a mistake, Kyle might have to go to the hospital wing to drink Skele-Gro... or another potion.
After a period of hell mode, returning to a simple dungeon was naturally easy.
But the others didn't have this kind of experience. They were all suffering under the Devil's Snare's tendrils, yelping.
Some of them panicked after being entangled by the tendrils. They completely forgot Professor Sprout's instructions and instinctively struggled.
If Professor Sprout hadn't been there, they would have been wrapped up like dumplings.
Kyle was also busy. When Professor Sprout was too busy to help everyone, he volunteered to help the students escape the Devil's Snare.
Professor Sprout gave Hufflepuff ten points for his efforts.
"Thank you, Kyle."
Ryan shook his arm, which was sore from being strangled, "I thought it was very easy when I saw you do it. I didn't expect it to be so difficult… I can't even get close to it."
"Don't be discouraged…"
Kyle patted him on the shoulder, "Just pay attention. Don't touch the tendrils."
"I'll try."
Ryan sighed, "It's too bad that Professor Sprout doesn't allow us to use the Lumos Charm. It would be much easier."
"You're overthinking it." Kyle gently shook his head.
If they used the Lumos Charm, this young Devil's Snare would probably just give up. Then, the lesson wouldn't make any sense.
If it was just digging a hole and adding fertilizer, a three-year-old could do it. Why waste a class learning it?
"I was just saying."
Ryan changed directions and tried to extend his hand again.
Kyle shifted his gaze elsewhere.
The others were doing about the same as Ryan. But there were exceptions.
Kanna had completed the task. She was the second to successfully fertilize the Devil's Snare. Although her movements weren't as proficient as Kyle's, and she paused many times, it was still very good overall. She passed on the first try.
Cormac McLaggen from Gryffindor also managed to do it. But it took him longer. He only finished halfway through the class.
After him, the Devil's Snare seemed to be tired. The tendrils moved much slower, giving the students more opportunities.
By the end of class, more than half had managed to fertilize the Devil's Snare. But they were sweating profusely, wishing they could go back to the castle and take a shower.
Professor Sprout had them line up in two rows. After everyone was in position, she slowly opened the greenhouse door.
Sunlight instantly filled the entire greenhouse. The Devil's Snare in the middle seemed to be greatly stimulated, and it stopped moving.
Kyle, who had deliberately stood at the back of the line, saw his opportunity. Taking advantage of Professor Sprout's distraction, he quickly took out a small knife he had prepared and swiftly cut off a small piece of the root, stuffing it into his pocket.
The sunlight had a huge effect on Devil's Snare. It didn't move, even though someone had just taken a chunk out of it.
Kyle then left the greenhouse with the crowd as if nothing had happened. He even greeted Professor Sprout when he walked past her.
"Goodbye, Professor."
"Goodbye, Kyle." Professor Sprout smiled and waved, "I remember you liked plants. Would you be interested in having a potted Puffapod?
It will be ready to divide next lesson."
"I'd love to, Professor."
He didn't expect to get a bonus… Kyle was even happier.
After saying goodbye to Professor Sprout, he quickly walked towards the castle.
Puffapods could wait. Kyle planned to send the thing in his pocket to the Room of Requirement on the eighth floor first.
Devil's Snare, this type of vine, was very resilient. As long as he planted the root cutting into the soil in time, it would survive and grow into a complete Devil's Snare.
As he was walking, a commotion suddenly came from nearby.
Kyle looked up and saw that many people were running towards Hagrid's cabin. Among them were the students who had just had Herbology class with him.
"What's going on? Did someone find out that Hagrid has a three-headed dog?"
Kyle frowned and went over to take a look.
It was as he had expected. Someone had indeed found out that Hagrid owned a three-headed dog, and they had even come looking for him.
Three Ministry of Magic members dressed as Hit Wizards were standing at the door of the cabin, pointing their wands at Hagrid.
"We received a tip that you bought a magical creature of unknown origin in September."
One of the Hit Wizards said, "Hand it over, then come with us back to the Ministry."
"I didn't!"
Hagrid's face was flushed red. "I only bought some slug repellent that time!"
The Hit Wizard pressed on, "But someone saw you trading magical creatures."
"He's lying!"
Hagrid said anxiously, "And you've already checked my room, haven't you? Only Fang and I live here!"
"Whether you have it or not, isn't for you to decide. We can't just take your word for it." The man looked at Hagrid, narrowing his eyes. "If you were truly wrongly accused, the Ministry will naturally clear your name… What do you have to worry about?
Or are you guilty and don't dare to go back to the Ministry with us?"
His aggressive demeanor made the students around them furious.
Although they weren't close to Hagrid, they remembered that it was this big guy who brought them to the castle from the station when they first started school.
Students… especially freshmen. They didn't care about the Ministry of Magic. They only knew that Hagrid was on their side. So, they were on his side.
Boos and shouts erupted around them. They shouted for them to leave Hogwarts.
Some clever students knew they couldn't do anything to the Ministry members. They quickly ran towards the castle to get reinforcements.
The Hit Wizards noticed the situation too. They exchanged a look, then simultaneously raised their wands, as if they wanted to forcibly take Hagrid away.
Just as Kyle was about to stop them, someone stepped forward before he could.
"Don't make yourself sound so righteous."
Professor Oren had appeared behind the three Hit Wizards, seemingly out of nowhere. He said with a sneer, "Aren't you here based on what someone else said?"
